The differential synaptic organization of the spinal and lemniscal projections to the ventrobasal complex of the rat thalamus. Evidence for convergence of the two systems upon single thalamic neurons.

The synaptic organization of terminals originating either from the spinal cord (spinothalamic) or from the dorsal column nuclei (lemniscal) was investigated in the ventrobasal complex of the rat thalamus. Wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase was used as an anterogradely transported axonal tracer, using benzidine dihydrochloride as a chromogen for the identification by electron microscopy of spinal and lemniscal projections to the ventrobasal thalamus. A double anterograde tract tracing strategy, based labeling by wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase of

Visual tracking in monkeys: evidence for short-latency suppression of the vestibuloocular reflex.

1. Monkeys normally use a combination of smooth head and eye movements to keep the eyes pointed at a slowly moving object. The visual inputs from target motion evoke smooth pursuit eye movements, whereas the vestibular inputs from head motion evoke a vestibuloocular reflex (VOR). Our study asks how the eye movements of pursuit and the VOR interact. Is there a linear addition of independent commands for pursuit and the VOR? Or does the interaction of visual and vestibular stimuli cause momentary, "parametric" modulation of transmission through VOR pathways? 2. We probed for the state of the VOR

ADT-OH promotes mitophagy and suppresses the cytosolic mtDNA-cGAS-STING inflammatory cascade in microglia.

Mitochondrial dysfunction, driven by genetic susceptibility or environmental insults, contributes to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). Mitophagy is a selective pathway that eliminates dysfunctional mitochondria, and mitophagy inducers hold therapeutic promise for neurodegeneration. However, the arsenal of specific, clinically viable inducers remains limited. ADT-OH, a slow-release H2S compound, was recently reported to induce mitochondrial uncoupling through sulfide-quinone oxidoreductase (SQR)-mediated oxidation of H2S. In this study, we repo

Lipid deposition as a common feature of pneumonias of different etiologies.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is highly prevalent, yet lipid metabolism in the human pneumonic lung remains poorly characterized despite its essential role in pulmonary homeostasis and disease. Here, we report a systematic histological and molecular analysis of lipid deposition in pneumonias of different etiologies. METHODS: We analyzed fatal COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 pneumonias. Patients underwent ante mortem chest CT and were subsequently examined at autopsy; non-pneumonic autopsy lungs served as controls. Lipid accumulation was visualized on OsO4-postfixed semi-thin sections and Sudan III/Oil Red

The stress-myopia pathway: A pivotal hub in myopia pathogenesis.

Myopia presents a significant global public health challenge, with high myopia markedly increasing the risk of irreversible visual impairment. While myopia involves complex etiological and pathophysiological mechanisms, no effective treatments currently exist for the core pathological changes of axial elongation. This paper proposes the "stress-myopia pathway" working hypothesis for the first time, which posits that various risk factors (such as genetic, environmental, and near-work with academic pressure, screen exposure, etc.) function as stressors that drive myopia progression through a sha

Self-Amplifying AIE Probe for HClO-Activatable Imaging and Antioxidative/Anti-Inflammatory Therapy of Thoracic Aortic Dissection.

Thoracic aortic dissection (TAD) is a highly lethal cardiovascular disease, yet its accurate diagnosis and effective treatment remain challenging due to poor imaging contrast and insufficient specificity. Leveraging the overexpressed reactive oxygen species (ROS) in TAD, we reported a hypochlorous acid (HClO)-activatable molecular probe DT-PZ. It enables two-stage self-amplifying fluorescence imaging (chemical activation and then physical aggregation) and light-independent therapy on a single chemical entity. The probe initially exhibits quenched fluorescence via photoinduced electron transfer

Identification of Candidate mRNA and miRNA Molecules Associated with Tuberculosis Through Preliminary Analysis and Validation Using Clinical Samples.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health burden. This study aimed to identify differentially expressed messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with TB and to validate their potential roles in the disease. We performed RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) on peripheral blood samples from 10 patients with active pulmonary TB and 10 healthy controls, using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) for mRNA sequencing and plasma for miRNA sequencing. Given the exploratory nature of the plasma miRNA data and the limitations of the U6 normalization method, the results

Title Oxidative Stress in Age-Related Macular Degeneration: From Molecular Mechanisms to Emerging Therapeutic Targets.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible visual impairment in the elderly, and oxidative stress, primarily mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS), is widely recognized as a central driver of its onset and progression. The retina is highly susceptible to oxidative damage due to its elevated oxygen consumption, abundant polyunsaturated fatty acids, and continuous exposure to light. Recent studies have elucidated molecular mechanisms in which mitochondrial dysfunction, disruption of redox homeostasis, inflammation, and complement activation interact to promote

FOXO3 Protects Lens Epithelial Cells From UVB-Induced Oxidative Stress via the AMPK/FOXO3 Signaling Pathway.

Age-related cataract (ARC) represents a major global cause of visual impairment, with ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation recognized as a primary contributor to oxidative damage in the lens. FOXO3, a key regulator of aging, apoptosis, and oxidative stress-induced cell death, was investigated for its role and regulatory mechanisms in UVB-induced oxidative stress using human lens epithelial cells (HLECs). A progressive decrease in FOXO3 protein expression was observed in the lens capsules across various stages of cataract progression, as well as in UVB-exposed animal models and UVB-treated HLECs. Computational Identification of RNF114 nsSNPs with Potential Roles in Psoriasis and Immune Dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: RNF114 gene encodes an E3 ubiquitin ligase involved in immune signaling and regulation of inflammation. Genetic variants, particularly nonsynonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs), may interfere with protein function and cause immune diseases such as psoriasis. Although significant, the structural and functional impact of RNF114 nsSNPs is not well understood. METHODS: We used comprehensive bioinformatics analyses to predict the functional impact of RNF114 nsSNPs. Deleterious variants were predicted by SIFT, PolyPhen-2, PROVEAN, META-SNP, ESNP&GO, PANTHER, and Alpha-Misse

Baicalin ameliorates inflammation response in diabetic dry eye models through the inhibition of the PERK/TXNIP/NLRP3 pathway.

Diabetes mellitus is an important risk factor for dry eye. Dry eye may cause structural and functional disorders in corneal epithelial cells, seriously affecting the visual quality of diabetic patients. Baicalin (BA), a constituent of Scutellariae baicalensis, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, whether BA exerts a therapeutic effect on patients with diabetic dry eye and the underlying mechanism are unclear. Here, we explored the underlying mechanism of baicalin in diabetic dry eye. In cells, we used high glucose-stimulated human corneal epithelial (HCE-T) cells for mode

Past, Present, and Future of Liver-Brain Axis in Alzheimer's Disease: A Bibliometric Review.

BACKGROUND: No effective drugs currently exist to cure Alzheimer's disease (AD) due to its complexity and the lack of understanding of the involved molecular signaling and pathways. The relationship between liver health and AD is now widely recognized. Still, molecular links and shared pathways between the liver and brain remain unclear, making the liver-brain axis in AD therapies a new area for exploration. However, bibliometric studies on this topic are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to review the liver-brain axis in AD and identify future research hotspots and trends through bibliomet

Fast inhibition slows and desynchronizes mouse auditory efferent neuron activity.

The encoding of acoustic stimuli requires precise neuron timing. Auditory neurons in the cochlear nucleus (CN) and brainstem are well-suited for accurate analysis of fast acoustic signals, given their physiological specializations of fast membrane time constants, fast axonal conduction, and reliable synaptic transmission. The medial olivocochlear (MOC) neurons that provide efferent inhibition of the cochlea reside in the ventral brainstem and participate in these fast neural circuits.
