Impact of platelets on major thrombosis in patients with a normal white blood cell count in essential thrombocythemia.

OBJECTIVES: Cell counts have a significant impact on the complex mechanism of thrombosis in patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET). We recently demonstrated a considerable impact of white blood cell (WBC) counts on thrombotic risk in patients with optimized platelet counts by analysing a large anagrelide registry. In contrast, the current analysis of the registry aimed to estimate the influence of platelet counts on thrombotic risk in patients with optimized WBC counts. METHODS: Cox regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier plot were applied on all patients in the registry with optimized WBC

Bilateral Distance Partition of Periventricular and Deep White Matter Hyperintensities: Performance of the Method in the Aging Brain.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Periventricular and deep white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) in the elderly have been reported with distinctive roles in the progression of cognitive decline and dementia. However, the definition of these two subregions of WMHs is arbitrary and varies across studies. Here, we evaluate three partition methods for WMH subregions, including two widely used conventional methods (CV & D10) and one novel method based on bilateral distance (BD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The three partition methods were assessed on the MRI scans of 60 subjects, with 20 normal control, 20 mild

A preliminary investigation of corpus callosum subregion white matter vulnerability and relation to chronic outcome in boxers.

Microstructural neuropathology occurs in the corpus callosum (CC) after repetitive sports concussion in boxers and can be dose-dependent. However, the specificity and relation of CC changes to boxing exposure extent and post-career psychiatric and neuropsychological outcomes are largely unknown. Using deterministic diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) techniques, boxers and demographically-matched, noncontact sport athletes were compared to address literature gaps. Ten boxers and 9 comparison athletes between 26 and 59 years old (M = 44.63, SD = 9.24) completed neuropsychological testing and MRI. Qu

Feasibility of manual white blood cell counts as a predictor of neonatal sepsis in a low-resource setting.

BACKGROUND: Manual white blood cell (WBC) differential counts as a predictor for neonatal sepsis development in a low-resource setting have not been thoroughly evaluated. We hypothesized that manual differentiation (specifically immature:total [I:T] neutrophil ratios) would be feasible and useful as an adjunct to predict early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS). Secondarily, we hypothesized that vaccination with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and oral polio vaccine (OPV) could alter WBC differential counts and thus might reduce its predictive performance. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort

Ruby chocolate: A study of its phytochemical composition and quantitative comparison with dark, milk and white chocolate.

Ruby chocolate was introduced in 2017 as the fourth type of chocolate, in addition to white, milk and dark chocolate. However, until now not much is reported about its phytochemical composition. Therefore, we analyzed ruby chocolate by UPLC-HRMS, together with the three other types of chocolate. Feature-based molecular networking was carried out to aid in the identification, while a set of 51 reference compounds were analyzed simultaneously for targeted quantification. In this way, a total of 54 compounds could be (tentatively) identified in the chocolates, of which 43 were found in the ruby c

Evaluation of growth and motility in non-photosynthetic Azospirillum brasilense exposed to red, blue, and white light.

Azospirillum brasilense is a non-photosynthetic rhizobacterium that promotes the growth of plants. In this work, we evaluated the effects of different light qualities on the growth, viability, and motility in combination to other culture conditions such as temperature or composition of the culture medium. Exponential cultures of A. brasilense Az39 were inoculated by drop-plate method on nutritionally rich (LB) or chemically defined (MMAB) media in the presence or absence of Congo Red indicator (CR) and exposed continuously to white light (WL), blue light (BL), and red light (RL), or maintained

A moderate level of hypovirulence conferred by a hypovirus in the avocado white root rot fungus, Rosellinia necatrix.

Two isolates of Rosellinia necatrix (Rn118-8 and Rn480) have previously obtained from diseased avocado trees in commercial orchards of the coastal area in southern Spain. Rn118-8 and Rn480 have weak virulence on avocado plants, and are infected by R. necatrix hypovirus 2 (RnHV2). In this work, the possible biological effects of the hypovirus on R. necatrix were tested. First, RnHV2 was transmitted from each of Rn118-8 and Rn480 to a highly virulent, RnHV2-free isolate of R. necatrix (Rn400) through hyphal anastomosis, using zinc compounds which attenuate the mycelial incompatibility reactions

The Rosmarinus Bioactive Compound Carnosic Acid Is a Novel PPAR Antagonist That Inhibits the Browning of White Adipocytes.

Thermogenic brown and brite adipocytes convert chemical energy from nutrients into heat. Therapeutics that regulate brown adipocyte recruitment and activity represent interesting strategies to control fat mass such as in obesity or cachexia. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) family plays key roles in the maintenance of adipose tissue and in the regulation of thermogenic activity. Activation of these receptors induce browning of white adipocyte. The purpose of this work was to characterize the role of carnosic acid (CA), a compound used in traditional medicine, in the contro

Altered neurochemistry in the anterior white matter of bipolar children and adolescents: a multivoxel 1H MRS study.

Abnormalities within frontal lobe gray and white matter of bipolar disorder (BD) patients have been consistently reported in adult and pediatric studies, yet little is known about the neurochemistry of the anterior white matter (AWM) in pediatric BD and how medication status may affect it. The present cross-sectional 3T 1H MRS study is the first to use a multivoxel approach to study the AWM of BD youth. Absolute metabolite levels from four bilateral AWM voxels were collected from 49 subjects between the ages of 8 and 18 (25 healthy controls (HC); 24 BD) and quantified. Our study found BD subje

Neonatal hydrocephalus leads to white matter neuroinflammation and injury in the corpus callosum of Ccdc39 hydrocephalic mice.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine if hydrocephalus caused a proinflammatory state within white matter as is seen in many other forms of neonatal brain injury. Common causes of hydrocephalus (such as trauma, infection, and hemorrhage) are inflammatory insults themselves and therefore confound understanding of how hydrocephalus itself affects neuroinflammation. Recently, a novel animal model of hydrocephalus due to a genetic mutation in the Ccdc39 gene has been developed in mice. In this model, ciliary dysfunction leads to early-onset ventriculomegaly, astrogliosis, and reduced myelinat

A preliminary investigation of impulsivity, aggression and white matter in patients with bipolar disorder and a suicide attempt history.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity and aggression may be associated with suicide attempts in bipolar disorder (BD), but findings have been inconsistent. Abnormalities in anterior white matter tracts that project to the frontal lobes mediate top-down regulation of emotion and may contribute to this clinical phenomenology. METHODS: We assessed white matter (i.e., fractional anisotropy) in anterior and posterior brain regions using diffusion tensor imaging in 18 patients with BD and no prior suicide attempt (BD-S), 12 patients with BD and a prior suicide attempt (BD+S), and 12 healthy volunteers. Patients

Retinal vascular density evaluation of migraine patients with and without aura and association with white matter hyperintensities.

Underlying pathophysiological mechanism of migraine is not all clear; however, recent reports suggested that neurovascular system is involved. We aimed to evaluate the retinal vessel densities of migraine patients with and without aura and the associations with white matter hyperintensities (WMH), using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). We recruited 28 migraine with aura (MWA) patients, 26 migraine without aura (MWO) and age and sex-matched 34 healthy controls in our study. All participants were evaluated with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCTA for optic nerve parameter

Lower Mortality Rates from Cryptococcosis in Women and Whites with Human Immunodeficiency Virus in the United States.

Cryptococcosis is an opportunistic mycotic infection often found in pigeon droppings and other bird excrement. This serious disease is often fatal and, not unexpectedly, far more common in patients with immune deficiency, including those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It has been hypothesized that women with cryptococcosis and HIV have a more favorable mortality experience than men. In addition, the availability of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (ART) for HIV in the United States (US) has been associated with greater racial disparities in mortality. The US Centers for Disease

Genetic Ancestry Markers and Difference in A1c Between African American and White in the Diabetes Prevention Program.

PURPOSE: HbA1c levels are higher in blacks than non-Hispanic whites (NHWs). We investigated whether genetics could explain this difference in Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) participants. METHODS: We tested (i) genetic variants causing hemoglobinopathies, (ii) a genetic risk score (GRS) based on 60 variants associated with HbA1c from genome-wide association meta-analysis, and (iii) principal component (PC) factors that capture continental ancestry derived from genetic markers distributed across the genome. RESULTS: Of 2658 eligible DPP participants, 537 (20%) self-identified as black and 1

Race and Objective Social Isolation: Older African Americans, Black Caribbeans, and Non-Hispanic Whites.

OBJECTIVES: Social isolation is a major risk factor for poor physical and mental health among older adults. This study investigates the correlates of objective social isolation among older African Americans, Black Caribbean immigrants, and non-Hispanic Whites. METHODS: The analysis is based on the older subsample (n = 1,439) of the National Survey of American Life. There are eight indicators of objective social isolation: no contact with neighbors, neighborhood groups, friends, family members, religious congregation members, not being married and no romantic involvement, living alone, and not

Comparison of Long-Term Clinical Outcomes After Drug-Eluting Stenting in Blacks-vs-Whites.

Patients of different racial backgrounds may have socioeconomic, cultural, or genetic differences that impact outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). There are limited data beyond 2 to 3 years for Blacks to inform discussions and perhaps improve outcomes. We studied consecutive limus-stent treated patients, having their first PCI at our institution January 2003 to March 2010 in 2 cohorts; Cohort 1: standard 3-year follow-up (n = 3,782, 12.4% Blacks) and Cohort 2: from nearby zip codes with intended detailed follow-up through 8 to 13 years (n = 616, 31.8% Blacks). Total and Regional White Matter Lesions Are Correlated With Motor and Cognitive Impairments in Carriers of the FMR1 Premutation.

This study explores the relationships between hemispheric and cerebellar white matter lesions and motor and cognitive impairments in male carriers of Fragile-X Mental Retardation 1 (FMR1) premutation alleles, and in a subgroup of these carriers affected with Fragile X-Associated Tremor/Ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). Regional and total white matter hyperintensities (wmhs) on MRI, assessed using semiquantitative scores, were correlated with three motor rating scales (ICARS, UPDRS, Tremor), and neuropsychological measures of non-verbal reasoning, working memory and processing speed, in a sample of 30 m

Physiological response in the leaf and stolon of white clover under acid precipitation and freeze-thaw stress.

Freeze-thaw (FT) in northern China is a common event in spring and autumn, and the release of sulfur dioxide from coal-burning in winter is apt to trigger acid precipitation. Both these stresses can aggravate the wintering ability of white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Acid precipitation and FT simulation experiments were carried out in the field and an indoor alternation refrigerator, respectively. The contents of soluble protein, soluble sugar, malondialdehyde (MDA), proline and antioxidant activity were tested under acid precipitation and FT stress. The results showed that under acid precip

Genetic risk for schizophrenia and developmental delay is associated with shape and microstructure of midline white-matter structures.

Genomic copy number variants (CNVs) are amongst the most highly penetrant genetic risk factors for neuropsychiatric disorders. The scarcity of carriers of individual CNVs and their phenotypical heterogeneity limits investigations of the associated neural mechanisms and endophenotypes. We applied a novel design based on CNV penetrance for schizophrenia (Sz) and developmental delay (DD) that allows us to identify structural sequelae that are most relevant to neuropsychiatric disorders. Our focus on brain structural abnormalities was based on the hypothesis that convergent mechanisms contributing
