Insomnia, excessive sleepiness, excessive fatigue, anxiety, depression and shift work disorder in nurses having less than 11 hours in-between shifts.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To assess if less than 11 hours off work between work shifts (quick returns) was related to insomnia, sleepiness, fatigue, anxiety, depression and shift work disorder among nurses. METHODS: A questionnaire including established instruments measuring insomnia (Bergen Insomnia Scale), sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale), fatigue (Fatigue Questionnaire), anxiety/depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) and shift work disorder was administered. Among the 1990 Norwegian nurses who participated in the study; 264 nurses had no quick returns, 724 had 1-30 quick returns an

Effects of frontal lobe damage on interference effects in working memory.

Working memory is hypothesized to comprise a collection of distinct components or processes, each of which may have a unique neural substrate. Recent neuroimaging studies have isolated a region of the left inferior frontal gyrus that appears to be related specifically to one such component: resolving interference from previous items in working memory. In the present study, we examined working memory in patients with unilateral frontal lobe lesions by using a modified version of an item recognition task in which interference from previous trials was manipulated. In particular, we focused on pat

Threshold relationship between lesion extent of the cholinergic basal forebrain in the rat and working memory impairment in the radial maze.

The cholinergic basal forebrain (CBF) degenerates in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), and the degree of this degeneration correlates with the degree of dementia. In the present study we have modeled this degeneration in the rat by injecting various doses of the highly selective immunotoxin 192 IgG-saporin (192-sap) into the ventricular system. The ability of 192-sap-treated rats to perform in a previously learned radial maze working memory task was then tested. We report here that 192-sap created lesions of the CBF and, to a lesser extent, cerebellar Purkinje cells in a dose-dependent fashion. Furthe

Development of an efficient deep learning model for arrhythmia detection from consumer smartwatches.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac arrhythmias often progress without clear symptoms and may remain undetected until severe complications occur. Continuous monitoring through consumer smartwatches offers a scalable and non-invasive opportunity for real-time rhythm screening in free-living conditions. However, wrist-based photoplethysmography (PPG) signals are highly susceptible to motion artifacts and inter-subject variability, limiting traditional signal-processing techniques. In this work, we compare classical machine learning and deep learning approaches for multi-class arrhythmia classification from re

Radiation-Associated Brain Dysfunction in Military and Occupational Settings: Neuroimmune Mechanisms and Functional Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-associated brain dysfunction is relevant to military and occupational health because low-dose, chronic, documented, suspected, or perceived radiation exposure can raise questions about cognition, fatigue, vigilance, effortful task engagement, and work-relevant function. This narrative review focuses on biomedical and occupational-health studies relevant to brain-related functional outcomes after documented, suspected, or perceived radiation exposure. Evidence from radiotherapy, occupational radiation cohorts, radiological events, and whole-body or extracranial irradiati

Improved Prognosis of Treatment Failure in Cervical Cancer with Nontumor PET/CT Radiomics.

Radiomics has been applied to predict recurrence in several disease sites, but current approaches are typically restricted to analyzing tumor features, neglecting nontumor information in the rest of the body. The purpose of this work was to develop and validate a model incorporating nontumor radiomics, including whole-body features, to predict treatment outcomes in patients with previously untreated locoregionally advanced cervical cancer. Methods: We analyzed 127 cervical cancer patients treated definitively with chemoradiotherapy and intracavitary brachytherapy. All patients underwent pretre

Breath emulator for simulation and modelling of expired tidal breath carbon dioxide characteristics.

BACKGROUND: In this work we describe a breath emulator system, used to simulate temporal characteristics of exhaled carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration waveform versus time simulating how much CO2 is present at each phase of the human lung respiratory process. The system provides a method for testing capnometers incorporating fast response non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) CO2 gas sensing devices - in a clinical setting, capnography devices assess ventilation which is the CO2 movement in and out of the lungs. A mathematical model describing the waveform of the expired CO2 characteristic and influe

When you can, scale up: Large-scale study shows no effect of tDCS in an ambiguous risk-taking task.

BACKGROUND: A wide range of neuroimaging and neuromodulation studies have shown that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) plays a pivotal role in decision-making. Of particular interest is the question of its role in decision-making when conditions are uncertain and whether manipulating this neural substrate through neuromodulation changes subsequent risk-taking behaviour. Previous work using the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) suggests that bilateral tDCS stimulation of the DLPFC reduces risk-taking behaviour but unilateral stimulation has no effect. However, participant numbers have

Strategies in primary healthcare to implement early identification of risky alcohol consumption: why do they work or not? A qualitative evaluation of the ODHIN study.

BACKGROUND: Screening and brief interventions (SBI) in primary healthcare are cost-effective in risky drinkers, yet they are not offered to all eligible patients. This qualitative study aimed to provide more insight into the factors and mechanisms of why, how, for whom and under what circumstances implementation strategies work or do not work in increasing SBI. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted between February and July 2014 with 40 GPs and 28 nurses in Catalonia, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden. Participants were purposefully selected from the European Optimising Deliver

Anthrax attack at the United States Capitol. Front line thoughts.

One great fear was realized on October 15, 2001 when United States citizens witnessed firsthand the unprecedented release of anthrax into a community. Although the office of the Attending Physician to Congress had been preparing for such an unthinkable act, lessons were learned as the events unfolded. The following is a summary of the findings: Preparation, planning, and frequent review of bioterrorism response procedures are essential. Effective communication remains the key to successful team performance. Briefings conducted daily and on an as needed basis shape the progress and performance

Designing Consumer Health Information Technology to Support Biform and Articulation Work: A Qualitative Study of Diet and Nutrition Management as Patient Work.

BACKGROUND: Diet and nutrition management is an integral component of Crohn disease (CD) management. This type of management is highly variable and individualized and, thus, requires personalized approaches. Consumer health information technology (CHIT) designed to support CD management has typically supported this task as everyday life work and, not necessarily, as illness work. Moreover, CHIT has rarely supported the ways in which diet and nutrition management requires coordination between multiple forms of patient work. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate diet and nutri

Reduced parietofrontal effective connectivity during a working-memory task in people with high delusional ideation.

BACKGROUND: Working-memory impairment is a core cognitive dysfunction in people with schizophrenia and people at mental high risk. Recent imaging studies on working memory have suggested that abnormalities in prefrontal activation and in connectivity between the frontal and parietal regions could be neural underpinnings of the different stages of psychosis. However, it remains to be explored whether comparable alterations are present in people with subclinical levels of psychosis, as experienced by a small proportion of the general population who neither seek help nor show constraints in daily

Workers' perspectives on return to work after total knee arthroplasty.

OBJECTIVES: Total knee arthroplasty is an effective intervention for people with osteoarthritis. However, 15 to 30% of patients do not return to work, and studies frequently fail to provide an explanation of what may lead to work disability from workers' perspectives of the biopsychosocial factors. This study aimed to document workers' representations or understanding of work disability after total knee arthroplasty. METHOD: We adopted a qualitative approach with a narrative inquiry method. A convenience sample of partially and fully disabled workers was interviewed 6 to 12months after surger

[The working environment control of anhydride hardeners from an epoxy resin system].

Epoxy resins are widely used in adhesives, coatings, materials for molds and composites, and encapsulation. Acid anhydrides such as methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride are being used as curing agents for epoxy resins. The anhydride hardeners are well-known industrial inhalant allergens, inducing predominantly type I allergies. In the electronic components industry, these substances have been consumed in large quantities. Therefore, safe use in the industry demands control of the levels of exposure causing allergic diseases in the workshop. We conducted a prospective survey of two electronics pl

A Patient Simulation Framework for Risk Assessment of Conversational Health Care AI: Development and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Conversational AI systems are increasingly being deployed in health care for clinical decision support, but their performance varies substantially across patient communication styles, health literacy levels, and behavioral patterns. Static benchmarks cannot capture multiturn dynamics through which this variation compounds, and no current evaluation framework implements structured AI risk management guidance for conversational health care AI. The result is a structural risk: AI systems may perform well in aggregate while failing disproportionately for the populations they are intend

Geometry-Constrained Multi-Frame Character Association for License Plate Recognition on Moving Cameras.

Multi-frame fusion is standard for converting frame-by-frame license plate character detections into stable, reliable readings. Character Time-Series Matching (CTM), a leading approach, associates characters across frames using the Hungarian algorithm with a fixed Euclidean distance threshold and a translation-only motion model, reporting 96.7% accuracy on the UFPR-ALPR dataset. In this work, we demonstrate that this high performance is protocol-dependent: when ground-truth static plate crops and pre-segmented tracks are used, CTM performs strongly. However, in real-world scenarios involving m

An improved dataset for predicting mammal infecting viruses from genetic sequence information.

There have been several attempts to develop machine learning (ML) models to identify human infecting viruses from their genomic sequences, with varying degrees of success. Direct comparison between models is problematic, because these models are typically trained and evaluated on different datasets with alternative data splitting schemes, features, and model performance metrics. In this paper we present a standardized dataset of mammal infecting and non-infecting viral pathogens, refined from the previous work of Mollentze et al. to include the latest literature evidence, roughly doubling the
