Value of Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography in Identifying Osteoarticular Septic Grafts in Suspected Infective Endocarditis: Results from a Large Monocentric Cohort.

Background: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-CT (FDG-PET/CT) is useful for identifying infective endocarditis (IE) but also the detection of other concomitant septic foci. Previously, we found that FDG-PET/CT identified an osteoarthritic septic graft (OASG) in 19.1% of IE patients, frequently asymptomatic. These preliminary results encouraged us to extend our analyses to a larger population, including all patients initially explored for suspected IE, to assess the prevalence, characteristics, and OASG locations brought out by FDG-PET/CT and to identify predictive factors. An optimization method for measuring the stomata in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) under multiple abiotic stresses.

As a gateway for gas exchange, pores regulate the transport of air and water in carbon assimilation, respiration, and transpiration to quickly adapt to environmental changes. Therefore, the study of stomatal movement characteristics of plants is helpful to strengthen the understanding of the mechanism of plant response to multi-environmental stress, and can improve the function of plant resistance to stresses. The stomatal movement of Arabidopsis leaves was observed by staining the stomata with rhodamine 6G, but this method has not been reported in other plant leaf stomata studies. Taking cass

Skin transcriptome analysis in Brangus cattle under heat stress.

Heat stress is a major factor that negatively affects animal welfare and production systems. Livestock should adapt to tropical and subtropical areas and to meet this, composite breeds have been developed. This work aimed to evaluate gene expression profiles in the skin of Brangus cattle under heat stress using a case-control design, and to correlate this with skin histological characteristics. Two groups of bulls were set using rectal temperature as a criterion to define stress conditions: stressed (N = 5) and non-stressed (N = 5) groups. Skin transcriptomics was performed and correlations be

Holistic understanding of trimethoprim resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae using an integrative approach of genome-wide association study, resistance reconstruction, and machine learning.

UNLABELLED: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a public health threat worldwide. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has opened unprecedented opportunities to accelerate AMR mechanism discovery and diagnostics. Here, we present an integrative approach to investigate trimethoprim (TMP) resistance in the key pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae. We explored a collection of 662 S. pneumoniae genomes by conducting a genome-wide association study (GWAS), followed by functional validation using resistance reconstruction experiments, combined with machine learning (ML) approaches to predict TMP minimum inhi

Perceptions and biomechanical effects of varying prosthetic ankle stiffness during uphill walking: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic foot stiffness, which is typically invariable for commercially available prosthetic feet, needs to be considered when prescribing a prosthetic foot. While a biological foot adapts its function according to the movement task, an individual with lower limb amputation may be limited during more functionally demanding gait tasks by their conventional energy storing and return prosthetic foot. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do changes in prosthetic foot stiffness during incline walking affect biomechanical measures as well as perception of participants. METHODS: Kinetic and kinemat

In silico identification of human microRNAs pointing centrin genes in Leishmania donovani: Considering the RNAi-mediated gene control.

Leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease caused by different species of the protozoa parasite Leishmania, is a neglected tropical human disease that is endemic in about a hundred countries worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the annual incidence of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is estimated to be 0.7-1.2 million cases globally, whereas the annual incidence of visceral leishmaniasis is estimated to be 0.2-0.4 million cases. In many eukaryotic organisms, including human beings and protozoan parasites, centrin genes encode proteins that play essential roles within the centrosome

Taxonomic and life cycle reappraisals of the marine basidiomycete Nia vibrissa complex, with descriptions of three new Nia species.

The marine basidiomycete Nia vibrissa has been regarded as a species complex, possibly including several species, because morphological variations in fruitbody, spore, and spore appendage have been observed in materials from worldwide collections. Using more than 50 monosporic isolates of N. vibrissa-like fungi mainly obtained from Japanese beach coasts, we investigated their molecular phylogeny, morphological characteristics, mating compatibility, nuclear behavior during spore formation, and life cycles. Molecular phylogenetic analyses separated the examined strains into seven clades. Each cl

Role of the mechanisms for antibody repertoire diversification in monoclonal light chain deposition disorders: when a friend becomes foe.

The adaptive immune system of jawed vertebrates generates a highly diverse repertoire of antibodies to meet the antigenic challenges of a constantly evolving biological ecosystem. Most of the diversity is generated by two mechanisms: V(D)J gene recombination and somatic hypermutation (SHM). SHM introduces changes in the variable domain of antibodies, mostly in the regions that form the paratope, yielding antibodies with higher antigen binding affinity. However, antigen recognition is only possible if the antibody folds into a stable functional conformation. Therefore, a key force determining t

Recombinant GM-CSF for diseases of GM-CSF insufficiency: Correcting dysfunctional mononuclear phagocyte disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Endogenous granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), identified by its ability to support differentiation of hematopoietic cells into several types of myeloid cells, is now known to support maturation and maintain the metabolic capacity of mononuclear phagocytes including monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. These cells sense and attack potential pathogens, present antigens to adaptive immune cells, and recruit other immune cells. Recombinant human (rhu) GM-CSF (e.g., sargramostim [glycosylated, yeast-derived rhu GM-CSF]) has immune modulating properties

An educational intervention to promote a culture of gender equity among persons with traumatic brain injury and caregivers: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes are dependent on patients' biological sex (e.g., hormone levels) and sociocultural gender (e.g., norms, responsibilities). Informal caregivers additionally experience disruptions to identity and roles post-TBI. However, information on this topic remains largely unavailable to patients and caregivers. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a one-time educational intervention on sex and gender influences in TBI for patients and informal caregivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a pilot pre-test/post-test randomized co

Factors associated with high exclusive breastfeeding rates among preterm infants under 34 weeks of gestation in Da Nang, Vietnam: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants have higher mortality than full-term infants. While breastfeeding dramatically reduces preterm death, it is limited by biological and practice barriers, particularly for babies born before 34 weeks gestational age. Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children developed a quality improvement approach to improve breastfeeding of preterm infants by strengthening feeding support, non-separation, and kangaroo mother care (KMC). METHODS: To determine breastfeeding outcomes following discharge and explore factors associated with improved feeding, mothers of infants under 34 we

Microfabrication Process Development for a Polymer-Based Lab-on-Chip Concept Applied in Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroelectrochemistry.

Micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) combining sensing and microfluidics functionalities, as are common in Lab-on-Chip (LoC) devices, are increasingly based on polymers. Benefits of polymers include tunable material properties, the possibility of surface functionalization, compatibility with many micro and nano patterning techniques, and optical transparency. Often, additional materials, such as metals, ceramics, or silicon, are needed for functional or auxiliary purposes, e.g., as electrodes. Hybrid patterning and integration of material composites require an increasing range of fabricatio

MRI-GUIDED RADIOTHERAPY FOR PROSTATE CANCER: A NEW PARADIGM.

Radiotherapy is one of the key treatment modalities for primary prostate cancer. During the last decade, significant advances were made in radiotherapy technology leading to increasing both physical and biological precision. Being a loco-regional treatment approach, radiotherapy requires accurate target dose deposition while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Conventional radiotherapy is based on computerized tomography (CT) images both for radiotherapy planning and image-guidance, however, shortcomings of CT as soft tissue imaging tool are well known. Nowadays, our ability to further escalat

Nuclear factor kappa B signaling within the rat nucleus accumbens core sex-dependently regulates cue-induced cocaine seeking and matrix metalloproteinase-9 expression.

Chronic drug self-administration and withdrawal are associated with distinct neuroimmune adaptations that may increase drug craving and relapse vulnerability in humans. The nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) pathway is a critical regulator of many immune- and addiction-related genes such as the extracellular matrix enzyme matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), which is a known modulator of learning, memory, and synaptic plasticity. While some studies suggest striatal NF-κB signaling may regulate drug-conditioned behavior, no studies to date have examined whether NF-κB signaling within the nucleus acc

Self-medication in nonhuman primates: A systematic evaluation of the possible function of the use of medicinal plants.

Animal self-medication is thought to provide an adaptive advantage, as species would actively respond to a disease state or homeostatic imbalances. In wild nonhuman primates, it is challenging to differentiate plant use as part of the diet or as medication, especially because self-medication can be preventive or therapeutic. Here, we aimed to compile the available potential evidence on primate self-medication modes, investigating which proposed requirements are fulfilled for each plant species reported to date. We systematically reviewed the scientific literature on plant use for potential sel

Artificial intelligence and imaging for risk prediction of pancreatic cancer: a narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: To emphasize the importance of pancreatic imaging and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) for enhanced risk prediction of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). BACKGROUND: Detecting PDAC at the early stage is challenging as the disease either remains asymptomatic or presents nonspecific symptoms. Risk prediction of PDAC is an efficient strategy as subsequent targeted screening can assist in diagnosing cancer at the early stage even before the symptoms appear. However, the lack of specific clinical and epidemiological predictors of PDAC makes prediction a highly chall
