Interventions to Treat Pediatric Iron Deficiency Anemia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To perform comparative effectiveness and safety of interventions used to treat pediatric iron deficiency anemia (IDA), and to examine risk of bias and study sources of heterogeneity across the studies. STUDY DESIGN: We searched major medical databases from inception to June 26, 2023. Eligibility criteria were children 6 months to 18 years with IDA receiving one of 3 interventions (oral iron, intravenous [IV] iron, red blood cell [RBC] transfusion). Hemoglobin change-from-baseline and incidence of adverse events were our primary outcomes. Data were synthesized quantitatively and na

Modeling monkeypox transmission with a compartmental framework to evaluate testing, isolation and public awareness strategies.

Monkeypox (mpox), a viral infectious disease affecting both humans and non-human primates, has posed significant public health challenges, particularly in light of recent global outbreaks. This study develops a deterministic mathematical model to analyze the transmission dynamics of mpox, with a focus on the effects of self-isolation, testing, and public awareness in mitigating the spread of the virus. The model is calibrated using incidence data from the United States and employs a nonlinear least squares fitting method to reflect the observed epidemic trends accurately. The analysis identifi

Identifying patterns of sexual behaviors and PrEP uptake characteristics among MSM who were eligible for PrEP: A national cross-section study.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at a high risk of HIV infection and should be offered effective preventive measures, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). However, PrEP uptake among eligible MSM was not as high as desired. Diverse research findings on how risky sexual behaviors affect PrEP uptake highlight the necessity for a comprehensive investigation. Understanding the interconnectedness of different sexual behaviors is crucial for evaluating their impact on PrEP uptake among eligible MSM. Using a proportional sampling method, we recruited 5877 MSM aged 16 years and above in mainland

Mindfulness-based intervention for depression and insulin resistance in adolescents: Protocol for BREATHE, a multisite, pilot and feasibility randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Elevated depression symptoms have been associated with higher insulin resistance in adolescents, and consequently, greater risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). Mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) may be suited for adolescents at risk for T2D given its potential to decrease depression and improve stress-related behavior/physiology underpinning insulin resistance. To prepare for a future multisite efficacy randomized controlled trial, a rigorous, multisite, pilot and feasibility study is needed to test this approach. The current paper describes the design and protocol for a multisite, pi

Mixed methods evaluation of a low-carbohydrate high-fat nutrition education program for women from underserved communities in South Africa.

South Africa faces a dual burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and communicable diseases, exacerbated by the high consumption of processed foods. The Eat Better South Africa (EBSA) program implements community-based low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) interventions to address these issues. This study evaluated the impact of EBSA's 6-week program on the metabolic health and well-being of 32 women from underserved communities. It assessed outcomes before, immediately after, and six months post-intervention (n = 21). Quantitative findings showed significant improvements in key health markers.

Barriers and facilitators to self-management among women with gestational diabetes: A systematic review using the COM-B model.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus is a common complication during pregnancy, and its prevalence rates have increased dramatically in recent years. Treatment of gestational diabetes requires the active self-management, however, this can be challenging. Understanding the barriers and facilitators of adherence to self-management recommendations is essential for designing effective interventions. AIM: To identify and synthesize barriers and facilitators to self-management of gestational diabetes reported by pregnant women. METHODS: This was a mixed-methods systematic review, including qu

Community Guide Methods for Systematic Reviews of Economic Evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Community Guide systematic economic reviews provide information on the cost, economic benefit, cost-benefit, and cost-effectiveness of public health interventions recommended by the Community Preventive Services Task Force on the basis of evidence of effectiveness. The number and variety of economic evaluation studies in public health have grown substantially over time, contributing to methodologic challenges that required updates to the methods for Community Guide systematic economic reviews. This paper describes these updated methods. METHODS: The 9-step Community Guide econom

Using Simulation to Improve Adherence to Get With the Guidelines Time to First Shock.

BACKGROUND: Evidence demonstrates that shocking patients in ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia in 2 minutes or less leads to improved outcomes. At our facility in Orlando, Florida, 4 of 7 time to first shock fallouts occurred in the intensive care unit. No standardization for conducting code situations existed in the intensive care unit. OBJECTIVE: To develop nurse simulation education and training to standardize intensive care unit code processes and improve compliance with timely defibrillation. METHODS: The sample consisted of intensive care unit nurses. Interve

Optimizing Surveillance and Re-intervention Strategy Following Elective Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: EVAR for abdominal aortic aneurysm has an initial survival advantage over OR, but more frequent complications increase costs and long-term aneurysm-related mortality. Randomized controlled trials of EVAR versus OR have shown EVAR is not cost-effective over a patient's lifetime. However, in the EVAR-1 trial, postoperative surveillance may have been sub-optimal, as the importance of sac growth as a predictor of graft failure was overlooked. METHODS: Real-world data informed a discrete event simulation model of postoperative outcomes following EVAR. Outcomes observed EVAR-1 were comp

Patient and Family Engagement in Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) Prevention: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are detrimental to health and are largely preventable with adherence to CAUTI prevention guidelines. Patient and family engagement in CAUTI prevention is often encouraged in these guidelines; however, little is known about how this engagement is operationalized in practice. A systematic review was conducted to synthesize the content, format, and outcomes of interventions that engage patients and/or families in CAUTI prevention. METHODS: Two reviewers independently screened records from four databases up to March 2021 and search

Hypertension in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

In recent decades low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have been witnessing a significant shift toward raised blood pressure; yet in LMICs, only 1 in 3 are aware of their hypertension status, and ≈8% have their blood pressure controlled. This rising burden widens the inequality gap, contributes to massive economic hardships of patients and carers, and increases costs to the health system, facing challenges such as low physician-to-patient ratios and lack of access to medicines. Established risk factors include unhealthy diet (high salt and low fruit and vegetable intake), physical inactivi

Pretreatment motivation and therapy outcomes in eating disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying modifiable predictors of outcomes following treatment for eating disorders may help to tailor interventions to patients' individual needs, improve treatment efficacy, and develop new interventions. The goal of this meta-analysis was to quantify the association between pretreatment motivation and posttreatment changes in eating disorder symptomology. METHOD: We reviewed 196 longitudinal studies reporting on change on indices of overall eating-disorder symptomatology, weight gain, binge-eating, vomiting, anxiety/depression, and treatment adherence. A randomized waitlist-controlled trial comparing detached mindfulness and cognitive restructuring in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Whereas research has demonstrated the efficacy of cognitive restructuring (CR) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), little is known about the efficacy of specific metacognitive interventions such as detached mindfulness (DM). Therefore, this study compared the efficacy of CR and DM as stand-alone interventions. DESIGN: We conducted a randomized waitlist-controlled trial. n = 43 participants were randomly assigned to either DM or CR. Out of those participants, n = 21 participants had been previously assigned to a two-week waitlist condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In both condi

Treatment delivery strategies for eating disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The traditional model of treatment delivery, based on a psychotherapeutic intervention delivered by a trained professional, in a one-to-one relationship, occurring in a treatment setting context (e.g., clinic, private office, and hospital), highly restricts access to the best standards of care to all of those in need.In this article, we will be focusing on treatment delivering methods for eating disorders that depart from the traditional mode of delivery. We will focus on the use of self-help strategies, both in a pure self-help format, and with external minimal support, gui

Correlates of tobacco quit attempts and missed opportunity for tobacco cessation among the adult population in India.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco cessation is crucial to reduce tobacco-related diseases and premature deaths. Quitting efforts can be enhanced through brief routine interventions at health facilities because healthcare providers are highly trusted, resulting in stronger adherence to their advice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study used data on tobacco users aged 15-49 years (n = 93,522) collected as part of the fourth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 2015-16. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were carried out using STATA (version 13) to understand the socioeconomic and demographic cor

Study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled factorial design trial to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of reactive focal mass drug administration and vector control to reduce malaria transmission in the low endemic setting of Namibia.

INTRODUCTION: To interrupt malaria transmission, strategies must target the parasite reservoir in both humans and mosquitos. Testing of community members linked to an index case, termed reactive case detection (RACD), is commonly implemented in low transmission areas, though its impact may be limited by the sensitivity of current diagnostics. Indoor residual spraying (IRS) before malaria season is a cornerstone of vector control efforts. Despite their implementation in Namibia, a country approaching elimination, these methods have been met with recent plateaus in transmission reduction. This s

A Review of Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease Research in Malaysia.

A total of 39 titles related to rheumatic fever or rheumatic heart disease in Malaysia were found with online literature search dating back to their inceptions and through 2014. Additional publications from conference journals were included. Nine papers were selected based on clinical relevance and future research implications. There were no population-based studies on the incidence or prevalence of ARF or RHD. In the 1980s, the incidence of admission due to ARF ranged from 2 to 21.1 per 100 000 paediatric admission per year. The burden of disease was significant in the adult population; 74.5%
