The many faces of pseudomyxoma peritonei: a radiological review based on 30 cases.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the most common imaging features of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), as well as the histologic subtypes of the primary tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 30 cases of women with pathologically confirmed PMP. Only computed tomography scans were available. All cases were retrospectively studied by four radiologists, working independently. We identified the most common imaging findings, the predominant primary site of the disease, and the growth pattern. The most common sites of recurrence were also analyzed. RESULTS: The most common computed tomography finding was p

Therapy of Patients with Neuroendocrine Neoplasia-Evidence-Based Approaches and New Horizons.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) show low but increasing incidence and originate in multiple organs, including the pancreas, midgut, caecum, rectum, appendix, colon, and lungs. Due to their stunning genetic, histological, and clinical variability, diagnosis and treatment of NETs are challenging. In addition, low incidence and high variability hamper the implementation of high evidence trials. Therefore, guidelines do not cover the complexity of NETs and, frequently, treatment decisions are taken by interdisciplinary tumor conferences at comprehensive cancer centers. Treatment aims are (i) control

The learning curve in diagnosing acute appendicitis with emergency sonography among novice emergency medicine residents.

PURPOSE: Ultrasonography (US) has good accuracy for diagnosing appendicitis when it is performed by emergency physicians. This study aimed to determine the amount of experience that is required to achieve competency in this field. METHODS: Three novice emergency medicine residents completed a 1-day training course regarding the US diagnosis of appendicitis. Then, they performed appendix US in the emergency department on patients complaining of right lower quadrant pain. All included patients also underwent computed tomography or US performed by a board-certified radiologist, to confirm the em

Taxonomic review of the subgenus Andrena (Poecilandrena) (Hymenoptera: Andrenidae) in Israel and the Levant.

Andrena (Poecilandrena) Hedicke is a subgenus of small solitary bees, with the greatest diversity in the Eastern Mediterranean Region-an important but understudied biodiversity hotspot for bees. We studied Andrena (Poecilandrena) collected mostly in Israel and the West Bank, and make several additions to the regional fauna. We provide the first comprehensive review of Andrena (Poecilandrena) species currently known from Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, including diagnostic keys to females and males, descriptions of new species and unknown sexes, and detailed information for ea

Severe peritoneal sclerosis after repeated pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy with oxaliplatin (PIPAC OX): report of two cases and literature survey.

Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) is a new laparoscopic administration of chemotherapy for peritoneal metastasis (PM). PIPAC is repeated every 5th week, and seems to stabilize or improve quality of life, and might improve survival. So far, PIPAC has been well tolerated. With this paper, we aim to highlight a potential severe adverse reaction, as we describe the first cases of severe peritoneal sclerosis (SPS) caused by PIPAC. Patients with isolated PM were included in a prospective PIPAC protocol. Following insufflation of normothermic CO2, laparoscopy was performed at a

Deciding to Remove or Leave a Peritoneal Loose Body: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND Peritoneal loose bodies, also known as peritoneal mice, are rare findings and they present either with nonspecific symptoms or are found incidentally during exploration and autopsy. Usually, they have no clinical significance and require no specific treatment. We report a case of a giant peritoneal loose body found incidentally in the abdominal cavity of a patient who presented with abdominal pain and hematuria. CASE REPORT Our patient was a 58-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and hematuria. Abdominal non-contrast computed tomography (CT) and subsequent CT abdomen and

Pitfalls in ultrasound imaging of the stomach and the intestines.

The gastrointestinal tract is an extraordinary human organ in terms of its morphology and function. Its complex structure and enormous length as well as frequent presence of gas discourage many doctors performing ultrasound examination from its exploration. Moreover, there are anatomical structures in multiple locations which can mimic certain abnormalities. It is difficult to present an exhaustive account of the problem of gastrointestinal tract ultrasound imaging errors in a single work; therefore, this study focuses mainly on false positive errors which usually result from a lack of knowled

[Structured interviewing of children in suspected child endangerment cases: The German version of the revised NICHD Investigative Interview Protocol].

Interviewing a child of a suspected abuse (physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, Munchausen-by-proxy syndrome) is subject to complex risks of suggestion and distortion. The use of a standardized interview protocol as part of the investigation can significantly increase the scope and validity of the child's report in different settings (for example, pediatrics, child welfare services, court). In this paper, the interview protocol provided by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in its revised and complete version is presented in German and made available for free

Comparison of Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Neurodevelopmental Disorders Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Diagnostic Criteria.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, increased attention has been focused on the diagnosis of the most prevalent category of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders (ARNDs). In 2013, proposed criteria for neurodevelopmental disorders associated with prenatal alcohol exposure (ND-PAE) were included in the appendix of the latest revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The concordance of the 2 sets of criteria is unknown. This study examines the overlap in diagnostic criteria for ND-PAE and the ARND Behavioral Checklist in children. METHODS:

[Coexistence of acute appendicitis and dengue fever: A case report].

BACKGROUND: Dengue is the most important human viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. It can be asymptomatic or it can present in any of its 3clinical forms: Dengue fever, dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. However, some atypical manifestations have been reported in surgical emergencies caused by acute appendicitis in patients with dengue fever. CLINICAL CASE: We report the case of an 18-year-old Mexican male who presented to the emergency department of the General Hospital of Culiacan, Sinaloa, with symptoms of dengue fever, accompanied by crampy abdominal pain with posit

The complex interrelations between two paroxysmal disorders: headache and epilepsy.

The interrelations between headache/migraine and epileptic seizures are an interesting topic, still lacking a systematization, which is the objective of the present revision. We organize the general setting on: (a) a distinction between pre-ictal, ictal, post-ictal and inter-ictal headaches, assuming "ictal" as epileptic seizure, and (b) the kind of headache, if it is of migraine type or not. Concerning pre-ictal migraine/headache, the necessity of its differentiation from an epileptic headache presenting as an aura of a seizure is stressed; this is connected with the indefiniteness of the ter

Multiple components of PKA and TGF-β pathways are mutated in pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a subtype of mucinous adenocarcinoma mainly restricted to the peritoneal cavity and most commonly originating from the appendix. The genetic background of PMP is poorly understood and no targeted treatments are currently available for this fatal disease. While RAS signaling pathway is affected in most if not all PMP cases and over half of them also have a mutation in the GNAS gene, other genetic alterations and affected pathways are, to a large degree, poorly known. In this study, we sequenced whole coding genome of nine PMP tumors and paired normal tissues in o

Appendicitis in a Neutropenic Patient: A Multicentric Retrospective Study.

To study the management of acute appendicitis in neutropenic patients, we retrospectively reviewed cases of acute appendicitis in neutropenic children treated for cancer. The patients' demographics, medical records, and outcomes were tracked. We compared nonoperative treatment versus emergency or delayed surgery. The cases of 30 patients with a mean age of 8.8 years in 12 French departments of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology between 1995 and 2013 were studied. Most patients (90%) were treated for hematological malignancies. Seven of the 30 children were successfully treated with exclusive medica

[NOVELTIES IN PERICARDIAL DISEASES: A FOCUSED REVIEW OF THE LATEST EUROPEAN GUIDELINES].

More than a decade has elapsed since the first international guidelines on the diagnosis and management of pericardial diseases were issued by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in 2004. Since then, significant advances have been made in this field due to several randomized double blinded controlled trials and also retrospective, as well as prospective, cohort studies that were conducted during this time frame. However, despite the amount of knowledge that has been accumulated, only Spanish and Brazilian national societies of cardiology have so far published national guidelines on the ma

Interrogation of a ring-resonator ultrasound sensor using a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

We experimentally demonstrate an interrogation procedure of a ring-resonator ultrasound sensor using a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The sensor comprises a silicon ring resonator (RR) located on a silicon-oxide membrane, designed to have its lowest vibrational mode in the MHz range, which is the range of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging. Ultrasound incident on the membrane excites its vibrational mode and as a result induces a modulation of the resonance wavelength of the RR, which is a measure of the amplitude of the ultrasound waves. The interrogation procedure developed is

The pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of metastatic tumors to the ovary: a comprehensive review.

Secondary tumors of the ovary account for 10-25% of all ovarian malignancies. The most common tumors that give rise to ovarian metastases include breast, colorectal, endometrial, stomach, and appendix cancer. The correct diagnosis of secondary ovarian tumors may be challenging as they are not infrequently misdiagnosed as primary ovarian cancer, particularly in the case of mucinous adenocarcinomas. The distinction from the latter is essential, as it requires different treatment. Immunohistochemistry plays an important role in distinguishing primary ovarian tumors from extra-ovarian metastases a
