Information on which to base assessments of risk from environments contaminated with anthrax spores.

Although there has been a considerable amount of research conducted into Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, the data are widely disseminated in the scientific literature and are therefore not always easy to assimilate. In view of continuing concern about potential anthrax contamination in environmental materials and sites, this review brings together the currently available information relating to the health hazards from B. anthracis. The relevance of the available information for risk assessment purposes is assessed.

[Children typhoid fever in Saigon (Vietnam) : epidemiological and biological aspects (author's transl)].

A review of 130 children cases of typhoid fever in Saigon (Vietnam). Leuco-neutropenia is far from regular but thrombopenia is frequent. The typhoid bacillus is generally cultivated from blood during the first two weeks of the evolution. There is evidence in most S. typhi strains of a plasmid resistance for streptomycine, chloramphenicol, tetracycline and sulfamides. Strains of the various other enterobacteria of the intestinal flora are generally resistant for many more antibiotics than S. typhi.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis Bacteremia in a Preterm Neonate: A Rare Cause of Early-Onset Sepsis.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis (S. paucimobilis), an environmental Gram-negative bacillus, is a rare cause of clinical infections in neonates. This case report describes a preterm neonate with early-onset sepsis (EOS) caused by S. paucimobilis. Identification was achieved using the VITEK 2 system, and targeted antimicrobial therapy with meropenem, vancomycin, and metronidazole resulted in clinical improvement. Early recognition and microbiological diagnosis are essential for managing unusual pathogens in neonatal intensive care settings.

Chryseobacterium indologenes sepsis in a pediatric patient.

Chryseobacterium indologenes is a Gram-negative aerobic bacillus commonly found in nosocomial environments, particularly in patients with prolonged hospital stays or those requiring long-term invasive devices. It primarily affects elderly and immunocompromised individuals. This microorganism is associated with multidrug resistance, which is a crucial factor in treatment decisions. Here, we report a case of C. indologenes infection in an infant following the ingestion of milk formula diluted with untreated water.

The Fulminating Course of Infection Caused by Shewanella algae: A Case Report.

Shewanella algae, a Gram-negative bacillus found in warm saltwater environments, has been increasingly recognized as a human pathogen that can cause infection of the skin and soft tissue, ear, blood, and intra-abdominal. In this case, we report a Shewanella algae infection that caused sepsis, renal insufficiency, cardiac dysfunction, fistula and massive pleural effusion after surgery in a 73-year-old man with cancer of the esophagus and cardia.

Two cases with bacteremia suspected to be due to relatively rare Pseudomonas (Flavimonas) oryzihabitans.

Pseudomonas oryzihabitans (formerly Flavimonas oryzihabitans) is a glucose non-fermentative, Gram-negative bacillus which is rarely isolated from human specimens. When isolated, it is on very rare occasion as a causative pathogen of catheter-related bloodstream infection in an immunocompromised patient. Herein, we describe two hematological malignancy patients suspected to have P. oryzihabitans bacteremia. We also review cases with bacteremia due to this pathogen and its microbiological characteristics.

Campylobacter fetus cellulitis in an immunocompromised patient: case report and review of the literature.

Campylobacter fetus is an opportunist Gram-negative bacillus. The most frequent clinical manifestation is bacteriemia but it can also be responsable for soft tissue infections, endovascular infections, meningitis, peritonitis and thrombophlebitis. Campylobacter fetus cellulitis has been described, but rarely identified in subcutaneous puncture samples. We report a case of an immunocompromised patient with Campylobacter fetus bacteriemia associated with a soft tissue infection whose subcutaneous puncture also revealed the bacteria.

New FDA test detects fake bioterror agents.

Some people have made phony terrorist threats involving bioterror agents such as anthrax (Bacillus anthracis). But the agents really turn out to be harmless substances. These actions have resulted in considerable economic loss and social anxiety. In a bid to alleviate the problem, researchers at the Food and Drug Administration's National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) are developing a quick, cost-effective way to distinguish fake materials from authentic bioterror agents.

The activity of p-methoxybenzylisothiocyanate against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Haemophilus ducreyi, and other microorganisms.

p-Methoxybenzylisothiocyanate was isolated from Lepidium bonariense and found to be responsible for the plants antimicrobial and STD activity. MIC determinations were conducted for p-methoxybenzylisothiocyanate on Haemophilus ducreyi, Neisseria gonorrheae, Candida albicans, Bacillus subtilus, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter sp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Psuedomanas aeruginosa. An in vitro cellular toxicity assay showed that at 100 microM (17,9 microg/mL) p-methoxybenzylisothiocyanate is not toxic to living cells.

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica: An Uncommon Cause of Peritonitis In Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Peritonitis is a major complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and due to its gravity, it remains the primary reason to switch from PD to hemodialysis. Elizabethkingia meningoseptica, a non-fermentative Gram-negative bacillus, is rarely encountered as a pathogen causing peritonitis in adults. We present here a case report of an acquired infection with this organism in adult on PD. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of infection with this organism in a continuous ambulatory PD patient in Tunisia.

Opinions 97, 98 and 99.

The International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes has formally endorsed the conclusions of the Judicial Commission on three pending Requests for an Opinion, thereby allowing the corresponding Opinions to be issued. According to Opinion 97, the request for the conservation of the name Streptomyces scabies is denied, allowing the continued use of the correction Streptomyces scabiei. Opinions 98 and 99 conclude that in the absence of associated authentic type material, the names Bacillus aeolius and Pectinatus portalensis, respectively, are not validly published.

Cutaneous Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (erysipeloid) infection in an immunocompromised child.

Erysipeloid, a cutaneous infection with the gram-positive bacillus Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, is typically an occupational dermatosis seen in persons working with livestock or involved in commercial fishing (fishmongers). Other more-generalized forms of infection with this organism also exist, including a septic form usually associated with endocarditis. Many infections may be self-limited. They have rarely been reported in children or in immunocompromised patients. This microbe is sensitive to many mainstream antibiotic agents.

Melioidosis complicated by pericarditis.

Melioidosis is a bacterial infection caused by the Gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia pseudomallei. We report an unusual case of melioidosis that presented as a pyrexia of unknown origin complicated by pericardial effusion. Our patient received a 6-week course of intravenous antibiotics, followed by 8 months of oral antibiotics, and made a complete recovery. This report illustrates the diagnostic and therapeutic challenge that clinicians may encounter when faced with this potentially fatal infection.

[Acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by pulmonary nocardiosis in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus].

Nocardia is a gram-positive bacillus that infects mainly immunodepressed patients. Its association with lupus erythematosus has been described only occasionally and we have found no reports in the literature of an association between lupus and acute respiratory distress syndrome due to pulmonary nocardiosis. We present such a case and discuss the mechanisms that make this lung infection so virulent as well as its epidemiological and microbiological characteristics, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment.

Cat scratch disease. A therapeutic dilemma.

Cat scratch disease, a relatively common infectious disease, is caused by a small gram-negative pleomorphic bacillus. The course of CSD is usually benign and self-limiting and is characterized by tender regional chronic (3 weeks or longer) lymphadenopathy and frequently preceded by a primary skin lesion following cat contact or scratches. Persistence of adenopathy for several months in a generally healthy patient with gradual spontaneous resolution of the enlarged node is the natural course.

Engineering the gut microbiome with metal-resistant bacteria could protect Artemia nauplii from cadmium toxicity.

Metal pollution and emerging contaminants, such as metal nanoparticles, are increasingly found in estuarine and coastal environments. These pollutants pose significant risks to aquatic life and human health and may affect food security. This study evaluates host-associated microbiome engineering as a biological method to reduce cadmium toxicity in an aquatic invertebrate model. We designed a consortium of metal-resistant bacteria through systematic screening and exclusion of isolates from various marine ecosystems. This process resulted in a functionally compatible consortium comprising Bacill

Physicochemical and microbial changes in Raw beef meat induced by radiation.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of various electron beam irradiation doses on microbial inactivation and physicochemical properties of raw beef. The main research question was to determine the dose required to effectively eliminate pathogenic microorganisms without substantially compromising meat quality. Raw beef samples were treated with electron beam doses of 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9 kGy. Microbial inactivation was assessed by enumerating colonies of Salmonella Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Escherichia coli. Based on the inactiva
