Gene x Environment interactions in speech sound disorder predict language and preliteracy outcomes.

Few studies have investigated the role of gene x environment interactions (G x E) in speech, language, and literacy disorders. Currently, there are two theoretical models, the diathesis-stress model and the bioecological model, that make opposite predictions about the expected direction of G x E, because environmental risk factors may either strengthen or weaken the effect of genes on phenotypes. The purpose of the current study was to test for G x E at two speech sound disorder and reading disability linkage peaks using a sib-pair linkage design and continuous measures of socioeconomic status

Is early intervention effective in preventing ADHD?

The purpose of this study was to examine whether early intervention by non-pharmacologic means (occupational therapy and speech therapy) can decrease the incidence of ADHD in a group of preschool children at high risk for developing this syndrome. Fifty-one children who suffered at the age of 2-4.5 years from inattention, speech delay and/or motor delay with or without hyperactivity were reexamined at the age of 8-10 years (average 8.9 +/- 1.0 years) by a developmental pediatrician and a developmental psychologist, using the following tests and questionnaires: WISC-R IQ test, Touwen and Precht

Effects of nutrients (in food) on the structure and function of the nervous system: update on dietary requirements for brain. Part 1: micronutrients.

The objective of this update is to give an overview of the effects of dietary nutrients on the structure and certain functions of the brain. As any other organ, the brain is elaborated from substances present in the diet (sometimes exclusively, for vitamins, minerals, essential amino-acids and essential fatty acids, including omega- 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids). However, for long it was not fully accepted that food can have an influence on brain structure, and thus on its function, including cognitive and intellectuals. In fact, most micronutrients (vitamins and trace-elements) have been dir

Perceptions of Interdisciplinary Cleft Treatment: A Qualitative Pilot Study of Children With Cleft Palate and Their Parents.

BACKGROUND: Treating children with a cleft palate with or without a cleft lip (CP±L) requires an interdisciplinary approach. While this coordinated, long-term treatment approach intends to enhance children's quality of life (QoL), it may still be perceived as burdensome for the children and their environment. AIMS: This study investigated the perspectives of both children with a CP±L and their parents, with a particular focus on the psychological and financial impact of interdisciplinary cleft treatment. METHODS: A total of 10 parents (mean age of 48.0 years) and 7 children with CP±L (mean a

Does Right-Sided Language Lateralization on BOLD-fMRI Affect Postoperative Language Outcome for AVM Patients?

AIM: For cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) involving language areas, right-sided language lateralization on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been reported, which is regarded as language cortex reorganization. The authors attempted to study if this right-sided language lateralization affects postoperative language outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical and imaging data of 43 right-handed AVM patients who underwent preoperative fMRI were retrospectively reviewed. All lesions involved the language cortex, with the Broca area involved in 13 patients and the Wernicke are

An investigation of visual contour integration ability in relation to writing performance in primary school students.

A previous study found a visual deficit in contour integration in English readers with dyslexia (Simmers & Bex, 2001). Visual contour integration may play an even more significant role in Chinese handwriting particularly due to its logographic presentation (Lam, Au, Leung, & Li-Tsang, 2011). The current study examined the relationship between children's performance in visual contour (VC) integration and Chinese handwriting. Twenty students from grade 3 to grade 6 were recruited (M=9.51, SD=1.02) from a mainstream primary school using the convenience sampling method. Ten students were identifie

Evaluation for language and speech development in Kabuki make-up syndrome: a case report.

Kabuki make-up syndrome (KMS) is defined as a rare syndrome with mental retardation, growth deficiency and multiple anomalies of unknown cause. Cases have a characteristic facial appearance of broad and low auricles, wide forehead, broad and flattened nose root. In this article, 4-year, 10-month-old boy with speech delay reported due to characteristics of the facial appearance is considered as KMS, a rare syndrome. Otological, audiological and developmental evaluation of the patient consisted of six parameters. (1) ENT examination: normal. (2) Audiological findings were at normal hearing level

Rethinking a right hemisphere deficit in ADHD.

INTRODUCTION: Early observations from lesion studies suggested right hemisphere (RH) dysfunction in ADHD. However, a strictly right-lateralized deficit has not been well supported. An alternatively view suggests increased R > L asymmetry of brain function and abnormal interhemispheric interaction. If true, RH pathology in ADHD should reflect interhemispherically networked and overactivated functioning. The authors evaluated these assertions. METHOD: Four elements of lateralized brain function were measured: LH specialized, RH specialized, LH with interhemispheric processing (LH/IH), and RH wi

Landau-Kleffner syndrome: long-term follow-up.

PURPOSE: Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) is a rare entity characterized by epilepsy and aphasia. It occurs in previously normal children, usually between three and seven years of age. The long-term outcome of LKS is not completely clear. The aim of this study is to verify the long-term follow-up of a group of patients with LKS, focusing on clinical and electroencephalographic (EEG) aspects, and quality of life. METHODS: This was a transversal study. Between November 2006 and April 2007 seven patients with previous diagnosis of LKS were interviewed. They had had a follow-up of three to 16 years

Reading affect in the face and voice: neural correlates of interpreting communicative intent in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

CONTEXT: Understanding a speaker's communicative intent in everyday interactions is likely to draw on cues such as facial expression and tone of voice. Prior research has shown that individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) show reduced activity in brain regions that respond selectively to the face and voice. However, there is also evidence that activity in key regions can be increased if task demands allow for explicit processing of emotion. OBJECTIVES: To examine the neural circuitry underlying impairments in interpreting communicative intentions in ASD using irony comprehension as a

Developing social interaction and understanding in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a groupwork intervention.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with social interaction and understanding lie at the heart of the communication disorder that characterises the autism spectrum. This study sought to improve social communication for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by means of a groupwork intervention focusing on social and emotional perspective-taking, conversation skills, and friendship skills. It also aimed to address some of the limitations of previous interventions, including a lack of generalisation to other settings, so as to maximise inclusion in the community. METHOD: A group of 46 high functi

Exploring the utility of narrative analysis in diagnostic decision making: picture-bound reference, elaboration, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

PURPOSE: To evaluate classification accuracy and clinical feasibility of a narrative analysis tool for identifying children with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). METHOD: Picture-elicited narratives generated by 16 age-matched pairs of school-aged children (FASD vs. typical development [TD]) were coded for semantic elaboration and reference strategy by judges who were unaware of age, gender, and group membership of the participants. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to examine the classification accuracy of the resulting set of narrative measures for making 2 cl
