Preferences Among Expert Physicians in Areas of Uncertainty in Venous Thromboembolism Management: Results from a Multiple-Choice Questionnaire.

Background/Objectives: Prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a major clinical issue in hospitalized patients. Some aspects of VTE management lack clarity due to differing physicians' opinions and behaviors. Methods: A multidisciplinary steering committee identified two main areas of uncertainty: VTE prophylaxis and PE management in special settings. A multiple-choice questionnaire including 10 statements was circulated to 183 doctors trained in VTE management. The expected benefit-to-harm ratio was represe

Quality of life in people with herpes zoster: a cross-sectional study in China.

INTRODUCTION: Herpes zoster (HZ), affecting 14.9 million people aged ≥ 50 globally in 2020, imposes a growing burden in aging populations due to its association with chronic pain, psychological distress, and socioeconomic disparities. This study aimed to evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among people with HZ and explore its socioeconomic and clinical determinants in China. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey to investigate the HRQoL of 2,566 herpes zoster patients across seven Chinese cities using the EQ-5D-5 L and VAS-100 instruments. Multivariate linear regression m

The role of breast cancer-related arm lymphedema in physical functioning and physical activity participation among long-term African American breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer-related arm lymphedema (BCRL) is a common chronic and debilitating condition that involves accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the arm or hand. Limited data are available on BCRL in African American women. Lack of physical activity (PA) and poor physical functioning (PF) are both associated with increased morbidity and mortality among breast cancer survivors. We examined the association of BCRL with PA and PF among African American breast cancer survivors. METHODS: 323 African American women who previously participated in a case-only study in three states (TN, GA, SC) co

Potentially avoidable hospitalizations and associated factors among older people in French Guiana using the French National Health Data System.

Knowing the prevalence of potentially avoidable hospitalizations (PAHs) and the factors associated with them is essential if preventive action is to be taken. Studies on PAHs mainly concern adults, and very few have been carried out in South America. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no study on PAHs in French Guiana, particularly among older adults. This case-control study aimed to estimate the prevalence of PAHs in the Guianese population aged over 65 and to analyze their associated factors. We used the 2017-2019 data from the French National Health Service database (Système Natio

Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors Associated with Impoverishment Due to Out-of-Pocket Health Expenditure in São Paulo City, Brazil.

The rise in obesity and related chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) during recent decades in Brazil has been associated with increases in the financial burden and risk of impoverishment due to out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenditure. Thus, this study investigated trends and predictors associated with impoverishment due to health expenditure, in the population of São Paulo city, Brazil, between 2003 and 2015. Household data from the São Paulo Health Survey (n = 5475) were used to estimate impoverishment linked to OOP health expenses, using the three thresholds of International Poverty Lines

Trajectories of mental health problems in unaccompanied young refugees in Germany and the impact of post-migration factors - a longitudinal study.

Unaccompanied young refugees (UYRs) are at an elevated risk of continuing psychological distress, including posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), depression, and anxiety. The post-arrival situation in a host country plays an important role in increasing or reducing mental health risks for UYRs. This study aimed to examine the trajectory of psychological distress and post-migration factors experienced by UYRs in Germany with five assessments every six months over a two-year period.Standardised self-report questionnaires were used to assess PTSS (CATS-2), depression (PHQ-9), and anxiety (GAD-7)

Societal beliefs about pain may be more balanced than previously thought. Results of the Guernsey pain survey.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal pain is multidimensional and associated with significant societal impact. Persistent or chronic pain is a public health priority. A step towards high-value care is a contemporary understanding of pain. While pain-related knowledge has been examined in specific conditions (e.g. neck pain) knowledge of the public's broader understanding regarding musculoskeletal pain per se, warrants investigation. This study examined the public's knowledge and beliefs regarding musculoskeletal pain and pain management. METHODS: This observational cohort study was conducted in Guerns

Early-life exposures and long-term health: adverse gestational environments and the programming of offspring renal and vascular disease.

According to the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease hypothesis, exposure to certain environmental influences during early life may be a key determinant of fetal development and short- and long-term offspring health. Indeed, adverse conditions encountered during the fetal, perinatal, and early childhood stages can alter normal development and growth, as well as put the offspring at elevated risk of developing long-term health conditions in adulthood, including chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular diseases. Of relevance in understanding the mechanistic basis of these long-term heal

Risk of Kidney Failure in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease Undergoing Colectomy: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is frequently accompanied by kidney complications. Potential triggers or subpopulations at high-risk of kidney problems are not well-elucidated. We hypothesized that surgical interventions, specifically colectomy, might in part explain this risk. METHODS: This study was a nationwide Swedish cohort study comprising 82,051 individuals with biopsy-proven IBD diagnosed during 1965 to 2017, with follow-up until 2019. We investigated the association between incident colectomy (time-varying exposure) and future risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) and

Examining the impact of renal dysfunction and diabetes on post-myocardial infarction mortality: insights from a comprehensive retrospective cohort study across different age groups.

Aim. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) contribute significantly to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality, with prevalence increasing. The evolving demographic of myocardial infarction (MI) patients, influenced by sedentary lifestyles and advanced medical care, lacks understanding regarding the interplay of CKD, DM, age, and post-MI mortality. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating the long-term impact of CKD and DM on post-MI mortality across age groups. Methods. A retrospective cohort study utilized data from the Estonian Myocardial Infarction Registry (E

Case report: A community case study of the human-animal bond in animal-assisted therapy: the experiences of psychiatric prisoners with therapy dogs.

Prisoners frequently experience chronic loneliness and lack social support, which can exacerbate their struggles with incarceration. According to attachment theory, individuals who are insecurely attached may be more likely to develop unstable relationships and engage in antisocial behavior as adults. In 2015 an animal-assisted therapy (AAT) program was implemented in a Canadian forensic psychiatric facility/prison, a "hybrid" facility that adheres to federal legislation regarding correctional services but follows provincial mental health legislation. The program centers on the development of

Ischemic and Bleeding Outcomes in Patients Who Underwent Percutaneous Coronary Intervention With Chronic Kidney Disease or Dialysis (from a Japanese Nationwide Registry).

The relation between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and outcomes in patients receiving percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is thought to be bidirectional; these patients are at a higher risk of ischemic and bleeding events. From a Japanese nationwide PCI registry, ischemic (cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal ischemic stroke) and bleeding events (fatal or nonfatal major bleeding) 1 year after discharge among patients who had second- or newer-generation drug-eluting stent implantation were analyzed. Patients on oral anticoagulants were excluded. Patients were st
