A Qualitative Analysis of Human-Animal Interactions with Respect to Zoonoses in Nepal.

Infectious diseases of zoonotic origin are a serious threat to human health and livelihoods globally. Habitat encroachment and deforestation bring humans and animals into contact, increase potential for disease spread, and foster human-animal conflict. Our aim, using thematic analysis, was to qualitatively examine the zoonotic disease landscape in Nepal from public, policymaker, and healthcare practitioner perspectives, and to describe key human-animal interactions. Community participants at six sites were interviewed or took part in focus groups (n = 73); 20 healthcare practitioner and policy

Prevalence and demographic characteristics of high-need community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan.

By early screening, the high-need older adults who require multiple care needs and resources can be identified and the necessary assistance can then be provided. However, a precise definition of and related research on high-need older adults are limited. Identifying older adults with high needs is of practical urgency. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of high-need community-dwelling older adults and to identify the characteristic differences between high-need older adults and those without high needs. This cross-sectional descriptive survey research was conducted between July and

From non-use to covert and overt use of contraception: Identifying community and individual factors informing Nigerian women's degree of contraceptive empowerment.

OBJECTIVE: In Nigeria, unmet need for contraception is high despite improved access to modern contraception. To identify factors that support Nigerian women's contraceptive decisions to achieve their reproductive goals, in the presence or absence of their partner's support, we seek to identify individual/couple and community level determinants of a spectrum of contraceptive practices, from non-use to covert and overt use of contraception. METHODS: Data were drawn from a national probability survey conducted by Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020 in Nigeria in 2017-2018. A sample of

Asymptomatic occult cysto-biliary communication without bile into cavity of the liver hydatid cyst: a pitfall in conservative surgery.

BACKGROUND: An occult cysto-biliary communication in liver hydatid disease is still a major problem in surgical practice. Radiologic and intraoperative findings may not be helpful to detect cysto-biliary communications in some asymptomatic patients with liver hydatid disease. Biliary leakage is a troubling complication that arises after conservative surgery in patients who have occult "insidious" cysto-biliary communications. We aimed to identify the factors which are associated with the risk of occult insidious cysto-biliary communications in patients preoperatively who developed biliary leak

The Barriers and Enablers to the Use of Alternative Approaches to Restrictive Practices: A Scoping Review and Causal Loop Diagram.

AIM: The use of restrictive practices in acute mental health services has long been a contentious issue globally, with well-documented harms for both service users and the practitioners required to implement them. Existing research examining what influences the uptake of alternative approaches could benefit from synthesis through a qualitative systems thinking lens, enabling deeper insights into key leverage points and the development of dynamic hypotheses. This study aimed to review the literature and develop a Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) to visualise how interconnected pathways within the lite

Induction of Medication for Opioid Use Disorder in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Overdoses and deaths from synthetic opioids grew sharply in the past decade. Most people with opioid use disorder (OUD) do not receive recommended evidence-based treatment: nationally, 72% to 87% of people who need OUD treatment do not receive medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Little is known about practice teams' experiences with home, office, and telehealth induction for MOUD, particularly in primary care. METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews with primary care clinicians and staff from February through September 2023 to understand experiences providing MOUD v

A mixed methods study investigating the quality of urinary and faecal continence assessment and management in residential aged care: Challenges, implications and solutions.

OBJECTIVE: Incontinence is one of the main reasons for institutionalisation into residential aged care. It is linked with increased falls, skin breakdown, depression, social isolation and impaired quality of life. Studies over the past decade have demonstrated poor-quality incontinence care, which has led to ongoing development of best practice guidelines and educational resources. This study investigated current practices, and staff and resident experiences with continence assessment and management, in comparison with best practice guidelines. METHODS: This concurrent mixed methods study was

Parents' experiences of care offered after stillbirth: An international online survey of high and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth, the death of a baby before birth, is associated with significant psychological and social consequences that can be mitigated by respectful and supportive bereavement care. The absence of high-level evidence to support the broad scope of perinatal bereavement practices means that offering a range of options identified as valued by parents has become an important indicator of care quality. This study aimed to describe bereavement care practices offered to parents across different high-income and middle-income countries. METHODS: An online survey of parents of stillborn b

Understanding pharmacists' values: a qualitative study of ideals and dilemmas in UK pharmacy practice.

Pharmacy, like other health care professions, is both a knowledge-based and a value-based profession. However, the values that inform practice activities are rarely made explicit. We sought to identify the values drawn on by UK pharmacists through qualitative interviews on day-to-day practice activities focused around practitioners' conceptions of 'the good pharmacist', good practice and their experiences of ethical issues and dilemmas. The study was based upon loosely structured, one-to-one interviews of 38 selected practitioners reflecting a range of practice roles and settings. The intervie

FHSA in Wales trains receptionists and practice nurses.

Local health strategies had identified training for GP and clinic receptionists as a way to help meet targets on reducing unwanted teenage pregnancy and sexual health. As the "gateway" to the surgery, receptionists have a vital part to play in making young people feel welcome. The practice nurse is also a frontline contact person, often being the first health professional that a young person sees. Gwynedd Family Health Services Authority asked the FPA (Family Planning Association) to provide a pilot course for a group of receptionists and practice nurses to address their awareness of young peo

Implementation of Artificial Intelligence-Powered Patient Simulation for Communication Training in a Telehealth Transitional Care Program.

INTRODUCTION: Effective communication during care transitions is essential for patient safety and quality outcomes. Telehealth-based transitional care programs decrease 30-day readmissions and improve patient satisfaction, yet staff frequently report the need for structured communication training. Artificial intelligence (AI)-supported simulation may offer a scalable training method for health care settings with limited simulation resources. This study evaluates whether AI-powered simulation training improves communication performance during real telehealth patient encounters. METHODS: This q

Development of an Advance Care Planning Pilot Module for New York City Community Members.

Advance care planning (ACP) facilitates discussions about future healthcare decisions to ensure alignment with individuals' values, goals, and medical preferences. Despite its benefits, ACP engagement and completion of advance directives (AD) remain limited due to low awareness, misconceptions, and structural barriers. The Tisch Cancer Institute Community Outreach and Engagement Department at Mount Sinai in New York City (NYC) identified this knowledge gap as a key community need. In response, a community-based educational module was created to enhance ACP and AD knowledge. Curriculum developm

How nurses in China navigate end-of-life communication: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: End-of-life communication involves navigating diverse beliefs, values and expectations while supporting individuals and families during a highly vulnerable and emotionally charged stage of life. In China, where family-centred decision-making and taboos surrounding death are still common, nurses face distinctive challenges in navigating these conversations. OBJECTIVE: To explore and describe how experienced registered nurses learned and adapted to engaging in end-of-life communication within the Chinese cultural context, drawing on their retrospective accounts. DESIGN: A qualitati

How a community-engaged therapeutic garden immersion shapes rural intentions among medical students and strengthens student-community partnerships.

BACKGROUND: Rural workforce maldistribution persists, and short rural immersions that embed students in community life may strengthen rural intentions and deepen understanding of social determinants. This study examined a community-engaged, therapeutic gardening immersion as a novel place-based rural learning context in two Western Australian Wheatbelt towns. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was used. A pre-placement survey of Year 3 medical students (n = 22) captured baseline intentions and preferences. Post-placement, semi-structured interviews were conducted with students (n = 22) and commu

Community Co-Design of a Quick Guide to Inform Digital Health Promotion Strategies for Asymptomatic Women at Risk of Chronic Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic diseases are a leading cause of illness, disability, and death in Australian women. Co-design research methodologies offer promising approaches to developing community-centred solutions that improve engagement with preventive health. This community-driven research explored ways to improve the prevention and early detection of chronic diseases in healthy women (without symptoms of disease). METHODS: A Double Diamond approach guided the project. Areas of interest were identified through a Community Conversation, followed by co-investigation of digital health promotion stra

Implementation of a Police-Led Fentanyl Test Strip Distribution Program in Two US States.

BACKGROUND: The increase of fentanyl in the North American drug supply and lack of a reliable detection method for people who use drugs (PWUDs) warrant the broad distribution of fentanyl test strips (FTS). We evaluated the impact and reach of the One2One project in Massachusetts and Maine communities where it was implemented. METHODS: An implementation evaluation occurred from January-November 2021. Through One2One, police officers and non-police program staff received training, technical assistance, logistical support, and FTS to distribute. Local innovation was encouraged, and police were t
