Decoding Medial Entorhinal Cortical Dynamics Produces Planning-Like Alternations in Hippocampal theta Sequences.

The hippocampus is central to memory and spatial planning. A prominent candidate mechanism supporting navigational decision making is hippocampal theta sequences-brief (~120 ms) place-cell sequences representing future trajectories-which have been interpreted as planning signals based on their alternation between maze arms in T-maze tasks. However, recent work suggests that intrinsic left-right alternation in medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) theta sequences may underlie this phenomenon. Here, we test this hypothesis using a model of MEC theta dynamics in a T-maze and show that standard Bayesian

Additive convergence for visuomotor decisions.

In a recent study, Slangewal et al. explored principles of visuomotor decision-making in larval zebrafish. Visuomotor choices were revealed to be largely additive, integrating visual motion, luminance level, and luminance change during cue conflict. Brain-wide imaging mapped parallel feature circuits within the optic tectum that converge in the anterior hindbrain. Single-cell identity and morphology analyses refined this map, linking behavioral algorithms to candidate circuit implementations.

Distinct contributions of prefrontal, parietal, and cingulate signals to exploratory decisions.

Exploratory decisions could be motivated by multiple reasons, such as to reduce uncertainty of existing options (i.e. internal exploration) or to identify new alternatives (i.e. external exploration). Exploratory behaviours are related to a wide range of brain regions including the intraparietal cortex (IPS), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). However, whether these regions play unique roles signalling different aspects of exploration remain unclear. Here, we identified unique internal and external exploratory signals in the IPS and ACC, respectively. Crucial

The intrinsic, instrumental, and symbolic values of sustaining childhood vaccination in conflict settings.

The World Health Organization's Decision Framework for Vaccination in Acute Humanitarian Emergencies remains the principal global guide for vaccination prioritization and decision-making in crisis settings. However, it gives insufficient attention to sustaining vaccination as a matter of justice, as a means of upholding established human rights norms and the values that vaccines provide in these contexts. We argue that, if children living in conflict settings are to enjoy the same fundamental rights to life and health as children elsewhere, vaccination must be recognized as more than an emerge

The Architecture of Preparation: How Effective Emergency Medicine Teams Prepare for Complexity and Uncertainty.

This article reframes preparation for critically ill patients as a dynamic, compounding process that spans 3 temporal phases: strategic, operational, and reflective. Using concepts such as shared mental models, psychological safety, adaptive capacity, and the 3A's prebriefing framework (anticipate, align, and adapt), the article outlines how teams can better navigate uncertainty and complexity in real time. This article describes the consequences of preparation deficit and preparation debt, and provide practical tactics for rapid appraisal, decision-making in motion, and structured reflection.

Measurement of Human Flourishing Constructs in Evaluation of Voluntary Family Planning Interventions: A Modified Scoping Review of the Literature.

Managing one's fertility and determining the timing of one's pregnancies is integral to human flourishing. An emerging body of literature focuses on global measurement of human flourishing. Despite significant debates in the field, the goal of measuring human flourishing is to understand what it means to live life well. We conducted a modified scoping review of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method grey and white literature to identify the extent to which evaluations of interventions aiming to increase the use of voluntary family planning include measures of human flourishing. We searche

Competitive Bias in Severe Alcohol Use Disorder: An Exploration Through the Prisoner's Dilemma Paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Biased social decision-making might play a critical role in interpersonal difficulties and relapse among individuals with severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD), but its exploration remains scarce. We measured social decision-making in SAUD through an ecological iterated prisoner's dilemma paradigm, measuring cooperative versus competitive tendencies during social interactions. METHODS: Forty detoxified patients with SAUD (16 females, mean age = 50.40 years, SD = 9.82) and 40 matched control participants (17 females, mean age = 44.48 years, SD = 12.87) played six iterated prisoner's d

Telestroke systems and thrombolysis decisions: diagnostic uncertainty, treatment thresholds, and stroke mimics.

BACKGROUND: Telestroke expands access to specialist stroke care and is associated with increased use of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT). Whether this reflects improved access alone or also changes how clinicians act under diagnostic uncertainty remains unclear. PURPOSE: To review evidence on telestroke-associated thrombolysis, stroke mimics, and decision-making, and to examine the hypothesis that telestroke may influence the practical threshold for IVT. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of studies addressing telestroke implementation, IVT utilization, stroke mimic frequency and safety,

Parental hope in paediatric palliative care: a systematic review of the ethical issues in evidence-based literature.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review aims to raise awareness of the concept of parental hope, which is distinct from the idea of agency – acting on behalf of someone else. Parental hope is an important factor in end-of-life care, particularly in light of recent advances in perinatology, neonatology, and paediatric palliative care (PPC). Parenting involves autonomous agency – acting and thinking on one's own behalf – as well as making decisions for one's children. Consequently, parental permission, authority and decision-making are integral aspects of parental attitudes towards their children in

Joint action with human versus robot partners across psychological domains: a systematic review.

When they act together, people engage a myriad of cognitive and social processes which are increasingly investigated in various areas of psychological and neuroscientific research. The study of human-robot joint action holds promises not only in terms of applying findings to robotics but also providing innovative methodologies that can help disentangle the determinants of human-human joint action. But, how does acting jointly with a robot compare to co-acting with a human? Research investigating this question is sparse and an overview of relevant findings is missing. Therefore, this paper prov

Social mindfulness is associated with reduced self-bias: A computational approach.

An established literature has demonstrated the benefits that personal possession exerts on decision-making. Compared to items owned by others, objects belonging to the self are identified more rapidly and accurately, a phenomenon termed self-prioritization. What is not yet understood, however, is the extent to which individual differences are linked to the emergence of these facilitatory effects. Addressing this issue, here we considered whether social mindfulness - a psychological construct that captures how attuned people are to others - influences self-prioritization. Using an object-classi

Exploring the reasons behind induced abortion among Iranian couples: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Induced abortion remains a significant reproductive health issue in Iran, shaped by complex socio-economic, cultural and legal factors. Despite its importance, limited evidence exists on the underlying motivations for seeking abortion in a context of restrictive laws and pronatalist policies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the reasons underlying couples' decisions to seek induced abortion within the constraints of the current legal framework. DESIGN: Qualitative interview study, co-designed with couples with a history of induced abortion. METHODS: We conducted semi-stru

Exploring influences on infant-feeding decisions among mothers with learning disabilities: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: During the transition to motherhood, women need to make decisions about infant-feeding. For women with learning disabilities, making such decisions is impacted by their capacity to interpret information. Understanding the influences on infant-feeding decisions can improve support for mothers with learning disabilities. AIM: Our review explores broad intersecting influences, including autonomy, formal and informal support systems, and information delivery, by synthesising both peer-reviewed and grey literature. It aimed to understand these aspects in relation to infant-feeding deci

Mind-Wandering Enhances Learning under Uncertainty: Insights from Iowa Gambling Task.

Mind-wandering refers to the shift of attention towards task-unrelated thoughts. The current study aims to explore the impact of mind-wandering on learning and decision-making under uncertain circumstances. This study investigated the interplay of trait (spontaneous and deliberate) and state mind-wandering on learning and decision making using the Iowa Gambling Task. Intermittent thought probes were used to measure state mind wandering, and a standardised 8-item mind-wandering questionnaire was used to measure trait mind wandering. Results revealed that participants demonstrated enhanced learn

A framework to integrate equity in public health emergency response dashboards: Dashboard instrument to review equity (DIRE).

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 created an urgent element of clinical and financial strain to the public health system, forcing it into rapid response mode. Key public health decisions were quickly made, with limited data and guidance to address decision trade-offs and community inequities. Gaps identified in the pandemic confirmed the need for a new tool, like this study's Dashboard Instrument to Review Equity (DIRE) Framework, to ensure decision-makers are given quick and equitable decision-making guidance. STUDY DESIGN: Scoping review and tool development. METHODS: The scoping review was conducted t

Subclinically Depressed Individuals Showed Less Trust after a Night of Sleep Deprivation.

Insufficient sleep's impact on cognitive and emotional function is well-documented, but its effects on social functioning remain understudied. This research investigates the influence of depressive symptoms on the relationship between sleep deprivation (SD) and social decision-making. Forty-two young adults were randomly assigned to either the SD or sleep control (SC) group. The SD group stayed awake in the laboratory, while the SC group had a normal night's sleep at home. During the subsequent morning, participants completed a Trust Game (TG) in which a higher monetary offer distributed by th

"Cool" and "Hot" executive functions in deaf children: the executive brain battery (EBB).

Although previous studies have suggested that language deprivation may affect the development of executive functions (EFs), there are no assessment tools adapted to the language needs of deaf-and-hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. The present study had two objectives: (1) to examine the feasibility of the Executive Brain Battery in assessing 40 prelingually deaf-and-hard-of-hearing children between 6 and 12 years, and (2) to explore whether some sociodemographic and clinical variables could be associated with the performance of deaf children. The results showed that all tasks included in the Exec
