Reframing distress in oncology: the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychological and existential distress are common across the cancer trajectory and can impair quality of life, treatment adherence, and family functioning. Although psychosocial and pharmacological interventions provide meaningful support, their overall effects are often modest. This review examines the emerging role of psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) as a potential approach to better address the multidimensional nature of cancer-related distress. RECENT FINDINGS: PAT combines psychedelic compounds with structured psychotherapeutic support and typically includes preparat

Resilience in young people living with HIV in low to middle-income countries: a critical review.

HIV continues to be a significant global health issue, with 39 million people living with HIV in 2022, including 1.3 million new infections. Of those, 27% were young people aged 15-24, highlighting the vulnerability of this demographic. Despite advances in HIV prevention and treatment, particularly with antiretroviral therapy (ART), low to middle-income countries (LMICs) remain disproportionately affected by the epidemic. The identification and promotion of resilience factors is critical to both decreasing infections and enhancing coping mechanisms for those young people living with HIV (YPLHI

Working-age patients with medically unexplained oral symptoms who receive public assistance in Japan.

Medically unexplained oral symptoms (MUOS) are frequently associated with psychosocial factors. Although most affected individuals can maintain their usual daily activities, a small subset experience pronounced socioeconomic hardship, and the prevalence and characteristics remain unclear in working-age Japanese public assistance recipients. This retrospective chart review examined 3685 first-visit patients at a tertiary psychosomatic dentistry clinic between April 2016 and March 2023. Of these, 98 (2.7%) received public assistance, and 55 (1.5% of the total sample) were aged 18-64 years. Demog

Psychosocial Factors Linked to Online Gaming: Differences Between Current Gamers, Non-current Gamers and Non-gamers.

The rise of gaming and gaming-related problems has led to an interest in finding differences between gamers and non-gamers. The present study investigates whether there are differences in psychological variables (prosociality, emotional intelligence, social support, and mental health) between current gamers, non-current gamers, and non-gamers. For this purpose, a quantitative study was conducted with a convenience sample of Spanish university students (N = 798, Meanage = 21.48, SDage = 5.01). One-way ANOVAs and MANOVAs were performed to compare the psychological variables between the three gro

Unveiling lives: A glimpse into the daily routines of individuals affected by leprosy in Malaysia using the walk-and-talk technique.

Leprosy, though curable, continues to present physical and psychosocial challenges for those affected. This study explored how individuals affected by leprosy in Malaysia navigated daily life, societal expectations, and personal challenges through the walk-and-talk technique, a participant-led qualitative approach that fostered spontaneous storytelling and reflexivity. By guiding researchers through their environments, participants shaped the narrative, shifting power dynamics and enabling authentic dialogue. Six participants from Kelantan and Selangor shared their everyday activities, aspirat

Combat-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Comorbid Major Depression in U.S. Veterans: The Role of Deployment Cycle Adversity and Social Support.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) commonly co-occur in combat veterans, and this comorbidity has been associated with higher levels of distress and more social and economic costs compared to one disorder alone. In a secondary analysis of a multisite randomized controlled trial of a sample of veterans with combat-related PTSD, we examined the associations among pre-, peri-, and postdeployment adversity, social support, and clinician-diagnosed comorbid MDD. Participants completed the Deployment Risk and Resilience Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory
