Adherence to psychiatric medications: Comparing patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression.

Findings of three articles reporting results in 1372 stabilized outpatients taking 2454 medications in Spain, Argentina, and Venezuela were combined. Prevalence of good adherence was not obviously different across diagnoses: 69.5% (N=212) for schizophrenia, 66.3% (N=142) for bipolar disorder, and 69.8% (N=521) for depression. Besides the focus on stabilized outpatients, other study biases included use of a research sample; limited to oral medications, ignoring long-acting injectable antipsychotics; and lack of data on active substance abuse, clinical severity, and insight. Logistic regression

This effect is greater in the people, who are the most violated in their rights. In relation to the social crisis and gender perspective, women are particularly affected by the pandemic. Given the disadvantaged situation of women socially, economically, and politically, their self-care is diminished. OBJECTIVE: To identify whether there is an association between the classic risk factors for prematurity and fetal gro

Pain Catastrophizing Mediates the Association Between Mindfulness and Psychological Distress in Chronic Pain Syndrome.

AIM: Trait mindfulness has been found to be inversely associated with emotional distress such as depression and anxiety among patients suffering from pain. The current study investigated the putative mechanisms underlying these associations by examining whether pain catastrophizing mediates the association between mindfulness and psychological distress and whether this model differs in patients suffering from chronic pain compared to patients experiencing nonchronic pain in a medical rehabilitation setting. METHODS: Forty-eight patients in their subacute stage of recovery participated in the

Family-Based Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa Symptoms in High-Risk Youth: A Partially-Randomized Preference-Design Study.

UNLABELLED: This pilot study adapted family-based treatment (FBT) for youth with potentially prodromal anorexia nervosa (AN). Fifty-nine youth with clinically significant AN symptom constellations, but who never met full Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text rev.) (DSM-IV) criteria for AN, were enrolled in a partially randomized preference design study. Participants were offered randomization to FBT or supportive psychotherapy (SPT); those who declined to be randomized because of a strong treatment preference were entered into a parallel, non-randomized self-sele

Pilot study of the effectiveness of a Mindful Self-Care and Resiliency program for rural doctors in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: Rural doctors are difficult to recruit and retain. Burnout and stress in the medical workforce fluctuates according to location. Overall, doctors have an elevated risk of depression and suicide compared to the general population and other professionals. Higher levels of occupational stress also effect patient care, levels of work satisfaction and relationships with others. This study evaluated the effectiveness, acceptability, feasibility and sustainability of the Mindful Self-Care and Resiliency Program. DESIGN: This was a sequential mixed-method study involving the collection of

What does real-world walking mean to people with stroke? An interpretive descriptive study.

PURPOSE: Understanding personal experiences of real-world walking for stroke survivors could assist clinicians to tailor interventions to their clients' specific needs. We explored the research questions: "What does real-world walking mean to people after stroke and how do they think it can be better?" METHOD: Using an Interpretive Descriptive methodology, we purposively sampled eight stroke survivors who reported difficulty walking in the real-world. We sought diversity on key participant characteristics. Participants were interviewed using a semi-structured guide. Data were analysed with th

Static mechanical allodynia in post-surgical neuropathic pain after breast cancer treatments.

Objectives Static mechanical allodynia (SMA), i. e., pain caused by normally non-painful static pressure, is a prevalent manifestation of neuropathic pain (NP). Although SMA may significantly affect the patient's daily life, it is less well studied in the clinical context. We aimed to characterize SMA in women with chronic post-surgical NP (CPSNP) after breast cancer surgery. Our objective was to improve understanding of the clinical picture of this prevalent pain condition. This is a substudy of a previously published larger cohort of patients with intercostobrachial nerve injury after breast

Subjective cognitive functioning and associations with psychological distress in adult brain tumour survivors.

PURPOSE: The impact of brain tumour on subjective cognitive function (SCF) has received little attention despite the implications of these perceptions for quality of life. SCF consists of two related yet distinct components, perceived cognitive impairment (PCI) and perceived cognitive abilities (PCA). This study compared the SCF of adult brain tumour survivors and healthy controls and examined demographic, illness-related, and psychological factors associated with SCF. METHOD: Sixty-five adult survivors with primary brain tumour (age, 22-75 years), and 65 age- and sex-matched controls were re

OSA and CPAP therapy: effect of gender, somnolence, and treatment adherence on health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often has a significant impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) with social and psychological implications. For most OSA patients, a reduction in their HRQoL is due to symptoms such as poor sleep quality, excessive daytime somnolence, and fatigue with differences between gender. PURPOSE: This study explores the CPAP treatment effect on self-perceived HRQoL related to gender, somnolence, and CPAP adherence. METHODS: Out of 1082 consecutive Italian outpatients, 125 (82 M) (60.3 ± 9.6 years) completed the prospective observational study and wer

Condom-use self-efficacy as a mediator between syndemics and condomless sex in men who have sex with men (MSM).

OBJECTIVE: Among men who have sex with men (MSM), HIV sexual risk and poor self-care behavior is associated with syndemics, or co-occurring psychosocial problems. Though prior research has demonstrated an additive total effect of syndemics on HIV risk behavior and infection, mostly within cross-sectional designs, it is possible that these associations are not direct but rather that syndemics disrupt relevant individual-level mediating psychological variables. One of the more common individual-level psychological variables that predicts health behavior generally, and HIV risk behavior specifica
