Ovarian cancer remains the most lethal gynecologic malignancy, a status largely attributable to late-stage diagnosis and inevitable chemoresistance. The cGAS-STING pathway, a cornerstone of innate immune surveillance, has emerged as a critical nexus linking genomic instability to antitumor immunity-a connection of particular relevance in ovarian cancer, where chromosomal instability is a defining hallmark. This review synthesizes current understanding of the cGAS-STING pathway in ovarian cancer, spanning molecular mechanisms to translational opportunities. We delineate the dualistic nature of

Mycobacterium abscessus (Mab) is a rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacterium that causes opportunistic infections and exhibits extensive intrinsic antibiotic resistance. The proline-glutamate (PE) and proline-proline-glutamate (PPE) protein families are mycobacteria-specific virulence factors implicated in immune modulation, antigenic variation, and persistence. While Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) harbors approximately 170 PE/PPE members, the repertoire of PE/PPE genes in Mab remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we performed a genome-wide survey of PE/PPE genes in Mab ATCC 19,977 and

Historically, the main operation for cataract was couching, and the interior of the living eye could not be examined until Hermann von Helmholtz introduced the ophthalmoscope in 1851. Since the mid-twentieth century, seven advances have reshaped ophthalmic care. Harold Ridley implanted the first intraocular lens in 1949, and the ophthalmologist Charles Kelman and the engineer Anton Banko developed phacoemulsification, reported in 1967. Robert Machemer performed the first pars plana vitrectomy in 1970, while David Huang and colleagues described optical coherence tomography in 1991. Endothelial

While genetic heritability plays a major role in the development of cognitive impairment, most genetic risk factors are identified from studies of European populations. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on cognitive impairment in the Chinese population by sequencing 1,040 matched case-control individuals from a longitudinal cohort of Zhejiang Province, China. We detected 19 SNPs clustered in 15 genomic loci reaching suggestive significance (P < 1 × 10- 5). Eleven of these genomic loci are newly associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or cognitive impairment, among which five

Heterozygosity-rich regions (HRR) are genomic segments characterized by high heterozygosity that may arise from admixture, introgression, or balancing selection and may harbor loci associated with adaptation and fitness-related traits. This study aimed to characterize HRR patterns in five Kazakh sheep breeds using a publicly available OvineSNP50 genotyping dataset. After quality control, ~25 000 SNPs were retained for 1634 Akzhaiyk, 1089 Edilbay, 532 Kazakh Fine-Wool, 932 Kazakh Semi-Coarse, and 282 Saryarka sheep. HRR were detected separately in each breed using the sliding-window approach in

The rate at which viral lineages accumulate genetic divergence is central to understanding pathogen evolution, yet direct empirical measurements are limited. The COVID-19 pandemic, through the combination of pandemic-scale replication and dense genomic surveillance, offers an opportunity to calibrate this relationship directly. Unlike previous analyses that use time as the independent variable, this study uses cumulative infections, providing an epidemiological clock calibrated in units of replication opportunity that is not confounded by variation in transmission intensity. A total of 1279 SA

Structural variants (SVs) are large (>50 base pairs) genomic rearrangements that can significantly influence human phenotypes, yet their contribution to health and disease remains undercharacterized. We conducted a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) of 1.6 million SVs identified in whole-genome sequencing data from 467,152 UK Biobank participants, across 13,322 binary, 2,018 quantitative, and 2,923 plasma protein traits. Of these, 82.25% of SVs were outside the detectable range of prior copy-number variant studies. Protein quantitative trait loci analysis linked 3,467 SVs to 1,690 protein

Restoration of the crop improvement-related loss-of-function gene, Solanum lycopersicum GOLDEN2-LIKE, through an additional mutation by a conventional genome editing technique. Plant domestication and crop improvement processes have inadvertently led to the loss of gene functions that contribute to crop quality. In widely cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) varieties, the uniform ripening (u) mutation, a loss-of-function allele of the Solanum lycopersicum Golden2-like 2 (SlGLK2), has been selected to improve fruit appearance. However, this selection is associated with reduced fruit nutrit

Cohesin, a ring-shaped SMC complex, mediates sister-chromatid cohesion, DNA repair, and genome folding via loop extrusion. Pluripotent and somatic cells were thought to rely solely on mitotic cohesin (SMC1A, SMC3, RAD21, STAG1/STAG2), while meiosis-specific subunits (SMC1B, REC8, STAG3) were considered germline-restricted. This notion has been challenged, as transcriptomic, proteomic, and chromatin-based evidence shows REC8 and STAG3 are expressed in embryonic stem cells (ESCs), assemble with core subunits like SMC3, and occupy genomic sites distinct from canonical RAD21-cohesin. Here, we comp

Cardiometabolic diseases are a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality and arise from shared and distinct risk factors acting through interconnected biological pathways. Although excess adiposity is a major risk factor, body mass index incompletely captures cardiometabolic risk, reflecting heterogeneity in overall and regional fat storage capacity and ectopic lipid accumulation. Failure of subcutaneous adipose tissue to expand appropriately promotes lipid overflow into visceral and ectopic depots, contributing to insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and organ dysfunction. Human genetic st

Epistasis, the genetic interaction between loci, has long been recognized as a fundamental feature of the genetic architecture, but its importance remains controversial. This controversy stems partly from the apparent disconnect between abundant physiological epistasis observed in laboratory settings and the rarity of detectable epistatic interactions in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Here, I introduce the concept of epistatic redundancy, whereby a focal locus interacts with multiple alternative loci rather than a single partner. Using population genetic simulations, I demonstrate tha

Accurate modeling of genotype-by-environment (G × E) interaction is a central challenge in plant breeding, as it determines how genetic potential is expressed across heterogeneous and changing environments. In genomic prediction, a widely adopted strategy represents G × E interaction through the Hadamard (element-wise) product of genotype and environment covariance matrices, capturing interaction effects via joint similarity. While effective, this formulation may not fully represent the structured complexity of G × E relationships observed in multi-environment trials. In this study, we extend

Levan, a fructose homopolymer produced by many bacterial genera, particularly Bacillus, offers exceptional physicochemical properties and broad industrial potential. Lichens represent remarkable yet underexplored microhabitats which harbor many bacterial genera. Therefore, lichens may offer a unique opportunity to discover efficient biopolymer producing strains and bioactive compounds. Lichen-associated bacteria TLs4 and TLs25, isolated from Platismatia sp. and Pseudevernia sp., respectively, were cultivated in sucrose-rich medium and their exopolysaccharides were analyzed. Both strains produc

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is an emerging livestock capripoxvirus (CaPV) that continues to cause substantial economic losses across Africa, Asia and Europe. However, important uncertainties remain regarding LSDV genome structure, particularly at the telomeric inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that are central to host interaction, replication and adaptive evolution. Structural variation at the ITRs is driven by recombination during virus replication. Previous assemblies have relied primarily on short-read sequencing, which provides limited resolution of repeat-rich telomeric regions and pro

Influenza A viruses (IAV) pose a persistent pandemic threat. Successful cross-species transmission from waterfowl to mammals requires host adaptation for efficient replication and spread. Avian IAVs are adapted to the temperature of the avian gut, approximately 41°C, while human IAVs replicate at 33°C in the upper respiratory tract. PB1, the catalytic core of the viral heterotrimeric RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), is essential for viral RNA synthesis. Three pandemic IAV strains (1918, 1957, and 1968) carried an avian-origin PB1 gene, suggesting a selective advantage. Fever, a critical an

The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters for diet digestibility in Holsteins and to determine genetic correlations of digestibility with production traits. A total of 1,494 fecal samples were collected in the morning and afternoon from 1,065 lactating cows (1,314 samples) and 178 nulliparous heifers (180 samples) from 5 commercial herds and the Penn State University herd. Fecal and TMR samples were dried in a forced-air oven for 48 h at 55°C and composite fecal samples made from dried morning and afternoon samples on an equal dry-weight basis. The fecal and TMR samples

Avian genomes are typically compact, with limited repetitive content, but the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) represents an exception. Here, we report a near-complete chromosome-level quail genome assembly (1.33 Gb), up to 43% larger than previous quail assemblies. The assembly reveals extensive repeat accumulation and heterochromatin expansion, particularly in the pericentromeric regions of micro- and dot chromosomes, and identifies a conserved centromeric repeat shared across chromosomes. Comparative analyses show that transposable element accumulation reshaped chromatin architecture, his

Metagenomic sequencing allows for detection of any number of pathogenic viruses from a single sample without a priori knowledge of its contents. This has created a substantial opportunity to characterize pathogens in humans and their environment, but the field is held back by a lack of bioinformatics tools for taxonomic profiling and reconstructing virus genomes. The ideal profiler would simultaneously do two things: report viruses at single-read sensitivity so that ultra-low-abundance pathogens are not missed and hold near-perfect specificity so that a pathogen is never falsely reported. Here
