Fascioliasis is a globally distributed parasitic disease caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, transmitted by freshwater snails of the family Lymnaeidae. Although environmental factors influence the distribution of these intermediate hosts, the role of water physicochemical parameters remains underexplored. This study evaluated the relationship between water quality and lymnaeid snail presence in endemic areas of western Argentina. A total of 53 aquatic sites were surveyed, with lymnaeid snails detected in 33 (62.26 %). Water samples were categorized as positive or negative based

In Bhutan, information on rickettsiae is limited to a few epidemiological studies. There is no information on ticks and tick-associated rickettsiae. Ticks were collected opportunistically from domestic animals residing in eight districts where a seroprevalence study had been carried out previously. Morphological identification of the ticks was performed in the United States National Tick Collection and testing for rickettsiae was carried out in the Australian Rickettsial Reference Laboratory. Samples positive for rickettsiae by qPCR were subjected to conventional PCR followed by DNA sequencing

The tick fauna in Cambodia is poorly documented, with limited information on the diversity and distribution of tick species. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap by investigating tick species collected from various hosts, and across different habitats and regions of the country. Tick sampling was conducted in urban areas, rural villages, farms, and forest fringes, with additional samples obtained from a wildlife rescue center, caves, and swiftlet nests. Ticks were collected directly from hosts, as well as on vegetation through flagging methods. Tick species were identified morphologi

Reflecting their tropism for keratinocytes, most poxviruses that infect vertebrates replicate to high titers and cause pathology in the skin. Keratinocytes, the main cells of the epidermis, are found in different stages of a differentiation program that produces the critical barrier against environmental damage. While systemic poxviruses (e.g. smallpox virus, sheeppox virus) also infect other cell types, the parapoxvirus orf virus (ORFV), which causes localized infections in sheep and goats, has not been shown to replicate in cells other than keratinocytes. Notably, ORFV infection only occurs

PURPOSE: Although the mechanisms underlying glaucomatous neurodegeneration are not yet well understood, cellular and small animal models suggest that LC astrocytes undergo early morphologic and functional changes, indicating their role as early responders to glaucomatous stress. These models, however, lack the LC found in larger animals and humans, leaving the in situ morphology of LC astrocytes and their role in glaucoma initiation underexplored. In this work, we aimed to characterize the morphology of LC astrocytes in situ and determine differences and similarities with astrocytes in the mou

In this study, a total of 32 Trueperella pyogenes strains isolated from different disease specimens in cattle, sheep and goats were examined. Antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates to 10 antimicrobials were determined using the E-test method and MIC values of the antimicrobials were investigated. The genes that play a role in the antimicrobial resistance or virulence of T. pyogenes were determined by PCR using gene specific primers. In the study, all the isolates were susceptible to penicillin and cephalosporin. The highest resistance rate in the isolates was determined against streptomy

AIMS: Coxiella burnetii is a highly infectious organism that is easily spread through aerosols causing Q fever in humans. Ticks can harbour and transmit C. burnetii to animals, contributing to disease maintenance. Our aim was to examine the presence of C. burnetii in ticks in Uganda.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, ticks were collected from five Ugandan districts and tested by real-time PCR for C. burnetii (Coxiella outer membrane protein 1 gene). A total of 859 tick pools (9602 individual ticks) were tested, and pool positivity for C. burnetii was 5.5% (n = 47). Pooled prevalence differe

KEY CLINICAL MASSAGE: A 23-year-old rancher was admitted with the diagnosis of brucellosis. In evaluations, a massive vegetation in the aortic valve was seen. A combination of antibiotic therapy and cardiac surgery were performed, it seems this approach reduces mortality and complications.
ABSTRACT: Brucellosis (also known as "undulant fever," "Mediterranean fever," or "Malta fever") is a zoonotic infection transmitted to humans from infected animals (cattle, sheep, goats, camels, pigs, or other animals) by ingestion of food products (such as unpasteurized dairy products) or by contact with t

BACKGROUND: Ecthyma contagiosum, sometimes referred to as human orf, is a zoonotic disease caused by the orf virus that is mostly acquired by coming into contact with diseased animals such as sheep or goats. The orf virus, a DNA virus belonging to the Poxviridae family, infects epidermal keratinocytes via breaking down the skin barrier, which can be caused by burns or wounds. The accompanying characteristic skin lesions can take on a range of morphologies depending on the infection's stage; lesions that are crusted, papillomatous, maculopapular, targetoid, and nodular can occur before clearing

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an obligate intracellular parasite that can infect almost all warm-blooded animals, including humans, and one-third of the global population is thought to be infected with this parasite. Infection can occur through consumption of contaminated food, contact with an infected host, or congenital transmission. While toxoplasmosis is asemptomatic in people with a healthy immune system, it can cause severe infections in people with a suppressed immune system or with immunodeficiency. In addition to causing diseases in humans, it also causes infections in livestock an

Damage to Sertoli cell junction proteins caused by inflammation can lead to male infertility. Nerve growth factor (NGF) plays an important role in reproductive and inflammatory disease; however, whether and how NGF regulates Sertoli cell function remains unclear. Here, we aimed to assess the effect of NGF on the growth of Sertoli cells isolated from the testes of dairy goats and evaluate if NGF has a protective effect on these cells. We confirmed that Sertoli cell viability, proliferation, and ATP content increased following NGF treatment. In addition, qPCR results suggested that Sertoli cell

The Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii is the causative organism of the zoonosis Q fever and is known for its resistance toward various intra- and extracellular stressors. Infected ruminants such as cattle, sheep, and goats can shed the pathogen in their milk. Pasteurization of raw milk was introduced for the inactivation of C. burnetii and other milk-borne pathogens. Legal regulations for the pasteurization of milk are mostly based on recommendations of the Codex Alimentarius. As described there, C. burnetii is considered as the most heat-resistant non-spore-for

OBJECTIVE: The optimal timing of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) could allow earlier tooth movements across alveolar bone defects while minimizing the adverse effects. The objective of this scoping systematic review was therefore designed to review pre-clinical animal studies on the ideal protocol for the timing of orthodontic traction across alveolar defects augmented with synthetic scaffolds.
DESIGN: Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, three electronic databases were searched (Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science).
RESULTS: A total of twelve studies were included in the final review that re

OBJECTIVE: We describe the composition and variation of women's resource strategies in an arid-living Southern African agro-pastoralist society to gain insights into adaptation to climate-change-induced increased aridity.
METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from 210 women collected in 2009 across 28 agro-pastoralist villages in Kaokoveld Namibia, we conducted principal-component (PC) analysis of resource variables and constructed profiles of resource strategies from the major PCs. Next, we explored associations between key resource strategies and demographic measures and fitness proxies.

Anaplasma species are tick-borne pathogens that are obligatory intracellular of ruminants and other mammalians. In this investigation, we systematically reviewed the distribution of anaplasmosis among domestic ruminants in Iran. Five and four English and Persian databases were studied, respectively, based on keywords and throughout 17 years (2001-2017). Thirty-eight articles were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Totally, 5093 cattle, 1958 sheep, and 1232 goats corresponding to prevalence of Anaplasma infection from different areas of Iran were examined. The total prevalenc

BACKGROUND: ZFHX3, a multifunctional transcription factor, plays pivotal roles in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, including neuronal differentiation, development, atrial fibrillation, and cancer. Notably, homozygous deletion of Zfhx3 is embryonic lethal, whereas its hemizygous deletion results in reduced neonatal body weight and increased preweaning mortality in mice. Also, a deletion mutation in Zfhx3 is significantly associated with reduced litter size, a key reproduction-related trait in goats, suggesting that ZFHX3 is involved in reproductive development. However, it

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis caused by cestodes of Echinococcus granulosus (sensu lato) complex. In Nigeria, reports on the prevalence of CE, although limited, have been found to vary with location and host with higher prevalence and fertility rate observed in camels than other livestock. Until now, information regarding the molecular characteristics, genetic population structure, and genotypes of Echinococcus is lacking. Therefore, this study was aimed at addressing these gaps in knowledge.
METHODS: We describe the genetic status of 31 Echinococcus isolates collected
