Biochemical indices of nutritional status in maternal, cord, and early neonatal blood.

The nutritional status of 556 infants born in good health was measured by selected biochemical parameters in maternal venous blood, in mixed arteriovenous cord blood at delivery, and in infant's capillary blood collected at 5 days. The determinations indicating nutritional status were: Hb, hematocrit, protein, cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamins A, C, E, and folic acid, iron, calcium and magnesium. In maternal venous blood, a significant number of women were found to be deficient; 3.4% had Hb below 9.5 g/dl; 6.1% had hematocrit less than 30%; 4.0% had total protein below 5.5 g/dl; 7.0% had vi

Development and validation of a community-level social determinants of health index for drug overdose deaths in the HEALing Communities Study.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDoH), such as socioeconomic status, education level, and food insecurity, are believed to influence the opioid crisis. While global SDoH indices such as the CDC's Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) and Area Deprivation Index (ADI) combine the explanatory power of multiple social factors for understanding health outcomes, they may be less applicable to the specific challenges of opioid misuse and associated outcomes. This study develops a novel index tailored to opioid misuse outcomes, tests the efficacy of this index in predicting drug overdose death

Concurrent and prospective associations between fitbit wearable-derived RDoC arousal and regulatory constructs and adolescent internalizing symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is characterized by alterations in biobehavioral functioning, during which individuals are at heightened risk for onset of psychopathology, particularly internalizing disorders. Researchers have proposed using digital technologies to index daily biobehavioral functioning, yet there is a dearth of research examining how wearable metrics are associated with mental health. METHODS: We preregistered analyses using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study dataset using wearable data collection in 5,686 adolescents (123,862 person-days or 2,972,688 person-hours) to d

Early continuous glucose monitoring-derived glycemic patterns are associated with subsequent insulin resistance and gestational diabetes mellitus development during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and insulin resistance (IR) increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. We aimed to examine the relationship of interstitial glucose assessed by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) at early gestation, and the subsequent development of IR and GDM, and to determine 24-h interstitial glucose centile distributions in women with normal (non-IR and non-GDM) and suboptimal glycemic status (IR and/or GDM). METHODS: CGM measurements were taken for 3-10 days at 18-24 weeks' gestation, followed by fasting serum insulin and oral glucose tolerance testi

Cigarette Smoking Associated with Colorectal Cancer Survival: A Nationwide, Population-Based Cohort Study.

We investigate whether cigarette smoking is associated with survival in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) through a nationwide population-based cohort study in Taiwan. The Taiwan Cancer Registry and National Health Insurance Research Database were used to identify data from patients with CRC from 2011 to 2017. Tobacco use was evaluated based on the smoking status, intensity, and duration before cancer diagnosis. A total of 18,816 patients was included. A Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicated smoking to be significantly associated with the CRC mortality risk (log-rank p = 0.0001). A mult

Adherence to combined healthy lifestyle and odds of metabolic syndrome in Iranian adults: the PERSIAN Dena cohort study.

The relationship between lifestyle choices and health outcomes has received significant scholarly attention. Research indicates that factors such as obesity, insufficient physical activity, tobacco use, and poor dietary habits may elevate the odds of developing metabolic disorders. This study aimed to investigate the association between the combined healthy lifestyle score (HLS) and the odds of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its associated components in a population of apparently healthy adults. This cross-sectional study utilized data from the Dena PERSIAN cohort, which comprised 2,971 healthy

Age and Race Disparities in Viral Suppression and the Moderating Effect of Substance Use Among Men Who Have Sex with Men Living with HIV.

Viral suppression is essential for individuals living with HIV, as it is linked to improved clinical outcomes and long-term health. Research has documented age and racial disparities in HIV viral suppression. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are particularly affected by HIV infections, especially in the Southern United States. Studies indicate that substance use among people with HIV in the U.S. presents significant barriers to engaging in HIV care. This study investigated the relationships between age, race, MSM status, and viral suppression among men living with HIV (MLWH), who participated i
