Clinical and electrocardiographic characterization of cattle with atrial premature complexes.

Atrial premature complexes (APC) were identified in 16 cows over a 2-year period. Fourteen cows had concurrent gastrointestinal disease. Variation in the intensity of the first heart sound and an occasionally irregular heart rhythm were evident during thoracic auscultation. Neither cardiac murmurs nor pulse deficits were detected in any cows, and clinical signs of heart failure were lacking. Three cows had APC immediately prior to or after development of atrial fibrillation. The heart rate when APC were diagnosed ranged from 48 to 124 beats/min (mean, 77 +/- 20 beats/min), and the APC frequenc

[Congenital hypoplastic left ventricle--a case report].

A case of congenital hypoplasia of left heart ventricle is presented with regard to its clinical and pathophysiological aspects. A detailed prenatal ultrasonic or echocardiographic diagnosis seems to be absolutely necessary. Each sonographer should at least be able to advise of any suspicion of fetal heart abnormalities.

The teratogenic effect of phenobarbital on the embryonic chick heart.

Phenobarbital was observed to produce cardiovascular malformations in embryonic chicks. Malformations included simple ventricular septal defect, ventricular septal defect associated with dextroposition of the aorta, double outlet right ventricle, and several types of aortic arch anomalies. Embryos were exposed to phenobarbital at doses of 1-25 mumol on day 4 of incubation (Hamburger-Hamilton developmental stage 24). Doses equal to and greater than 5 mumol phenobarbital (26 mg/kg egg) significantly increased the frequency of embryos with cardiovascular malformations compared with lesser doses a

New index of cardiac contractility during stress testing with treadmill.

Experimental demonstration that the external phonocardiogram is similar to the third derivative (rate of acceleration) of LV pressure, and that catecholamines cause a similar increase of the early systolic wave of the first derivative of LV pressure and of S1 prompted a study of the first sound during stress testing. Following a previous study with different types of ergometers, the present investigation was based on records of 10 normal, young volunteers, taken during treadmill exercise while a phonocardiogram was recorded at the apex. The first heart sound increased in all of them averaging

Ambulatory electrocardiographic recording in mild or moderate myotonic dystrophy and myotonia congenita (Thomsen's disease).

Ambulatory electrocardiographic recording (AER) was performed on 27 adult patients with mild or moderate myotonic dystrophy (MD) and in 12 adult patients with mild myotonia congenita (MC) to determine whether characteristic arrhythmias and conduction disturbances occur in the early stages of these myotonic disorders. In MD and MC, AER showed at least one finding regarded as normal in 93% and 0% of cases, respectively. The most common abnormalities in MD were first degree atrioventricular (A-V) block (in 70% of cases) and QTc greater than or equal to 0.46 s (in 33%). Abnormal sinus intervals an

Review article. Congenital complete heart block.

Isolated congenital complete heart block has a heterogenous aetiology. In approximately one-third of the patients in the present material the mothers had symptoms or signs of connective tissue disease. The mortality is highest in the neonatal period, much lower during childhood and adolescence and increases slowly later in life. There are elderly patients who are completely asymptomatic but patients are also encountered with signs and symptoms of more or less severe myocardial damage. Stokes-Adams attacks may occur at any age. About 10% of patients below 15 years of age in this material and ab

Sick sinus syndrome in childhood.

The clinical and electrocardiographic findings in five children with the sick sinus syndrome and an otherwise normal heart are described. There were three boys and two girls. Their age at onset of either bradycardia or symptoms ranged from 1 day to 7 years. In one patient, the youngest ever reported with this syndrome, bradycardia was noted before birth. Four children presented with neurological symptoms--attacks of dizziness, fainting spells, or syncope. One boy, treated for epilepsy before the underlying arrhythmia ws diagnosed, died suddenly while playing. One child had near-fatal syncope c

Effect of the autonomic blockade on the automaticity of the A-V junctional pacemaker in awake dogs.

The effect of the autonomic blockade on the automaticity of the A-V junctional pacemaker was evaluated in 15 awake dogs with experimentally induced A-V junctional rhythm. The duration of asystole after overdrive (D.A.O.) in these dogs was prolonged significantly in accordance with increase in the drive rate, and the mean +/- SD of the D.A.O. reached 4.7 +/- 1.1 seconds (N = 15) after overdrive at 2.5 times the spontaneous heart rate. After administration of atropine (0.4 mg/kg; i.v.) to eight dogs, the mean +/- SD of the D.A.O. at the same rate decreased from 4.5 +/- 0.9 to 3.4 +/- 1.2 seconds

The effect of propranolol upon chick embryo cardiogenesis.

The teratogenic effects of propranolol HCl on cardiac development were studied in chick embryos of days 3 and 4 of incubation. Propranolol was injected into the yolk sac at doses ranging from 0.05 to 0.6 mg per egg. All the treated and control embryos were examined on day 7. The LD50 for the embryos treated on the 3rd and 4th day was 0.15 and 0.35 mg per embryo, respectively. Cardiac anomalies such as aortic stenosis ventricular septal defects and common truncus arteriosus were observed. Other malformations included atrial septal defects, thin atrial wall and defects of the pulmonic, aortic an

Effect of propranolol on left ventricular function, segmental wall motion, and diastolic pressure-volume relation in man.

Precise quantitation of the effects of the non-selective beta adrenergic blocking drug propranolol (3.15 mg/kg body weight) on left ventricular function, segmental wall motion, and diastolic pressure-volume relation in man has been performed. High fidelity left ventricular pressure measurements and simultaneous single-plane angiocardiograms were recorded on a video disc and volumes calculated by a light-pen computer system. Systolic segmental wall motion was computer analysed using the long axis-quadrasection method. Patients were transvenously atrially paced to maintain a constant heart rate.

Clinical applications of the threshold tracking pacemaker.

The concept of automatic threshold tracking is the most recent adaptation of artificial cardiac pacemakers to physiologic needs. Earlier pacemaker innovations were primarily in the area of timing of impulse delivery, whereas more recent changes have focused on alteration of the amplitude and duration of the pacemaker stimulus. Matching of this stimulus to the cardiac excitation threshold is important because a stimulus greater than necessary is wasteful of battery energy and may produce arrhythmias, whereas a stimulus of less than threshold intensity fails to pace the heart. Because of the wid

Pet-induced stress buffering depends on touch: Evidence from brain and cardiac measures.

While there is much evidence for the wellbeing benefits of pet-ownership, the mechanisms through which these benefits emerge have been left uncertain. Here, we pursued the possibility that friendly physical contact with one's pet dampens stress and furthers homeostasis. Sixty-four pet owners visited our lab with their dog. They completed two experimental blocks each comprised of a resting baseline, a stress-inducing cognitive task, and a recovery period. The dog was present only during recovery, with physical contact being possible during one block but not the other. Relative to rest, the cogn

The role of mindfulness in attenuating the adverse effects of daily negative events: An experience sampling study.

Mindfulness is robustly associated with psychological and physiological well-being. To date, studies have primarily focused on trait mindfulness while neglecting its state-level momentary regulatory effects on daily stress. This preregistered study investigated the effects of state mindfulness on participants' momentary mood and physiological arousal in cohorts sampled between 2021 and 2024. Using the experience sampling method, 100 cohabiting couples (N = 200) completed five daily surveys for 16 days, and reported on their experiences of stressors (adverse events), state mindfulness levels, p

The effect of self-compassion versus mindfulness interventions on autonomic responses to stress in generalized anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Although research on psychological interventions in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has provided evidence of their effectiveness regarding self-reported outcomes, few studies have examined their psychophysiological effects. Heart rate is emerging as a potential biomarker of efficacy in anxiety disorders. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a self-compassion intervention versus a mindfulness intervention on physiological arousal in response to induced stress. METHODS: Forty-seven patients with GAD had heart rate data collected during a stress task before and after a 2-

Cerebellar Asymmetry of Motivational Direction: Anger-Dependent Effects of Cerebellar Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Aggression in Healthy Volunteers.

It has recently been theorized that the frontal asymmetry of approach- and avoidance-related motivation is mirrored in the posterolateral cerebellum. Accordingly, left-to-right dominant cerebellar activity is associated with avoidance-related motivation, whereas right-to-left dominant cerebellar activity is associated with approach-related motivation. The aim of this study was to examine the cerebellar asymmetry of motivational direction in approach-related behavior in the context of aggression. In this randomized double-blind sham-controlled crossover study, thirty healthy right-handed adult
