Clinical efficacy and biomechanical analysis of robotic internal fixation with percutaneous screws in the treatment of both-column acetabular fractures.

Both-column fractures of the acetabulum represent a particularly complex category of injury, with a high proportion necessitating surgical intervention. The most common surgical method is open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), but this has problems like blood loss, long operations, and trauma after surgery. Robot-assisted percutaneous screw fixation is a minimally invasive treatment for both-column acetabular fractures. It has several clinical advantages, including precise screw positioning and stable performance. A comparison of the clinical efficacy of open reduction and internal fixat

Collection and Reporting of Patient-reported Outcome Measures in Arthroplasty Registries: Multinational Survey and Recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are validated questionnaires that are completed by patients. Arthroplasty registries vary in PROM collection and use. Current information about registry collection and use of PROMs is important to help improve methods of PROM data analysis, reporting, comparison, and use toward improving clinical practice. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: To characterize PROM collection and use by registries, we asked: (1) What is the current practice of PROM collection by arthroplasty registries that are current or former members of the International Society of Arthro

Patients With Mild Osteoarthritis Are Less Likely to Achieve a Clinically Important Improvement in Pain or Function After Anatomic Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The severity of glenohumeral osteoarthritis (OA) as demonstrated by preoperative radiographs and patient-reported pain plays an important role in the indication for anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA). In hip and knee research, data about the effect of the severity of preoperative radiographic OA on the outcome of total joint arthroplasty have been mixed. For shoulder replacement, we are unsure of the effects of radiographic severity on outcomes. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This study investigated whether the preoperative radiographic severity of glenohumeral OA is associated with

Mortality and morbidity of members of the British Nuclear Tests Veterans Association and the New Zealand Nuclear Tests Veterans Association and their families.

More than 20,000 British servicemen--many of them on their National Service, few of them volunteering for the tests, and most in their early twenties, some still boy soldiers in their teens--were required to 'participate' in the United Kingdom nuclear tests in Australia and Christmas Island in the 1950s and 1960s. 528 members of the New Zealand Navy were also present for one series of tests. There was also a Fijian Army contingent, which has been variously numbered between 100 and 500 men. An estimated 16,000 Australian servicemen and civilians were also involved in the tests at Maralinga and

Topical tranexamic Acid does not affect electrophysiologic or neurovascular sciatic nerve markers in an animal model.

BACKGROUND: Tranexamic acid is a safe and effective antifibrinolytic agent used systemically and topically to reduce blood loss and transfusion rate in patients having TKA or THA. As the hip does not have a defined capsule, topical application of tranexamic acid may entirely envelop the sciatic nerve during THA. Accidental application of tranexamic acid onto the spinal cord in spinal anesthesia has been shown to produce seizures; therefore, we sought to investigate if topical application of tranexamic acid on the sciatic nerve has a deleterious effect. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We explored whether

Critical review of tomography in radiology and nuclear medicine.

This review covers conventional radiographic tomography, radioisotopic tomography, and a review of computerized transaxial tomography. Simple, reproducible radiographic tomographic methods are increasing in use, and despite their complexity, the diagnostic results are superior to conventional radiographs. There are many different motions of the X-ray tube and the film which can be employed to create a tomogram. The perfect tomographic motion is partly determined by the geometric shape of the object to be imaged and the thickness of the plane of interest. The undirectional tomographic method bl

How Much Perioperative Pain and Dysfunction Underlie the HOOS JR and KOOS JR?

BACKGROUND: The Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Joint Replacement (HOOS JR) and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Joint Replacement (KOOS JR) scores represent pain and dysfunction as a single number ranging from 0 (extreme pain and dysfunction) to 100 (no pain or functional limitations). However, scores between 0 and 100 lack a simple interpretation because they reflect varying combinations of pain levels and dysfunction. Given that most adverse events and improvement occur within the first 90 days after surgery, a deeper understanding of the level of pain and dysfun

Are the Pathologic Features of Enthesopathy, Tendinopathy, and Labral and Articular Disc Disease Related to Mucoid Degeneration? A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Tendinopathy, enthesopathy, labral degeneration, and pathologic conditions of the articular disc (knee meniscus and ulnocarpal) are sometimes described in terms of inflammation or damage, while the histopathologic findings are often consistent with mucoid degeneration. A systematic review of the histopathology of these structures at diverse locations might reconceptualize these diseases as expected aspects of human aging. The potential benefits of this evolution might include healthier patient and clinician mindsets as well as a reduced likelihood of overdiagnosis and overtreatment

Does the Watson-Jones or Modified Smith-Petersen Approach Provide Superior Exposure for Femoral Neck Fracture Fixation?

BACKGROUND: A well-reduced femoral neck fracture is more likely to heal than a poorly reduced one, and increasing the quality of the surgical exposure makes it easier to achieve anatomic fracture reduction. Two open approaches are in common use for femoral neck fractures, the modified Smith-Petersen and Watson-Jones; however, to our knowledge, the quality of exposure of the femoral neck exposure provided by each approach has not been investigated. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What is the respective area of exposed femoral neck afforded by the Watson-Jones and modified Smith-Petersen approaches? (2

Efficacy and safety of platelet-rich plasma injections for the treatment of osteoarthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for osteoarthritis (OA) have been widely promoted in clinical practice, but their effectiveness is controversial. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis of relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to determine the efficacy and safety of PRP injections for the treatment of OA. METHODS: We searched databases including Embase, Web of Science, Medline, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library for relevant studies. Two researchers (YQX and CG) performed literature screening, baseline data extraction, literature quality assessment, and
