Factors associated with placement along the HIV prevention and care continuum among sexual minority men who use methamphetamine.

Methamphetamine use among sexual minority men (SMM) has been associated with poor ART adherence, and reduced initiation and adherence to PrEP. From May 2021 to May 2023, 226 SMM were enrolled in Getting Off, a culturally responsive smartphone application to reduce methamphetamine use and improve sexual health. Using a status-neutral approach, an ordinal variable reflected participants' placement on the HIV Prevention/Care Continuum, from HIV-positive, not taking ART, to HIV-negative, currently taking PrEP. An ordinal logistic model was structured to identify factors associated with participant

Prevalent and incident hepatitis C virus infections among participants in a pre-exposure prophylaxis program in Taiwan.

To better understand the burden of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) in Taiwan, we conducted a prospective surveillance study of HCV viremia and bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among users of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV. Between 2018 and 2024, a total of 603 individuals participated in the national PrEP program. The baseline HCV seroprevalence was 1.2%, and no incident cases of HCV viremia were observed among the 364 participants enrolled in this surveillance study with 311.58 person-years of follow-up, giving the

Acceptability of broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) for HIV prevention among vulnerable populations in India: Findings from a qualitative study.

With newer advances in HIV biomedical research, the prevention toolbox is expanding with potential inclusion of long-acting anti-retrovirals, broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs), and vaccines. While a multitude of prevention options provide diverse choice sets, they may potentially introduce conundrums and trade-offs which influence end-user decisions on acceptability. Thus, to maximize the unique value and uptake of new products, it is critical to understand contextual drivers of choice and relative product positioning. With HIV bNAbs in the pipeline, a qualitative study was conducted to

Randomized Controlled Trial Testing an HIV/STI Prevention Intervention Among People Leaving Incarceration Who Were Assigned Male at Birth, Have Sex with Men and A Substance Use Disorder.

HIV disproportionately impacts minoritized individuals, particularly those of intersectional minoritized identities. Incarceration disproportionately impacts minoritized individuals as well, and increases HIV risk, in part due to its disruption to people's lives, social networks, and access to care. We developed MEPS, a 6-month intervention designed to holistically support HIV prevention in men who have sex with men and transgender women leaving incarceration. We tested MEPS in a 1:1 randomized controlled trial with 208 individuals. All participants received a needs assessment and personalized

Development of the chemsex assessment for referral and evaluation (CARE) with preliminary psychometric properties: A screening tool for referral needs in community settings.

BACKGROUND: Chemsex, the use of substances to enhance or prolong sexual experiences before or during sex, is an important public health issue among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). To address the lack of tailored screening tools, this study developed the Chemsex Assessment for Referral and Evaluation (CARE) to identify gbMSM who may benefit from specialised care. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey for gbMSM who engaged in chemsex in the past year was conducted in Taiwan. Exploratory factor analysis and Rasch analysis assessed the 18 dichotomous CARE items; Kud

Preferences for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among men who have sex with men and trans women in 15 countries and territories in Asia and Australia: a discrete choice experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Scaling up pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) in the Asia-Pacific region has been slow. We identified the drivers of PrEP use and forecasted PrEP uptake given different PrEP programmes for MSM and TGW living in 15 countries and territories in Asia and Australia. METHODS: Separate online discrete choice experiment surveys for MSM and TGW were distributed in 15 Asian countries and territories and Australia between May and November 2022. We used random parameters logit models to estimate the relative importance

Clade II Mpox Infections Among Cruise Ship Passengers and Crew Members - United States, 2024.

During the global clade II mpox outbreak, cases have disproportionately affected gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Cruise ship travel-associated mpox infections have not been previously described. During January 25-April 18, 2024, CDC was notified of eight mpox cases among cruise travelers on four ships: four among crew members and four among passengers. Seven cases were laboratory-confirmed as clade II Monkeypox virus. All exposure histories indicated male-to-male sexual contact. No patients were hospitalized, and none died. Crew members with mpox received their diagno

The effect of sexual orientation, gender identity, and marital intention on HIV prevention outcomes among MSM students in Southeast China.

Yet studies fail to consider how a lack of concordance among sexual orientation, gender identity, and intent to marry or date a woman hinders the improvement of HIV prevention outcomes. We sought to explore the overlap of the three variables and examine associations between each aspect and HIV prevention outcomes among college students MSM. A cross-sectional study was conducted in six cities in Zhejiang province in 2022. All subjects were recruited by four community-based organizations, reporting sexual orientation, HIV knowledge, HIV self-testing, Post-exposure Prophylaxis(PEP), and Pre-expos

Long-term protection and response to a booster dose after primary hepatitis B vaccination in people under pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV infection.

BACKGROUND: Universal hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination was introduced in Italy in 1991. However, the long-term durability of vaccine-induced protection remains under debate, particularly among high-risk groups such as men who have sex with men (MSM) using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This study aimed to assess HBV seroprotection and the immune response to a booster vaccine nearly 30 years after infant immunization among MSM-PrEP users. SETTING: This retrospective study included Italian MSM using PrEP under 35 years of age in Milan, Italy, between 2017 and 2024. METHODS: HBV serolo

High rate of HCV reinfection and the efficacy of standard regimens in men who have sex with men living with HIV.

In Japan, the prevalence of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has declined due to the widespread use of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs). However, sexually transmitted HCV remains a concern among people with HIV (PWH), especially men who have sex with men (MSM). We examined PWH newly diagnosed with HCV infection between 2015 and 2024, focusing on reinfections. During this 10-year period, 26 cases were identified (incidence rate: 5.0 per 1000 person-years; 95 % CI: 3.2-7.3), including 7 reinfections (27 %). None experienced more than two episodes. Among the reinfection cases, two individ

Forced Sexual Encounters and HIV Pre- and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Use Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) experiencing forced sexual encounters (FSE) are at heightened HIV vulnerability. PrEP and PEP are effective HIV prevention strategies; yet, limited research exists exploring the relationships between FSE, PrEP, and PEP use. Primary data were collected from August 2022-July 2023. Among the 21,373 participants, 21% experienced FSE in the last 5 years, 3.26% indicated past-year PEP use, and 24.81% reported current PrEP use. MSM who experienced FSE reported greater odds of past-year PEP use and lower odds of current PrEP use. Communication surrounding HIV prevention

Understanding social context in HIV and drug use via community-informed computational modeling: SILOS study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Racial, ethnic, and sexual and gender minority populations are disproportionately impacted by HIV and other infectious diseases. A rigorous and holistic view of how individual and complex factors interact to produce health disparities among minority populations is urgently necessary. METHODS: This project seeks to understand the social and contextual systems around the most marginalized HIV-impacted populations by investigating how differences in access to people and places confer HIV risk. Specifically, we have planned an innovative observational study across five US cities, ad

Are Clinicians Open to Less Asymptomatic STI Screening for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea in Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men and the Possibility of Not Treating Positive Diagnoses? A Qualitative Study from Australia.

Evidence from real-world studies suggests that 3-monthly screening for asymptomatic chlamydia/gonorrhea is not reducing incidence and is driving increased antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). While some countries are recommending less screening, changes to guidelines require clinician buy-in. This study explored the views of Australian sexual health clinicians on changing practices around asymptomatic screening for chlamydia/gonorrhea in gay, bisexual, and other men-who-have-sex-with-men and attitudes to not automatically treating positive diagnoses. Between September and Decembe

Doxycycline Postexposure Prophylaxis and Sexually Transmitted Infection Trends.

IMPORTANCE: Increasing rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been associated with rises in serious morbidity. While doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP), a strategy in which individuals take doxycycline, 200 mg, after condomless sex to prevent bacterial STIs, has been shown to be efficacious in randomized clinical trials, doxyPEP's potential effect on population-level STI incidence is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of citywide doxyPEP guideline release with reported chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early syphilis cases in men who have sex with men (MSM) and in

[Sexual behaviour and incidence of sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) using daily and event-driven pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP): Four-year follow-up of the Amsterdam PrEP (AMPrEP) demonstration project cohort].

OBJECTIVE: HIV can be effectively prevented by oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). When PrEP was introduced, there was apprehension that condom use would decrease and STIs would increase. The purpose of this study was to investigate sexual behaviour and STI incidence among PrEP users. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study METHODS: The Amsterdam PrEP demonstration project (AMPrEP) provided oral PrEP to men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women from 2015 to 2020. Participants could choose between daily and event-driven PrEP. We tested for HIV and STIs at each quarterly study visit.

Correlates of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis cessation among men who have sex with men in China: implications from a nationally quantitative and qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated the population-level effectiveness of oral PrEP in reducing the risk of HIV infection. However, oral PrEP utilization among MSM in China remains below 1%. While existing literature has primarily focused on oral PrEP preference and willingness, there is limited exploration of the underlying factors contributing to oral PrEP cessation in China. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the factors associated with oral PrEP cessation among MSM in China. METHODS: Assisted by MSM community organizations, we collected 6,535 electronic questionna
