Acute eosinophilic pneumonia in a heroin smoker.

Inhalation of heroin is known to provoke asthma. We report on the case of a patient who, after repeated inhalation of heroin, presented with decreased lung volume associated with bronchial hyperresponsiveness, diffuse pulmonary infiltrates, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid eosinophilia. Rapid remission was obtained after heroin abstinence and initiation of corticosteroid treatment.

Can Verbal Cues Enhance Respiratory-Swallow Coordination for Individuals Following Head and Neck Cancer?

Atypical respiratory-swallow coordination is associated with increased aspiration risk and swallow inefficiency. While verbal cueing has been shown to influence respiratory-swallow coordination in people with Parkinson's disease, its effect in individuals following head and neck cancer remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the effect of verbal cuing on respiratory-swallow coordination in this population. A prospective, with-in subjects' design was employed. Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography, nasal airflow and submental electromyograms were used to capture respiratory-swallow patter

Analysis of diaphragm movements to specify geometric uncertainties of respiratory gating near end-exhalation for irradiation fields involving the liver dome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The technique of gating near end-exhalation is commonly adopted to reduce respiration-associated geometric uncertainties for particle beam therapy. However, for irradiation fields involving the liver dome, how diaphragm movements generating liver-lung interface change, alongside geometric uncertainties, remain unspecified. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients receiving respiratory-gated computed tomography (RGCT) with four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) scans during simulation were retrospectively reviewed. Differences (Δ) between RGCT and 4DCT images, including dia

Effects of acute exercise on CO(2) -induced fear.

BACKGROUND: Acute exercise has shown to reduce the effects of experimental panic provocation in healthy volunteers and in patients with panic disorder. Recent evidence suggests that when larger amounts of CO(2) are inhaled, a large proportion of healthy subjects can also develop an affective response consistent with definitions of a panic attack. Our aim was to test whether exercise can show antipanic effects in healthy subjects when exposed to higher concentrations of CO(2). METHODS: Thirty-one healthy subjects, on four separate occasions in a randomized Latin square design, performed either

Behavioural effects of prenatal exposure to carbon disulphide and to aromatol in rats.

The neurotoxic effects of prenatal organosolvent inhalation were studied in rats, because of the expectation that a developing organism may be more sensitive than the adult to the induction of functional deficits. The aim was to determine whether prenatal exposure to the new organosolvent mixture, Aromatol, and the well known neurotoxic carbon disulphide, would impair reflex ontogeny or produce neurobehavioural dysfunctions in the offspring. Development of gait, motor coordination, and activity, avoidance learning and swimming were tested in the offspring of CFY rat mothers, exposed to CS2 inh

Antifibrotics Effect of Liposome-Encapsulated Composition of Oxidized Dextran and Isonicotinic Acid Hydrazide in Mice with BCG-Induced Granulomatosis Depends on Administration Route.

We studied the response of the extracellular matrix of the lungs and liver in mice with BCGinduced granulomatosis (3 months) after inhalation and intraperitoneal administration of liposome-encapsulated dextrazide (LEDZ): a conjugate of oxidized dextran (40 kDa) and isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INH). LEDZ inhalation proved to be more effective in reducing fibrosis severity, both in the lungs and liver. However, the mechanisms of the antifibrotic effect were different: increased degradation and reduced collagen synthesis in the lungs and reduced collagen synthesis and collagen degradation in the

[Specific hyposensitization of microbial allergy by using a synthetic artificial polyelectrolyte].

In this work the effectiveness of complex immunotherapy, including specific inhalation hyposensitization with the introduction of artificial synthetic polyelectrolite, was studied. Specific allergen produced a good effect (75%) in the inhalation hyposensitization of hemophilic allergy. The intramuscular injection of artificial synthetic polyelectrolite, made in addition to the inhalation of allergen, produced a better desensitizing effect than the separate administration of allergen or polyelectrolite. The multiple administration of polyelectrolite produced a desensitizing effect on allergic r

Bronchial reactivity in asthmatic adults with normal spirometric values.

A comparison was made between airways obstruction produced by exercise. Hyperventilation of cold air, hyperventilation of room air, and inhalation of ultrasonically nebulised distilled water. Seven asthmatics with no airflow obstruction were studied together with seven normal controls. All four provocations produced comparable mean reductions in forced expired volume in one second in the asthmatic patients, but no reduction was obtained in the controls. Whereas exercise, hyperventilation of cold air, and hyperventilation of room air were associated with heat loss from airways, inhalation of ne

Anthrax: a systematic review of atypical presentations.

During the 2001 US anthrax attacks, mortality from inhalational anthrax was significantly lower than had been reported historically, which was attributed in part to early identification and timely treatment. During future attacks, clinicians will rely on published descriptions of the clinical features of inhalational anthrax to rapidly diagnose patients and institute appropriate treatment. Published descriptions of typical inhalation anthrax usually include patients presenting with cough, dyspnea, or chest pain and found to have abnormal lung examination results with pleural effusions or enlar

Particle Size Dependent Dissolution of Uranium Aerosols in Simulated Gastrointestinal Fluids.

Uranium aerosol exposure can be a health risk factor for workers in the nuclear fuel industry. Good knowledge about aerosol dissolution and absorption characteristics in the gastrointestinal tract is imperative for solid dose assessments and risk management. In this study, an in vitro dissolution model of the GI tract was used to experimentally study solubility of size-fractionated aerosols. The aerosols were collected from four major workshops in a nuclear fuel fabrication plant where uranium compounds such as uranium hexafluoride (UF 6 ), uranium dioxide (UO 2 ), ammonium uranyl carbonate, A

Upper respiratory tract infections and scald burns: Risks and insights on home remedies.

BACKGROUND: Home remedies such as steam inhalation are often considered a means to alleviate symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). While little evidence supports this practice, steam inhalation remains popular despite posing a risk of burn injury, especially amongst children. A retrospective review was conducted of paediatric patients referred for the treatment of burn injuries caused by such home remedies at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, between 2010 and 2024. METHODS: Data from the NSW Statewide Burns Injury Service and a review of

Effects of controlled carbon dioxide delivery by a novel device on sleep in healthy subjects.

Low-dose carbon dioxide (CO2) can stabilize ventilatory drive, reduce sleep-disordered breathing, and improve sleep quality. However, the existing delivery systems introduce dead space and resistance that limit tolerability. We developed a novel mask with low resistance and minimal dead space to deliver CO2 and evaluated its overnight effects on neural respiratory drive, sleep architecture, and potential CO2 accumulation in healthy individuals. Sixteen healthy volunteers [age 42 ± 15 yr; body mass index (BMI) 22.0 ± 2.3 kg/m2] first underwent polysomnography with diaphragmatic electromyography

Physiologic oxygen responses to smoking opioids: an observational study using continuous pulse oximetry at overdose prevention services in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: In British Columbia, Canada, smoking is the most common modality of drug use among people who die of opioid toxicity. We aimed to assess oxygen saturation (SpO2) while people smoked opioids during a pilot study that introduced continuous pulse oximetry at overdose prevention services (OPS) sites. METHODS: This was an observational cohort study, using a participatory design. We implemented our monitoring protocol from March to August 2021 at four OPS. We included adults (≥ 18 years) presenting to smoke opioids. A sensor taped to participants' fingers transmitted real-time SpO2 read

Development of a Controlled-Dose Aerosol Challenge Method Using a Lung Fluid Quantitative Nebulizer.

Airborne transmission represents a primary route of influenza virus dissemination. In animal infection models, conventional intranasal instillation fails to recapitulate the physiological features of natural respiratory infection. Existing aerosol-based challenge methods-including whole-body inhalation and oronasal exposure-face limitations in precise quantification of the delivered infectious dose. Moreover, oronasal exposure systems require specialized, high-cost instrumentation. This study established an economical and dosing-controlled aerosol challenge method utilizing a lung fluid quanti
