Subtle gait changes in patients with REM sleep behavior disorder.

Many people with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) have an underlying synucleinopathy, the most common of which is Lewy body disease. Identifying additional abnormal clinical features may help in identifying those at greater risk of evolving to a more severe syndrome. Because gait disorders are common in the synucleinopathies, early abnormalities in gait in those with RBD could help in identifying those at increased risk of developing overt parkinsonism and/or cognitive impairment. We identified 42 probable RBD subjects and 492 controls using the Mayo Sleep Questionnaire a

The effect of endogenous parathyroid hormone in iliac bone structure and turnover in healthy postmenopausal women.

Little is known about the effect of endogenous parathyroid hormone (PTH) on the skeleton in postmenopausal women without hyperparathyroidism. In this study, the effects of PTH on bone were investigated in iliac crest biopsies obtained from 37 healthy white postmenopausal women aged 50-73 years. The results showed that neither cancellous nor cortical bone structure changed with serum PTH levels. In cancellous bone, bone formation (wall thickness, osteoid surface, osteoblast surface, mineralizing surface, and mineral apposition rate) and turnover (bone formation rate at the surface, volume level

Jejunal morphology and blood metabolites in tail biting, victim and control pigs.

Tail biting has several identified feeding-related risk factors. Tail biters are often said to be lighter and thinner than other pigs in the pen, possibly because of nutrition-related problems such as reduced feed intake or inability to use nutrients efficiently. This can lead to an increase in foraging behavior and tail biting. In this study, a total of 55 pigs of different ages were selected according to their tail-biting behavior (bouts/hour) and pen-feeding system to form eight experimental groups: tail-biting pigs (TB), victim pigs (V) and control pigs from a tail-biting pen (Ctb) and con

Determination of volatile components of green, black, oolong and white tea by optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction-dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupled with gas chromatography.

Ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) followed by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) was used for extraction and preconcentration of volatile constituents of six tea plants. The preconcentrated compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Totally, 42 compounds were identified and caffeine was quantitatively determined. The main parameters (factors) of the extraction process were optimized by using a central composite design (CCD). Methanol and chloroform were selected as the extraction solvent and preconcentration solvent, respectively .The optimal cond

The deficit of letter processing in developmental dyslexia: combining evidence from dyslexics, typical readers and illiterate adults.

To clarify the link between anomalous letter processing and developmental dyslexia, we examined the impact of surrounding contours on letter vs. pseudo-letter processing by three groups of children - phonological dyslexics and two controls, one matched for chronological age, the other for reading level - and three groups of adults differing by schooling and literacy - unschooled illiterates and ex-illiterates, and schooled literates. For pseudo-letters, all groups showed congruence effects (CE: better performance for targets surrounded by a congruent than by an incongruent shape). In contrast,

Associations of mammographic dense and nondense areas and body mass index with risk of breast cancer.

Mammographic density measurements are associated with risk of breast cancer. Few studies have investigated the concurrent associations of mammographic dense and nondense areas, body mass index (weight (kg)/height (m)(2)), and ages at mammogram and diagnosis with breast cancer risk. We conducted a matched, case-control study nested within the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study (cohort recruitment in 1990-1994 and follow-up until 2007) to estimate the associations between these factors and breast cancer risk under alternative causal models. Mammographic dense area was positively associated wit

No effect of embryo culture media on birthweight and length of newborns.

STUDY QUESTION: Does the type of media used to culture embryos for IVF influence the birthweight and length of neonates? SUMMARY ANSWER: No significant differences were observed in birthweight and length among the three embryo culture media used for in vitro embryo culture. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Since the establishment of IVF as an assisted reproductive technology (ART), many different culture systems have been used for the development of human embryos. Some studies have shown that the types of culture media influence the newborn birthweight; however, other studies have shown no effect. To

Thermal responses to whole-body cooling in air with special reference to arteriovenous anastomoses in fingers.

The arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs) in the distal parts of the extremities play a significant role in the heat exchange with the environment. The aim of the study was to examine the thermal responses to whole-body cooling in air, and especially the behaviour of finger skin temperature (T(f) , rich in AVAs). Eight young men sat in minimal clothing at 32°C air temperature (T(a) ), which was then lowered gradually to 13°C in 100 min. In the beginning of cooling, T(f) was high and fluctuating, and then suddenly exhibited a rapid fall, while temperatures in other skin sites fell fairly linearly al

Co-rumination mediates contagion of internalizing symptoms within youths' friendships.

Peer contagion of internalizing symptoms was examined within youths' friendships over 6 months. Children (Grades 3 and 5) and adolescents (Grades 7 and 9) paired in 274 reciprocal same-sex friendship dyads completed measures of depressive and anxiety symptoms, co-rumination, and self-disclosure. Depression contagion was present for all youth, and anxiety contagion was found in the sample of girls and older boys. Although normative self-disclosure did not mediate the contagion effects, co-rumination mediated the depression contagion effect for adolescents and the anxiety contagion effect in the

Three-dimensional mapping of hippocampal and amygdalar structure in euthymic adults with bipolar disorder not treated with lithium.

Structural neuroimaging studies of the amygdala and hippocampus in bipolar disorder have been largely inconsistent. This may be due in part to differences in the proportion of subjects taking lithium or experiencing an acute mood state, as both factors have recently been shown to influence gray matter structure. To avoid these problems, we evaluated euthymic subjects not currently taking lithium. Thirty-two subjects with bipolar type I disorder and 32 healthy subjects were scanned using magnetic resonance imaging. Subcortical regions were manually traced, and converted to three-dimensional mes

Age-related changes in spatiotemporal characteristics of gait accompany ongoing lower limb linear growth in late childhood and early adolescence.

Walking gait is generally held to reach maturity, including walking at adult-like velocities, by 7-8 years of age. Lower limb length, however, is a major determinant of gait, and continues to increase until 13-15 years of age. This study used a sample from the Fels Longitudinal Study (ages 8-30 years) to test the hypothesis that walking with adult-like velocity on immature lower limbs results in the retention of immature gait characteristics during late childhood and early adolescence. There was no relationship between walking velocity and age in this sample, whereas the lower limb continued t

Charge heterogeneity of monoclonal antibodies by multiplexed imaged capillary isoelectric focusing immunoassay with chemiluminescence detection.

Characterization of charge heterogeneity of recombinant monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) requires high throughput analytical methods to support clone selection and formulation screens. We applied the NanoPro technology to rapidly measure relative charge distribution of mAbs in early stage process development. The NanoPro is a multiplexed capillary-based isoelectric immunoassay with whole-column imaging detection. This assay offers specificity, speed and sensitivity advantages over conventional capillary isoelectric focusing (CIEF) platforms. After CIEF, charge variants are photochemically immobili

Determination of CMPO using HPLC-UV.

Octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) is an extractant proposed for selective separation of radionuclide metals from used nuclear fuel solutions using solvent extraction. Radiolysis reactions can degrade CMPO and reduce separation performance and hence methods for measuring the concentration of CMPO are needed. A novel high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed for measuring CMPO in dodecane that featured a low pH buffer, octanol as a co-solvent with 2-propanol, and ultraviolet (UV) detection. Validation data indicated that the HPLC-UV method

Comparison of upper arm kinematics during a volleyball spike between players with and without a history of shoulder injury.

Volleyball players are at high risk of overuse shoulder injuries, with spike biomechanics a perceived risk factor. This study compared spike kinematics between elite male volleyball players with and without a history of shoulder injuries. Height, mass, maximum jump height, passive shoulder rotation range of motion (ROM), and active trunk ROM were collected on elite players with (13) and without (11) shoulder injury history and were compared using independent samples t tests (P < .05). Anosognosia: patients' distress and self-awareness of deficits in Alzheimer's disease.

We aimed to study how patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) suffer from awareness of their deficits. Self-awareness was assessed using the Anosognosia Questionnaire for Dementia in 12 pairs of MCI outpatients and caregivers, 23 with mild AD, and 18 with moderate AD. The discrepancy between patient's and caregiver's evaluation (anosognosia) became greater as AD progressed. The predictors of patients' distress, shown by multiple linear regression analyses, were awareness of decline in intellectual or social functioning; self-awareness of deficits in rememberi

Are existing measures of overall diet quality associated with peak bone mass in young premenopausal women?

BACKGROUND: Low peak bone mass in young adulthood is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and fracture after menopause, and an understanding of the modifiable factors that contribute to low peak bone mass is important for fracture prevention. Diet is an important modifiable factor linked to bone health and, although studies have examined the role of individual dietary components in bone health, bone growth and maintenance are complex processes, and such studies may not adequately represent the role of diet in these processes. METHODS: To address this issue, a cross-sectional anal
