Metal-based nanoplatforms for enhancing the biomedical applications of berberine: current progress and future directions.

The isoquinoline alkaloid berberine, a bioactive compound derived from various plants, has demonstrated extensive therapeutic potential. However, its clinical application is hindered by poor water solubility, low bioavailability, rapid metabolism, and insufficient targeting. Metal-based nanoplatforms offer promising solutions, enhancing drug stability, controlled release, and targeted delivery. This review comprehensively explores the synthesis, physicochemical properties, and biomedical applications of metal-based nanocarriers, including gold, silver, iron oxide, zinc oxide, selenium, and mag

Tailoring polymer-metal-organic frameworks (polyMOFs) using telechelic poly(octenamer)s.

Polymer-metal-organic frameworks (polyMOFs) represent an unusual class of polymer-MOF hybrids, but inadequate methods for designing and tailoring their underlying polymeric building blocks have been a limitation of these systems. Previous efforts in designing polyMOFs using random copoly(pentenamer)s resulted in a rather limited loading (30%) of benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H2bdc; a.k.a, terephthalic acid) derived monomers into the polymer ligand. In this context, this study employs poly(octenamer)s that allowed for 100% incorporation of H2bdc containing monomers. This was achieved by homopo

Phosphinoamine coinage metal complexes with a coumarin fluorophore: synthesis, characterization, and in vitro (photo)cytotoxicity.

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of coinage metal complexes coordinated to a coumarin-functionalized (bis(4-(tert-butyl)phenyl)) phosphinoamine ligand (L1). Treatment of the ligand with CuCl led to the formation of an unexpected tetranuclear compound [L1CuCl]4, while reaction with [Au(tht)2SbF6] or [Au(tht)Cl] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) in an equimolar ratio resulted in [L12Au]SbF6 or [L1AuCl]. Reaction of the latter compound with 1-thio-β-D-glucose tetraacetate (Glc) led to [L1Au(Glc)]. Owing to the presence of the fluorophore, the resulting metal complexes exhibited stro

Geographical association of heavy metal exposure and semen quality: A national multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing the adverse effects of geographical heavy metal mixture exposure on human semen quality is challenging. Our study aims to quantify the impact of these heavy metals on semen quality under both individual and combined exposures. METHODS: We recruited 32,072 reproductive-age men from ten human sperm banks across 31 provinces in China during the period from 2019 to 2022. Geographical heavy metal exposure was quantitatively assessed using the inverse distance weighting algorithm. The Power of Determinant (PD) values were calculated using the Geodetector (GD) to assess the ind

Revisiting the significance of kinetic inertia in complex formation/decomplexation of metal-ATCUN peptide complexes.

Research on copper and nickel complexes formed by an amino terminal Cu(II) and Ni(II) binding (ATCUN) motif has greatly progressed in recent decades. These compounds are of considerable interest in bioinorganic chemistry, both as potential metallodrug candidates and as artificial metalloenzymes. Although the high stability of the Cu(II)- and Ni(II)-ATCUN complexes under physiologically relevant conditions is well established, the kinetic inertia associated with their formation has often been underestimated, particularly in the context of their catalytic applications. Here, we prepared ATCUN pe

Developmental toxicity of co-exposure of heavy metal and polystyrene microplastics in Xenopus laevis embryo.

Microplastics are widespread pollutants that bioaccumulate and biomagnify across trophic levels. In freshwater ecosystems, the co-occurrence with heavy metals, resulting from anthropogenic activities, is frequent and raises significant environmental concerns. Although combined exposures generally produce more potent effects than single contaminants, the interactions remain poorly understood, as weaker, antagonistic, inhibitory, and sub- or infra-additive effects have also been reported. Therefore, this study investigated the developmental toxicity of simultaneous exposure to cadmium, copper, l

Occupational noise annoyance and sensitivity as potential contributors to oxidative stress in metal industry workers.

Noise is recognized as a psychological stressor that led to noise annoyance, and individual noise sensitivity could play a moderating role. This study aimed to investigate the association between noise annoyance, noise sensitivity, and oxidative stress responses among workers in metal manufacturing industries. A total of 161 workers participated in the study. Demographic data and noise sensitivity were assessed using the Weinstein Noise Sensitivity Scale, while noise annoyance was evaluated via the ISO/TS 15666:2003 questionnaire. Daily noise exposure was measured using a sound level meter. Se

Selective C-H Borylation of Polyaromatic Compounds Enabled by Metal-Arene π-Complexation.

The undirected Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation usually occurs preferentially at the least hindered and more acidic C-H bond of the aromatic ring. In the case of polyaromatic compounds possessing multiple unbiased and sterically accessible C-H bonds, the site selectivity for the nondirected C-H borylation is low. Here, we report the dramatic effect exerted by the π-complexation of a chromium tricarbonyl unit on the aromatic ring in the context of Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation. Competition experiments demonstrate that the C-H bonds of an aromatic ring bound to the chromium tricarbonyl unit react on av

A main-group metal carbonyl complex: Structure and isomerization to a carbene-stabilized tin atom.

In contrast to transition elements, s- and p-block metal compounds that coordinate carbon monoxide (CO) under near-ambient conditions are elusive. Here, we report an isolable, crystalline main-group metal carbonyl complex and its isomerization to a carbene-stabilized metal atom. The stannylene (Boryl)2Sn [where Boryl is B(NDippCH)2] coordinates CO reversibly, affording an isolable adduct below 0°C, which was characterized by x-ray crystallography. This complex rearranges at temperatures above 0°C to generate the stannavinylidene, (Boryl)(OBoryl)C=Sn, that is, a complex between the triplet carb

Ultrafine metal nanoparticles isolated on oxide nano-islands as exceptional sintering-resistant catalysts.

Ultrafine nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted extensive research interest, especially in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the inherent sintering propensity of NPs has been a major obstacle to their catalytic stability. Here we report an isolation strategy to preserve highly dispersed ultrafine NPs under extremely harsh conditions. Oxide nano-islands were grafted between the catalyst support and metal NPs, serving as a general approach by following a charge attraction principle. Specifically, LaOx nano-islands were ideally suited for stabilizing Ru NPs among the synthetic library, exhibiting st

Heavy metal accumulation and transfer between soils-plants-goats in a Mo-mining area.

The effect of Mo mining on soil-plant-animal ecosystem heavy metal accumulation and migration has not been well investigated. In this work, soil, native plants, and goat hair samples were collected from mining, urban, and rural areas near a Mo-mining area in Luanchuan, China and analyzed for Mo, Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Mn concentrations. Molybdenum had the largest pollution indices (soil heavy metal concentration/background value) among all metals. Although mining area soil had greater concentrations of all seven metals as compared to urban and rural areas, significant differences were only fo

Strategies for industrial residue valorization through metal recovery, use in construction, or CO2 mineralization.

Effective strategies for waste valorization from industrial residues include metal recovery, use in construction materials, and CO2 mineralization, all of which extend the value of these materials and reduce direct disposal. This study reviews valorization potential across an array of industrial residues, including pyrometallurgical slags, hydrometallurgical residues, power-plant combustion ashes, and mine wastes. Critical metal recovery is prioritized over construction material use driven by metal supply needs, starting with the extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) followed by other metal

Electric field-driven interfacial reduction of metal ions in microdroplets: gold, silver, and nickel.

A bulk aqueous solution containing 100 μM HAuCl4 has been shown to spontaneously form gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) in 2-3 days when stored at room temperature. We demonstrate that Au NPs can be spontaneously formed within a few microseconds to milliseconds when the same solution is sprayed in the form of microdroplets (10-30 μm in diameter) using N2 as the nebulizing gas under ambient conditions. The rapid formation of Au NPs establishes that the air-water interface of microdroplets plays a dominant role. The reduction of metal ions in water microdroplets is driven by electron transfer at the a

Programmable metal-based immuno-photocatalytic nanoparticles for precision activation of anti-tumor immunity.

In spite of the introduction of cancer immunotherapy for improving tumor suppression, the modality of this revolutionary treatment has faced a number of challenges because of immune evasion, poor tumor immunogenicity, and resistance in solid tumors. To address these challenges, immuno-photocatalytic nanoparticles have been engineered to enable spatiotemporal activation of antitumor immunity by integrating phototherapy with immune modulation. These multifunctional nanoplatforms utilize photo- or ultrasound-responsive cores to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), stimulate immunogenic cell de

Multifunctional Responsive Gas-Releasing Metal Organic Framework Nanoplatform for Tumor Therapy Application.

Gas therapy (GT), which regulates the tumor microenvironment by releasing therapeutic gas molecules (e.g., O2, NO), has taken an innovative direction in tumor therapy. However, conventional gas-releasing molecules (GRMs) suffer from core problems such as uncontrollable release, poor targeting, and insufficient stability. To address these challenges, nanoplatforms represented by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer an innovative solution. MOFs, with their high specific surface area, tunable porosity, and abundant active sites, are able to significantly enhance the storage and release efficienc

Mediation and moderation by inflammation and dietary patterns in heavy metal exposure effects on kidney function.

Heavy metals are highly nephrotoxic and may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease. However, the potential roles of inflammatory responses and dietary patterns in the relationship between heavy metals and kidney disease remain underexplored. This study examines the heavy metal exposure-inflammatory response-kidney function decline pathway and the modulating role of dietary patterns in heavy metal-induced kidney damage. Results from generalized linear models, restricted cubic spline models, and weighted quantile regression models show that exposure to individual heavy metals in blood and u

Development of Polymer-Metal Screw System for Bone Fracture Repair: Combining Strength and Biocompatibility.

Bone screws and plates are either made of metals (such as titanium grade 5 alloy or magnesium alloy) or polymers (such as polylactide-co-glycolide, poly-l-lactide, or polyurethane) and are used for the treatment of bone fractures. However, these metallic/polymeric orthopedic products also exhibit several complications, including bone tissue damage, stress shielding, metallosis, and inadequate stability of polymers. We aimed to create a polymer-metal screw system to fix the problems associated with conventional screws in fracture surgery, and in this context, the polymer-metal screw system was

Effects of Metal Implants on Computed Tomographic Attenuation Values in the Canine Antebrachium: A Cadaveric Study.

Computed tomography (CT) of postoperative orthopedic cases can yield valuable clinical information, especially when radiographic findings are equivocal. Image quality can be adversely affected by the presence of metallic implants. Several studies evaluating metal artifacts on CT have been published in humans, but studies involving veterinary patients are limited. This study aimed to assess attenuation value changes caused by metal artifacts on adjacent anatomical structures. This prospective cadaveric study included 20 Greyhound cadaver forelimbs. The limbs underwent CT before and after applic
