Microglial Autofluorescence in the Brain and Retina is Dynamically Modulated by Systemic Inflammation.

The retina-an extension of the central nervous system-contains microglia that survey and respond to injury or pathogens. In response to their environmental milieu, these cells accumulate autofluorescent material likely reflective of cellular debris. Measuring these autofluorescence changes may be a useful tool for early diagnosis of brain-related inflammatory conditions or diseases by imaging the eye. To assess this, we gave Wistar rats a systemic immune challenge with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 250 µg/kg, intraperitoneally) and examined autofluorescence characteristics of the microglia in brain

Non-Invasive Skin Cancer Diagnosis by Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy: Biophysics, Devices, Clinical Evidence, and Future Directions.

Skin cancer represents a growing global health burden. Current diagnostic pathways combine clinical examination and dermoscopy with histopathological confirmation; however, overlap between benign and malignant lesions can create diagnostic uncertainty and lead to potentially avoidable biopsies. Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has emerged as a non-invasive technique with potential for portable and cost-efficient implementation that quantifies the dielectric contrast between malignant and healthy tissue, providing objective information that may support clinical decision-making. This revi

Exploring the anti-quorum sensing potential of synthetic lipstick dyes against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Lip care products such as balms, glosses, and lipsticks are widely used to enhance lip health, appearance, and protection. Lipsticks provide aesthetic appeal, social and psychological benefits, that act as a protective barrier against environmental stressors. However, growing concerns have emerged regarding chronic lip infections associated with multidrug-resistant bacteria, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This is especially concerning in individuals with conditions such as juvenile bullous pemphigoid, hypochromic microcytic anemia, and sickle cell trait. The persistence of P. aeruginosa

Evaluation of Acellular Intact Fish Skin Grafts for Treating Acute and Chronic Wounds.

Acute, chronic, and hard-to-heal wounds pose a growing challenge due to reduced patient quality-of-life, higher cost and increased hospital admissions. Although there is no gold standard for wound care, there is a trend toward simple, outpatient-compatible treatment options. Acellular dermal fish skin derived from Gadus morhua (Atlantic cod) is a promising alternative. This retrospective study evaluated the surgical procedures and outcomes associated with fish-skin graft transplantation for difficult-to-treat wounds. Forty-four patients (33 male and 11 female; mean age: 72.4 years; mean wound

Diagnostic techniques for demodicosis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Demodicosis comprises a spectrum of cutaneous conditions resulting from the overproliferation of Demodex mites. Multiple diagnostic techniques are available, although diagnosis can be challenging due to the presence of these mites as commensals in healthy individuals. Thus, the objective of this review is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of methods used for the diagnosis of demodicosis. METHODS: A search was conducted on articles published between 2000 and 2025, using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Dialnet to identify studies on diagnostic methods for cutaneous

Combined use of methyl gallate and N-acyl homoserine lactonase YtnP to inhibit biofilm formation in Burkholderia thailandensis.

Biofilm formation in Burkholderia thailandensis, a model for the causative agent of melioidosis, is critically regulated by N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-mediated quorum sensing (QS), contributing to its pathogenicity and treatment failure. This study investigates a novel combinatorial strategy to disrupt this process by employing methyl gallate, a plant-derived biofilm inhibitor, together with the AHL-lactonase YtnP. Our results demonstrate that methyl gallate not only attenuated B. thailandensis virulence in a Galleria mellonella infection model but also showed a markedly slower developmen

Colloidal packing fraction in sedimented aluminum adjuvants dictate their resuspension rheology.

Vaccine formulations containing aluminum adjuvants can be difficult to resuspend after prolonged storage, rendering them unsuitable for administration. While earlier studies suggested that the increased flocculation generated loosely packed sediments, there is a lack of mechanistic understanding on how particle packing affects resuspendability. In this study, we observe an exponential correlation between the weight fraction of sediments and the number of inversions required for complete resuspension of aluminum phosphate adjuvants formulated with varying ionic strengths (0 and 150 mM sodium ch

Photoreceptor loss does not recruit neutrophils despite strong microglial activation.

In response to central nervous system (CNS) injury, tissue-resident immune cells such as microglia and circulating systemic neutrophils are often first responders. The degree to which these cells interact in response to CNS damage is poorly understood, and even less so, in the neural retina, which poses a challenge for high-resolution imaging in vivo. In this study, we deploy fluorescence adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) to study microglia and neutrophils in mice. We simultaneously track immune cell dynamics using label-free phase-contrast AOSLO at micron-level resolution.

Natural Killer Cell-Derived Exosome Mimetics as Natural Nanocarriers for In Vitro Delivery of Chemotherapeutics to Thyroid Cancer Cells.

BACKGROUND: Exosomes have become a potential field of nanotechnology for the treatment and identification of many disorders. However, the generation of exosomes is a difficult, time-consuming, and low-yielding procedure. At the same time, exosome mimetics (EM) resemble exosomes in their characteristics but have higher production yields. The aim of this study was to produce natural killer (NK) cell-derived EM (NKEM) loaded with sorafenib and test their killing ability against thyroid cancer cell lines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sorafenib was loaded into NKEM by mixing sorafenib with NK cells duri

Quinoxyfen 1995-2019 is the story's end? Evaluation of its adverse effects on head size and nervous system genes involved in synaptic maturation.

In 2013 quinoxyfen (QXY) was included in the list of priority hazard pollutants of the European Water Framework Directive due to its toxicity to aquatic organisms. The use of products formulated containing QXY was banned from all commercials starting from 27th June of 2019. QXY is an organic pollutant with potential persistence, bioaccumulation and this must not lower attention to this pollutant. To date the effects of this compound on development are not completely clear, thus this research tries to elucidate the adverse effects of QXY on zebrafish development. The study aims to understand th

Recombinant Cell-Permeable Puromycin N-Acetyltransferase Confers Puromycin Resistance by Direct Protein Transduction.

Puromycin N-acetyltransferase (PAC) is an enzyme that catalyzes the acetylation of puromycin, an inhibitor of protein synthesis. The PAC gene is often co-transfected with genes of interest in the same vector to serve as a selective marker, conferring puromycin resistance to mammalian cells. Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs), which are 5-30 amino acids in length, facilitate the translocation of functional cargoes across the cell membrane. Among these, the HIV-transactivator of transcription (TAT) sequence is widely applied for its cell-penetrating and protein-delivery capabilities. In this study

Cyanine 5-huwentoxin-IV as a novel imaging probe to detect hNav1.7 channel overexpressed in non-small cell lung cancer.

Currently, tools for detecting cancer cells belonging to the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are lacking. As overexpression of human voltage-gated sodium channel subtype 1.7 (hNav1.7) channels was identified as a promising marker in NSCLC, we investigated whether huwentoxin-IV (HwTx-IV), known to interact preferentially with this sodium channel subtype at nanomolar concentrations, may serve as a practical tool for detecting NSCLC. To achieve this goal, we coupled HwTx-IV to the cyanine 5 fluorophore and evaluated the potential of cyanine 5-HwTx-IV (Cy5-HwTx-IV) as an imaging agent to improv
