A novel OCTA-based image processing method for enhanced microaneurysm detection and 3D visualization in diabetic retinopathy.

The early detection of microaneurysms (MA) in diabetic retinopathy (DR) is crucial for disease management. Although optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) offers non-invasive, high-resolution imags, it still suffers from insufficient sensitivity and limitations of two-dimensional imaging in MA's detection. This study proposes an innovative processing method based on retinal OCTA images that integrates blood flow signals with the hyperreflective features of MA in structural OCT, combined with three-dimensional reconstruction technology, to construct a retinal vascular image (3D-MA map)

Time-step encoded high-frequency enhanced diffusion model for OCT retinal image denoising.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a widely used imaging technique in ophthalmology, capable of non-invasive, high-resolution imaging of retinal tissues. However, OCT images are often degraded by speckle noise, resulting in poor image quality. Deep learning-based denoising models have become the mainstream approach, but existing methods tend to oversmooth images and lose high-frequency details, making it difficult to recover the true retinal structure. This paper proposes a high-frequency enhanced diffusion model based on the cold diffusion framework, named THFN-OCT (time-enhanced high-freq

Minimally invasive, wide-field two-photon imaging of the brainstem at cellular resolution.

Brain-viscera communication is crucial for regulating mental health, with the vagus nerve being a key structure mediating this interaction. Clinically, artificial vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is used to treat various neuropsychiatric disorders, highlighting the importance of vagal afferent fibers in emotion regulation. The nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) is a brainstem structure proposed to receive signals from vagal afferents and relay them to brain networks for emotion regulation. However, due to the anatomical complexity and difficulty in accessing the deep-brain NTS region in vivo, its un

Descemet's membrane detachment: An updated comprehensive review of etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, and management.

The Descemet membrane (DM) is the basement membrane of corneal endothelial cells, which are responsible for maintaining corneal transparency. DM detachment (DMD) can occur due to various reasons, with the most common etiology being post-surgical. Older age, blunt instruments, and faulty surgical technique predispose to the intraoperative or postoperative occurrence of DMD, and one should have a high index of suspicion for DMD in cases with unexplained or an atypical pattern of corneal edema after surgery. Prompt intervention for DMD management is imperative to effect early visual rehabilitatio

Imaging α-synuclein pathologies in animal models and patients with Parkinson's and related diseases.

Deposition of α-synuclein fibrils is implicated in Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), while in vivo detection of α-synuclein pathologies in these illnesses has been challenging. Here, we have developed a small-molecule ligand, C05-05, for visualizing α-synuclein deposits in the brains of living subjects. In vivo optical and positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of mouse and marmoset models demonstrated that C05-05 captured a dynamic propagation of fibrillogenesis along neural pathways, followed by disruptions of these structures. High-affinity binding of 18F-C05

Affordable ultra-widefield smartphone PedCam for comprehensive pediatric retinal examination.

Widefield fundus photography is critical for the detection, documentation, and management of pediatric eye diseases. Existing clinical pediatric fundus cameras offer a limited field of view (FOV) and suboptimal image contrast, hindering comprehensive peripheral retina examination. Additionally, the high cost and lack of portability of commercial devices restrict their use in resource-limited settings. We introduce a cost-effective smartphone-based pediatric camera (PedCam) that provides a 180° eye angle (126° visual angle) snapshot FOV. Utilizing trans-pars planar illumination, the device enab

Multimodal Intravascular Imaging of the Vulnerable Coronary Plaque.

Vulnerable coronary plaques are atherosclerotic lesions which, due to their specific phenotype, are prone to plaque rupture and to cause acute coronary syndromes, with subsequent relevant morbidity and mortality. Strategies to break the chain link between plaque vulnerability and adverse clinical events include optimized pharmacologic prevention and potentially also preemptive percutaneous coronary interventions (previously defined as "plaque sealing" or "plaque passivation"). Various morphologic features of the vulnerable plaques have been described, including aspects regarding the large necr

Endoscopic optical coherence tomography angiography using an externally driving catheter.

Endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging modality that enables cross-sectional subsurface imaging of tubular organs and cavities. Recently, endoscopic OCT angiography (OCTA) was successfully achieved in distal scanning systems using an internal-motor-driving catheter. In conventional OCT systems using externally driving catheters, the mechanical instability in the proximal actuation causes difficulties for differentiating capillaries in tissues. In this study, OCTA in an endoscopic OCT system using an external-motor-driving catheter was proposed. Blood vessels were visualize

Imaging Tools for Noninvasive Hair Assessment.

Trichology tools historically have been limited in their ability to provide noninvasive detailed assessments of the hair and scalp. Recent advances in diagnostic and treatment monitoring technologies have begun to fill this gap. Global photography previously relied on a film camera and stereotactic imaging equipment but has been simplified by the advent of cameras that use software analysis and provide adjustable outlines to match facial features for the capture of standardized views. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) both enable in vivo visualization

Type I interferon shapes brain distribution and tropism of tick-borne flavivirus.

Viral tropism within the brain and the role(s) of vertebrate immune response to neurotropic flaviviruses infection is largely understudied. We combine multimodal imaging (cm-nm scale) with single nuclei RNA-sequencing to study Langat virus in wildtype and interferon alpha/beta receptor knockout (Ifnar-/-) mice to visualize viral pathogenesis and define molecular mechanisms. Whole brain viral infection is imaged by Optical Projection Tomography coregistered to ex vivo MRI. Infection is limited to grey matter of sensory systems in wildtype mice, but extends into white matter, meninges and choroi

Clearance pathways of near-infrared-II contrast agents.

Near-infrared-II (NIR-II) bioimaging gradually becomes a vital visualization modality in the real-time investigation for fundamental biological research and clinical applications. The favorable NIR-II contrast agents are vital in NIR-II imaging technology for clinical translation, which demands good optical properties and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, most NIR-II contrast agents cannot be applied to clinical translation due to the acute or chronic toxicity caused by organ retention in vivo imaging. Therefore, it is critical to understand the pharmacokinetic properties and optimize the cleara

Lysosomal Adenosine Triphosphate-Activated Upconversion Nanoparticle/Carbon Dot Composite for Ratiometric Imaging of Hepatotoxicity.

Drug-induced hepatotoxicity (DIH) is a common cause of acute liver injury, endangering human health. Intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content in hepatocytes is related to hepatotoxicity. Thus, monitoring the dynamic changes in lysosomal ATP is promising to further understand the pathogenesis and accurate evaluation of DIH. Herein, we developed a lysosomal ATP-activated upconversion nanoprobe by decorating ATP-sensitive carbon dots (CDs) on the surface of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) for ratiometric imaging of hepatotoxicity. Owing to the excellent optical characteristics of UCN

SISPO: Space Imaging Simulator for Proximity Operations.

This paper describes the architecture and demonstrates the capabilities of a newly developed, physically-based imaging simulator environment called SISPO, developed for small solar system body fly-by and terrestrial planet surface mission simulations. The image simulator utilises the open-source 3-D visualisation system Blender and its Cycles rendering engine, which supports physically based rendering capabilities and procedural micropolygon displacement texture generation. The simulator concentrates on realistic surface rendering and has supplementary models to produce realistic dust- and gas

Standard values for MRI brain biometry throughout the first year of life.

BACKGROUND: Brain structures in the infant brain are investigated reliably using cranial magnetic resonance imaging. However, the lack of quantitative standard values for various brain regions results in data interpretation that is often subjective or based on small patient cohorts. The aim of this study was to create simple linear measurements to assess brain structures in infancy. METHODS: We assessed cranial magnetic resonance imaging sessions of 131 children without intracerebral pathology retrospectively for size of various brain structures throughout the first year of life. Multiscale photonic imaging of the native and implanted cochlea.

The cochlea of our auditory system is an intricate structure deeply embedded in the temporal bone. Compared with other sensory organs such as the eye, the cochlea has remained poorly accessible for investigation, for example, by imaging. This limitation also concerns the further development of technology for restoring hearing in the case of cochlear dysfunction, which requires quantitative information on spatial dimensions and the sensorineural status of the cochlea. Here, we employed X-ray phase-contrast tomography and light-sheet fluorescence microscopy and their combination for multiscale a
