Zirconium-89-labelled rituximab PET-CT in orbital inflammatory disease.

BACKGROUND: Orbital inflammatory diseases are a heterogenic group of conditions that often entail a difficult diagnostic process and many patients are treatment resistant. Inflammatory diseases can be visualized by Zirconium-89-labelled rituximab PET-CT (89Zr-rituximab PET/CT). In this study, we describe our experience and possible potential of the 89Zr-rituximab PET/CT for diagnostic and therapeutic management of refractory orbital inflammation. RESULTS: Retrospectively, 89Zr-rituximab uptake was assessed and related to clinical data. The main outcome measures were the characteristics of the

Gradual oculomotor training in blow-out orbital fracture reconstruction recovery.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the impact of gradual oculomotor training (GOT) in blow-out orbital fracture (BOF) reconstruction recovery with the impact of high-intensity trainings. METHODS: In total, 120 patients with BOF requiring orbital reconstruction surgery were randomly divided into four groups; all groups performed postoperative oculomotor training four times per day. Patients in Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 performed 10, 20, 30, and 50 sets of all-direction movement per training on the first 3 days, respectively; they performed 10 additional sets per training on the following 4 days. The surgery of intra-orbital hydatid cyst: a case report and literature review.

Intra-orbital hydatid cyst is a very rare pathological entity that affects children and the young adults; it is secondary to the development in the orbit of the echinococcus granulosis tapeworm. Its frequency does not exceed 1% of all cases of hydatid disease. Clinical presentation of intra-orbital hydatid cyst is dominated by proptosis and a decrease in visual acuity, complete surgical excision is difficult, evolution is generally better when the treatment is early before the installation of irreversible optic atrophy. We report one case of a 3 years old girl operated for right intra-orbital

Pathologic Study of Supernumerary Orbital Band in Type I Duane Syndrome.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Accessory orbital bands are relatively rare and very few reports detail histopathology. Cases in the literature describe the composition of the bands as muscular and/or fibrous. The composition of the supernumerary band lying deep in the medial rectus muscle in a patient with type I Duane syndrome was investigated. METHODS: Histochemical stains were used in conjunction with polarized light for differentiating compressed collagen from muscle. Immunohistochemistry was used for verification of the presence of muscle. RESULTS: Compressed collagen appeared red using Masson trichr

Orbital Transitions and Frustrated Magnetism in the Kagome-Type Copper Mineral Volborthite.

Volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2·2H2O is a copper mineral that materializes a two-dimensional quantum magnet comprising a kagome net of spin-1/2 Cu2+ ions. We prepared single crystals of volborthite using hydrothermal conditions and investigated their crystal structures and magnetic properties. Unusual orbital "switching" and "flipping" transitions were observed: in the former type of transition (switching), the Cu 3d orbital occupied by an unpaired electron changes between the d(3z2-r2) and d(x2-y2) types, and in the latter type of transition (flipping), the d(x2-y2)-type orbitals change their direct

Orbital Arteriovenous Fistula around the Optic Nerve Treated by Transvenous Embolization.

Intraorbital arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a very rare disease; therefore an optimal treatment strategy has not yet been established. Here we describe the use of high-resolution cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and selective angiography to visualize the detailed anatomy of orbital vessels. The information provided by the intraoperative imaging led to a change in treatment strategy and eventually to successful transvenous coil embolization. A 55-year-old man presented with a 4 months history of right exophthalmos, chemosis and diplopia. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated a dilate

Pros and Cons of the Transconjunctival Retroseptal Approach to the Isolated Orbital Floor Fracture.

To get access into the orbital floor 3 paths are commonly used which are transconjunctival, subciliary and subtarsal approaches. Each one of these approaches has its advantages and disadvantages. The study assessed the outcomes of the transconjunctival retroseptal approach, which reflects our experience in this type of surgery. Along 8 years, 26 patients received in the emergency room diagnosed with pure isolated orbital floor fractures, all of them admitted to the maxillofacial surgery department and approached by transconjunctival incision without lateral canthotomy. Three types of complicat

Intraoperative Findings of Extraocular Muscle Necrosis in Linear Orbital Trapdoor Fractures.

PURPOSE: Orbital trapdoor fractures can constitute a relative surgical emergency. The reason for poor surgical outcomes in ocular motility disturbances and diplopia is not apparent in these fractures. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze the possibility of ischemic necrosis of the orbital contents in linear trapdoor fracture of the orbital floor and to evaluate the recovery period of trapdoor fractures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 11 patients with linear trapdoor fracture of the orbital floor over 5 years with minimum 1-year follow-up. Patients with associated f

Idiopathic Sclerosing Orbital Inflammation in a Relapsing Polychondritis Patient With Impaired Vision.

A 55-year-old woman with relapsing polychondritis had progressively enlarged right retro-orbital tumor invading the optic nerve, followed by left retrobulbar infiltrating lesions despite prescription of high-dose corticosteroids and pulse methylprednisolone. Repeated histopathologic analyses showed dense collagen fibers with scanty inflammatory cells, consistent with the diagnosis of idiopathic sclerosing orbital inflammation. This disorder has been recognized as a distinct entity with unique clinical features and coexisting rheumatologic disorders, requiring more focused diagnostic strategies

Application of Three-Dimensional Printing Technology in the Orbital Blowout Fracture Reconstruction.

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical outcomes of orbital blowout fracture repair by using the three-dimensional (3D) printing-assisted fabrication of individual titanium mesh. Clinical and radiologic data were analyzed for 12 patients with orbital floor and/or medial wall fractures. Lower eyelid incision was used to expose the fractures. Preoperative computed tomographic data were input into an imaging software to rebuild a 3D orbit and mirror the unaffected side into the affected side to replace the demolished orbit. A resin model of the reshaped orbit was generated and used

Orbital cavernous haemangioma; profile and outcome of 76 patients managed surgically.

Background: Orbital cavernous haemangioma (OCH) is one of the most common primary orbital tumours in adults. They can encroach on intraorbital or adjacent structures and be considered 'anatomically' malignant. Aims: To report a series of patients that were all managed surgically, with possible specificities and propose predictors of treatment outcome. Methods: We realised a hospital-based retrospective case review including data from 76 patient files. Results: The mean age was 37.8 years. Unilateral proptosis was observed in all patients. Visual loss was found in 32 patients (42.1%). Findings
