Stability of Meropenem and Piperacillin/Tazobactam with Heparin in Various Peritoneal Dialysis Solutions.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by ceftazidime-resistant Pseudomonas and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing gram-negative bacteria are increasing worldwide. Meropenem and piperacillin/tazobactam (PIP/TZB) are recommended for the treatment of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP) caused by ceftazidime-resistant Pseudomonas and other resistant gram-negative bacteria. Patients may also receive intraperitoneal heparin to prevent occlusion of their catheters. However, the stability of meropenem or PIP/TZB, in combination with heparin, in different types of peritoneal dialys

The impact of residual renal function on quality of life in patients with peritoneal dialysis
.

BACKGROUND: Residual renal function (RRF) is a crucial factor that plays an important role in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, but whether RRF influences the quality of life (QOL) of PD patients is still controversial. The aims of this study were to explore the effects of RRF on QOL in patients with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and analyze the related factors that might affect patients' QOL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All 120 adult patients in this study received regular CAPD treatment for at least 3 months. Patients were divided into two groups: an RRF group (residual glome

Ferruginous bodies resolved by synchrotron XRF in a dog with peritoneal malignant mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor mainly correlated to occupational asbestos exposure. Rare reports describe its occurrence also in animals, mainly linked to asbestos in the environment. Asbestos exposure is demonstrated by the appearance of characteristic histological hallmarks: asbestos containing ferruginous bodies that are iron-based structures forming around fibers and also other dust particles. Here we present a clinical case of a suspect of mesothelioma in the peritoneum of a dog with parallel histological observation of ferruginous bodies. To possibly correlate the dog tumor to environ

Diaphragmatic smears are not of additional benefit in the detection of peritoneal spread in gynecological cancers.

Peritoneal biopsies (PB) and peritoneal washing (PW) are routine measures in abdominal staging of gynecological malignancies and are used particularly for the assessment of occult microscopic tumor spread to the peritoneal surface including the diaphragm. Cytological diaphragmatic smears (DS) have been suggested as a supplemental tool; however, they are not routinely taken and their usefulness is still unclear. The present study retrospectively evaluated whether DS provide an additional benefit over PB and PW for the detection of peritoneal malignancies in patients with gynecological cancer. T

Study of peritoneal macrophage immunophenotype in sheep experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica.

During Fasciola hepatica infection, the parasite has the capability to modulate the host immune response towards a non-protector Th2 type instead of Th1. This type of immune response is closely related to the alternative activation of macrophages (M2 profile) as has been shown in vivo in murine models. In this study, an experiment was carried out in order to evaluate the expression of CD68, CD14, CD206 and iNOS in cells present in the peritoneal fluid of sheep during early stages of infection with F. hepatica (1, 3, 9 and 18 days post-infection, dpi) by immunocytochemistry. To the authors' kno

Direct peritoneal resuscitation reduces intestinal permeability after brain death.

BACKGROUND: The profound inflammatory response associated with brain death is frequently cited as the reason organs procured from brain dead donors are associated with worse graft function. The intestine releases inflammatory mediators in other types of shock, but its role is brain death has not been well-studied. Direct peritoneal resuscitation (DPR) improves visceral organ blood flow and reduces inflammation after hemorrhagic shock. We hypothesized that use of DPR would maintain intestinal integrity and reduce circulating inflammatory mediators after brain death. METHODS: Brain death was in

Hemodialysis or Peritoneal Dialysis, Which Is Better for Patients with Delayed Graft Function?

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an important renal replacement method in patients with delayed graft function (DGF) after kidney transplantation; however, it is not clear which dialysis modality is superior. This study determined the impact of different dialysis modalities on patients with DGF. METHODS: It was a single-center, retrospective and descriptive study. We performed 673 kidney transplants from donors after cardiac death (DCD) between January 2010 and December 2016 at our center and 138 (20.5%) recipients developed DGF after transplantation. We class

Outcomes of infants receiving chronic peritoneal dialysis: an analysis of the USRDS registry.

BACKGROUND: Outcome data for infants on chronic peritoneal dialysis (CPD) is limited and has been based primarily on the analyses of voluntary entry registry data. In contrast, the United States Renal Data Systems (USRDS) collects data on all infants with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) on chronic dialysis in the USA. We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of this population and to determine the associated patient mortality. METHODS: The USRDS database was reviewed retrospectively for data on infants who initiated CPD at ≤ 12 months of age from 1990 to 2014. Infants were categorize

Postoperative Complications Independently Predict Cancer-Related Survival in Peritoneal Malignancies.

BACKGROUND: The authors hypothesized that postoperative complications after cytoreductive surgery-hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (CRS-HIPEC) have a negative impact on perioperative and oncologic outcomes and that the novel Comprehensive Comorbidity Index (CCI) would be a better predictor of such outcomes than the traditional Clavien-Dindo classification (CDC). METHODS: The study used a prospective database of 1296 patients with peritoneal metastases (PM) undergoing CRS-HIPEC between 2001 and 2016. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate survival. Calcium mediates cell shape change in human peritoneal mesothelial cells.

Mast cells in the peritoneal membrane (PM) may degranulate to release preformed inflammatory mediators including histamine which is capable of diffusing into the surrounding interstitium, modulating cells in their vicinity including, human peritoneal mesothelial cells (hPMC). The present study aimed to investigate the quorum intracellular calcium ([Ca2+i]) response to histamine compared to the membrane soluble ionophore, A23187, in adherent cultured hPMC. To examine [Ca2+i] handling, Fura - 2 loaded cells were exposed to histamine and A23187. Agonist induced transient [Ca2+i] event(s) (TCE) we

A high-density collagen xerogel thread prevents the progression of peritoneal fibrosis.

Peritoneal fibrosis is often provoked by peritoneal dialysis and is an essential precursor condition to the development of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a high-density collagen xerogel thread (CXT) for the prevention of peritoneal fibrosis. Female ICR mice received intraperitoneal injections of chlorhexidine gluconate (CG) every other day to induce peritoneal fibrosis. For evaluation, the insertion of CXT or infusion of atelocollagen gel into the peritoneal cavity was conducted on the day before CG injection. For comparison, no collagen treat

Adult Sporadic Burkitt's Lymphoma Presenting with Rapid Development of Peritoneal Lymphomatosis.

Sporadic Burkitt's Lymphoma (BL) is a highly aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. Though usual presentation involves abdominal lymphadenopathy with possible solid organ involvement, sporadic BL can rarely present with peritoneal lymphomatosis. We present a unique case with rapid evolution of BL presenting as peritoneal and omental lymphomatosis with hepatic lesions and pelvic and pericardial adenopathy.

Peritoneal Deciduoid Mesothelioma: An Unusual Presentation Complicating an Already Challenging Diagnosis.

This report highlights a diagnostically challenging case of diffuse deciduoid mesothelioma occurring in the peritoneum of a 25-year-old woman, 8 months postpartum. Optimally debulked tumor consisted of sheets of polygonal cells arranged in solid, trabecular, and pseudopapillary configurations, with vesicular, occasionally grooved nuclei and small nucleoli. A barrage of immunohistochemical stains revealed an unusual staining pattern characterized by diffusely positive keratin, WT-1, and mesothelin staining, but lack of calretinin positivity. Electron microscopy demonstrated only rare thin, long

Increase in Extracellular Hydration Status After Initiating Peritoneal Dialysis Electively.

Renal replacement therapy is designed to treat uremic symptoms and correct hypervolemia. We hypothesized that starting peritoneal dialysis (PD) should reduce overhydration, and we measured body composition and hydration status using bioimpedance in PD patients prior to training and then at the first assessment of peritoneal membrane function. We studied 100 consecutive patients with a planned start to PD, without peritoneal infections or mechanical catheter problems, mean age 54.7 ± 17.1 years, 57% male and 25% diabetic. Extracellular water (ECW) overhydration increased from -0.06 (-1.21 to 0.

Impact of Diabetes on Extracellular Volume Status in Patients Initiating Peritoneal Dialysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have highlighted that diabetic patients with kidney failure are at increased risk of technique failure and transfer to haemodialysis within 90 days of initiating peritoneal dialysis (PD). We wished to determine whether there were differences between diabetic and non-diabetic patients within the first 3 months of starting PD. METHODS: We reviewed results of corresponding bioimpedance and the 1st test of peritoneal membrane function (PET) in consecutive patients, 6-10 weeks after initiating PD electively. RESULTS: Adult patients numbering 386 - 230 males (59.6%), 152
