Disciplinary removal patterns among students with other health impairments and emotional disturbance: A three-year descriptive analysis of IDEA Part B data.

Students classified under Other Health Impairment (OHI), a category that includes Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), are frequently disciplined in school settings despite ADHD being classified as a neurodevelopmental rather than a behavioral disorder. This study examined patterns of disciplinary removal among students served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Part B, focusing on comparisons between OHI and Emotional Disturbance (ED). Using publicly available IDEA Part B discipline data, a descriptive longitudinal analysis was conducted across three acad

Expanding stop the bleed to achieve health equity: Inclusion of deaf and hard-of-hearing populations in injury prevention and education.

BACKGROUND: Stop the Bleed (STB) is a program that teaches hemorrhage control techniques to the public. While STB has been taught to 4 million people, it is only widely available in English and Spanish languages. Therefore, vulnerable populations with other language preferences may miss this life-saving training. The purpose of our study is to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of adapting STB for the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) community. METHODS: In conjunction with the staff of the Georgia Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a needs assessment was conducted to identify nec

Responses and Nonresponses in a Bound Morpheme Elicitation Task by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

PURPOSE: We aimed to explore the rates of bound morpheme production at two time points (T1 and T2) by deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) preschoolers and their typically hearing (TH) peers. We further sought to describe the rates and types of unscorable responses children produced. METHOD: Sixty-four DHH preschoolers and 66 TH preschoolers participated as part of a larger, ongoing longitudinal study. Children were given the Test of Early Grammatical Impairment (TEGI) screener, which elicits productions of the third-person singular present and past tense. TEGI screeners were given twice, spaced 6

Mental Health-Related Disabilities, Healthcare Utilization, and Access in Young Adults with Anxiety and Depression: A Scoping Review.

Young adults with anxiety and depression often experience mental health-related disabilities (MHRD) that impair social, academic, occupational and daily functioning. These impairments, while significant, are frequently invisible, episodic, or lacking formal recognition; factors that limit their acknowledgment within healthcare systems designed to respond to more visible or diagnostically stable conditions. As MHRD rates among young adults rise there remains limited evidence on how functional impairments shape access to care. This scoping review examines peer-reviewed research on healthcare acc

Trends In Care Needs Among Older US Adults Diverged By Age, 2011-22.

Changing late-life disability and care patterns that may accompany population aging have profound consequences for the nation's health and related public policies. Drawing on two cross-sectional rounds of the National Health and Aging Trends Study, we examined trends among US adults ages 65 and older in 2011, when the oldest members of the baby-boom generation turned age 65, and in 2022, when about half of the generation was ages 65-74. We found increases in the percentage of adults ages 65-74 who reported activity limitations, receiving paid care in the community, and having unmet care needs.

Factors Influencing Exercise Among Adults With Visual Impairments in Brazil and the United States: A Cross-Cultural Qualitative Study Using the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behavior Model.

This study compared exercise factors among 14 adults with visual impairments in Brazil and the United States. Using inductive reflexive thematic analysis mapped onto the capability, opportunity, motivation-behavior model, findings revealed shared initial health motivations but divergent maintenance drivers. Brazilian participants were motivated by social identity and community, whereas Americans prioritized autonomy. Due to inaccessible community fitness spaces, participants adopted distinct coping strategies: American participants typically exercised at home to ensure consistency (often sacri

Distancing and discrediting among persons with an acquired spinal cord injury.

This study examines how individuals with acquired spinal cord injury maintain, contest, and dissolve boundaries within their peer community, with a particular focus on the roles of distancing and discrediting others. Carrying out a 26-month ethnography generated data from participant observation, interviews, social media, crowdfunding initiatives, news stories, government policies, reports, and related research. Drawing on theories of symbolic boundaries and stigmas, we theorised how the comparative context influences how individuals can be included or excluded from peer groups. We found that

Advanced smart human activity recognition system for disabled people using artificial intelligence with snake optimizer techniques.

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has become an active research area in recent years due to its applicability in various domains and the growing need for convenient facilities and intelligent homes for the elderly. Physical activity tends to decrease as people age, along with their ability to perform day-to-day tasks, which affects both mental and physical health. Several investigators apply deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) approaches to recognize human activities, but minimal investigations are concentrated on human activity recognition of older adults. Recently, the DL method has

Toward Inclusive Social Cognition Assessment: Validating a Unified Battery for Hearing and Deaf Children.

The Social Cognition Battery (SCB) was validated as an inclusive tool for assessing social cognition (SC) in hearing and deaf children, addressing cross-cultural gaps. Participants included 154 hearing (M age = 8.10, SD = 1.56) and 30 deaf children (M age = 9.80, SD = 1.97) from Latin America. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a unifactorial SC structure (RMSEA = 0.069, CFI = 0.962) with high reliability (ω = 0.753). Age predicted SC in hearing children, while school year better explained SC in deaf children. ROC analysis (AUC = 0.8126) confirmed strong discriminative ability. The SCB is a
