Bracing of stable shaft fractures of the ulna.

In the laboratory an ulnar osteotomy was performed in 10 cadaveric specimens, which included 5 distal-third junctions and 5 middle-third junctions. The interosseous membrane was left intact. Each specimen was rotated through full pronation and full supination. Displacement less than half shaft width was considered stable. The interosseous membrane was subsequently released 2 cm proximal and 2 cm distal to the osteotomy. Repeated pronation and supination range of motion documented gross displacement greater than half of the width of the shaft and was diagnosed as unstable. To evaluate this hypo

Outcomes of surgical paraclavicular thoracic outlet decompression.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a constellation of signs and symptoms caused by compression of the neurovascular structures in the thoracic outlet. These structures include the brachial plexus, the subclavian vein, and the subclavian artery, resulting in neurogenic (NTOS), venous (VTOS), and arterial (ATOS) types of TOS, respectively. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of paraclavicular surgical decompression for TOS. METHODS: A prospective analysis of patients who underwent surgical decompression for TOS at a newly established center was performed. Diagnosis

Calcium polyphosphate endows silk fibroin hydrogels with enhanced osteogenesis for bone function restoration.

Bone defect repair demands biomaterials that synergize mechanical robustness with osteogenesis potential. The biomaterial performance of conventional crystalline calcium phosphates is often constrained by poor aqueous solubility and slow resorption kinetics. Here, we studied amorphous, hydrophilic and bioactive calcium polyphosphate (CaPP) for the development of regenerated silk fibroin (RSF)-based composite hydrogels to address such challenges. CaPP particles with tunable degrees of polymerization (DP) were synthesized via precursor ratio modulation and ion exchange. The RSF and CaPP mixture

Optimizing Sleep in Athletes: The Potential of α-Lactalbumin in Nutrition Intervention.

Athletes frequently encounter sleep deprivation due to the demands of high-intensity training and competition, which can significantly impair their physical recovery and athletic performance. α-Lactalbumin (α-LA), a key component of whey protein that is rich in tryptophan, has been shown to promote the synthesis of serotonin and melatonin, thereby regulating sleep cycles. Moreover, α-LA has demonstrated the ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress associated with fatigue and stress, further contributing to improved sleep quality. This review provides a critical evaluation of the cur

Mechanisms underlying the health benefits of intermittent hypoxia conditioning.

Intermittent hypoxia (IH) is commonly associated with pathological conditions, particularly obstructive sleep apnoea. However, IH is also increasingly used to enhance health and performance and is emerging as a potent non-pharmacological intervention against numerous diseases. Whether IH is detrimental or beneficial for health is largely determined by the intensity, duration, number and frequency of the hypoxic exposures and by the specific responses they engender. Adaptive responses to hypoxia protect from future hypoxic or ischaemic insults, improve cellular resilience and functions, and boo

The clinical diagnosis and treatment of the shoulder terrible tetrad: a case report and literature review.

Traumatic anterior dislocation of the shoulder is often associated with anterior glenoid fracture or bankart injury. It can also be associated with rotator cuff injury, humeral greater tuberosity fracture, or brachial plexus injury. However, there are few clinical reports of all the above-mentioned injuries at the same time. We report a case of the left "Shoulder terrible tetrad." After closed reduction of the left shoulder dislocation, we performed one-stage arthroscopic massive rotator cuff repair (Chinese-Way technique) and anchor repair of the bony bankart injury. After 2 years follow-up,

[Anomalous left coronary artery origin from the pulmonary artery causing angina: Report of one case].

Anomalies of the origin of coronary arteries are detected in 0.5-1.5% of all angiographies. Anomalous origin of the left main trunk is the most uncommon and its origin from pulmonary artery in adults is exceptional, usually because it is associated with a short survival. We report a 49-year-old female, presenting with a two months history of angina. The exercise electrocardiogram suggested ischemia. A coronary angiography was performed, showing the absence of the left main trunk in the left coronary sinus, a dilated right coronary artery, with no lesions and extensive collateral circulation to

Urinary tract reconstruction in children undergoing renal transplantation.

In children, congenital urinary tract anomalies contribute to end-stage renal disease in 20% to 30% of cases. As more and more children with myelomeningocele, posterior urethral valves, prune belly syndrome, and other serious congenital anomalies of the urinary tract survive early infancy, more of these patients will be in need of renal transplantation. Of these, a significant proportion will have persisting abnormal anatomic and physiological characteristics of the urinary tract requiring reconstructive surgery before transplantation. Before undertaking these procedures, urologic evaluation s

[The Unique Challenges of Treating and Caring for Older Adult Patients With Cancer].

In older age, tissue degeneration, decreased cellular competition, and the declining efficiency of clearance mechanisms lead to higher rates of survival and accumulation for cells with adaptive mutations, which increase the risk of cancer cell development (Laconi et al., 2020). Thus, age is a significant risk factor for cancer. It is projected that by 2050, the global population aged 60 and above will rise to 2.1 billion, with those aged 80 and above expected to reach 426 million (World Health Organization, 2024). Taiwan, which became an aging society in 2018, is expected to be a nation in whi

Thermodynamics and Kinetics of CO2 Sorption and Water Remediation on Waste Polyurethane Foam-Derived Hybrids.

Converting waste into dual-function materials for both atmospheric and aqueous remediation remains a formidable challenge in realizing a circular economy. Here, we report a chemical upcycling strategy that transforms discarded polyurethane foam into a novel class of sorbents. We demonstrate that recovered waste oligomers can be fundamentally engineered into high-performance materials exhibiting a bifunctional capacity for atmospheric CO2 capture and rapid aqueous phenol removal. By chemically functionalizing polyurethane glycerolysate (GLC) with poly(allyl alcohol) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs),

Effects of Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticle Functionalization with Ionic Liquids and a Double-Chained Surfactant on the Pretreatment of Plasma Samples during Drug Extraction.

Ionic liquids (ILs), also known as "designer solvents," comprise a large group of compounds that can improve overall sample preparation performance due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Some of them have a comparable structure to surfactants, which can be also considered as effective extraction solvents. In this study, nine different ILs and a double-chained surfactant were investigated as potential coating materials for iron oxide-based nanoparticles (NPs) used in the pretreatment of human plasma samples. Various methods of synthesizing and functionalizing NPs were employed in

Progressive Spinal Kyphosis in the Aging Population.

Thoracic kyphosis tends to increase with age. Hyperkyphosis is defined as excessive curvature of the thoracic spine and may be associated with adverse health effects. Hyperkyphosis in isolation or as a component of degenerative kyphoscoliosis has important implications for the surgical management of adult spinal deformity. Our objective was to review the literature on the epidemiology, etiology, natural history, management, and outcomes of thoracic hyperkyphosis. We performed a narrative review of literature on thoracic hyperkyphosis and its implications for adult spinal deformity surgery. Hyp

What nutritional interventions can effectively treat sarcopenia in older adults with cancer? A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer primarily affects older adults, with a significant proportion also experiencing sarcopenia which is associated with poor clinical outcomes. In older adults with cancer, sarcopenia is not only age-related but also exacerbated by disease processes, inflammation, and the catabolic effects of treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Its presence is linked to increased treatment toxicity, longer hospitalisations, reduced physical function, and poorer survival rates. However, diagnosing sarcopenia remains challenging due to inconsistent criteria and limited access to di
