Symptomatic Vitamin and Nutrient Deficiencies of Autism Spectrum Disorder and the Potential for Treatment.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurobehavioral disorder. Children with ASD often have restrictive diets that can be due to food aversion, sensory sensitivities, ritualistic behavior, or comorbid gastrointestinal issues. Diet and nutritional status play a critical role in the health of neurodevelopment, and the microbiome, and can affect cognition, motor and sensory status, behavior, and sleep. Children with ASD are 5 times more likely to develop eating problems and secondary vitamin and nutritional deficiencies. Such dietary restriction has been causative of vitamin and nutr

A case study of acceptance and commitment therapy for central disorders of hypersomnolence: opportunities to improve patient-centered and comprehensive treatment approaches.

UNLABELLED: Beyond daytime sleepiness, central disorders of hypersomnolence (including narcolepsy types 1 and 2 and idiopathic hypersomnia) affect the fundamental aspects of everyday life, including mental health, negative self-esteem, relationships, social stigma, and occupational/school problems, all of which can lead to disability. Limited scientifically tested behavioral treatments designed to address the psychological, social, and economic devastation associated with hypersomnia exist. This case report reviews 1 patient's experience with 2 adjuvant interventions for central disorders of h

Latent-state and model-based learning in PTSD.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by altered emotional and behavioral responding following a traumatic event. In this article, we review the concepts of latent-state and model-based learning (i.e., learning and inferring abstract task representations) and discuss their relevance for clinical and neuroscience models of PTSD. Recent data demonstrate evidence for brain and behavioral biases in these learning processes in PTSD. These new data potentially recast excessive fear towards trauma cues as a problem in learning and updating abstract task representations, as opposed to

Case Report: Vitamin C combined with multiple micronutrient deficiencies is associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension in children with autistic spectrum disorder.

Children with developmental and behavioral problems including autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) may have inappropriate feeding behaviors, which leads to an increased risk of multiple nutrient deficiencies. Vitamin C deficiency is one of the common nutrient deficiencies reported in children with inappropriate feeding. This case report illustrates two cases of ASD children with a clinical presentation of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare presentation of vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C supplementation, pulmonary vasodilator, and supportive treatment were provided. Patients could recover fr

Slow segmentation of faces in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Atypical visual segmentation, affecting object perception, might contribute to face processing problems in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The current study investigated impairments in visual segmentation of faces in ASD. Thirty participants (ASD: 16; Control: 14) viewed texture-defined faces, houses, and homogeneous images, while electroencephalographic and behavioral responses were recorded. The ASD group showed slower face-segmentation related brain activity and longer segmentation reaction times than the control group, but no difference in house-segmentation related activity or behavioral

New Nursing Faculty and Incivility: Applying Mindfulness-Based Strategies.

Workplace incivility remains a problem within the nursing profession. As nurse leaders, we must recognize and not ignore the complexity of cultures that have adapted incivility into the work environment. Nursing education is a discipline that requires collaborative team work, independent drive, and commitment. New nursing faculty experiencing incivility can use mindfulness-based meditation approaches to cope with uncivil behaviors experienced within the workplace. Nurse educators applying the concepts of mindfulness can learn how to provide themselves self-care by reducing stress, as enhanced

Trauma and homelessness in youth: Psychopathology and intervention.

Youth runaway behavior and homelessness (RHY) in the U.S. is increasingly common, with prevalence estimated at 1-1.7 million youth. RHY have multiple, overlapping problems often including poor physical and mental health, frequent street victimization, and histories of physical and sexual abuse. Further, current street victimization interacts with childhood abuse to produce complex, unique presentations of traumatic symptoms and related disorders in runaway and homeless youth. This review paper explores (1) the role of childhood trauma in the genesis of runaway and homeless behavior, and (2) ho

Gambling Outcome Expectancies and Gambling Behavior Among African-American Adolescents: Gender as a Moderating Variable.

Most high school adolescents have reported past year gambling, and males gamble more frequently and problematically than females. Ethnic minority adolescents appear to be gambling at a higher rate than Caucasian adolescents. There is evidence indicating that adolescent gambling outcome expectancies are correlated with gambling behavior, but limited evidence that this relation differs by gender. In the present study gender was evaluated as a moderator in the relation between gambling outcome expectancies and gambling behaviors in an African-American high school sample. Males gambled more freque

[Dialectical-behavioral outpatient therapy for adolescents with impulsive and self-harming behavior].

A slightly modified version of the Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) for impulsive and self-injurious adolescents has been implemented in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Service in Zurich, Switzerland, since 2005. This DBT-A comprises individual therapy, skills training, and a single parent meeting over a 6-month period. This article reports on the translation of this approach into clinical practice and presents an evaluation based on the clinical quality of control assessments. Participants of the treatment program were 43 female adolescents aged 14 to 19 living in t

The role of early developmental intervention to influence neurobehavioral outcomes of children born preterm.

Children who are born preterm are at risk of adverse long-term neurobehavioral outcomes, including cognitive, motor, and behavioral impairments. Early developmental interventions that commence within the first year after preterm birth have a preventative focus, with the aim to positively influence the developmental trajectory. While there is a great deal of heterogeneity in the research trials to date, there is evidence that early developmental interventions have a moderate effect on cognitive and behavioral outcomes up to preschool age, with some evidence for improved motor outcomes. This rev

Extradural temporopolar approach for parahypothalamic hypothalamic hamartoma and use of posterior communicating artery as resection margin pointer.

BACKGROUND: Hypothalamic hamartomas (HH) are malformations originating from the hypothalamus and are associated with seizures, hormonal and behavioral abnormalities. METHOD: Most patients, especially those with a typical syndrome characterized by gelastic seizures, precocious puberty, cognitive decline, and behavior problems, are diagnosed in childhood. Pedunculated and parahypothalamic types of hamartomas are attached to the floor by a narrow or wide peduncle in the absence of distortion of the overlying hypothalamus. This location is most commonly associated with a clinical presentation of

The dysregulated cluster in personality profiling research: longitudinal stability and associations with bulimic behaviors and correlates.

Among cluster analytic studies of the personality profiles associated with bulimia nervosa, a group of individuals characterized by emotional lability and behavioral dysregulation (i.e., a dysregulated cluster) has emerged most consistently. However, previous studies have all been cross-sectional and mostly used clinical samples. This study aimed to replicate associations between the dysregulated personality cluster and bulimic symptoms and related characteristics using a longitudinal, population-based sample. Participants were females assessed at ages 17 and 25 from the Minnesota Twin Family

Addressing the mental health needs of pregnant and parenting adolescents.

Adolescent parenthood is associated with a range of adverse outcomes for young mothers, including mental health problems such as depression, substance abuse, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Teen mothers are also more likely to be impoverished and reside in communities and families that are socially and economically disadvantaged. These circumstances can adversely affect maternal mental health, parenting, and behavior outcomes for their children. In this report, we provide an overview of the mental health challenges associated with teen parenthood, barriers that often prevent teen mothers fr

Prevalence and correlates of truancy in the US: results from a national sample.

Truancy has been a persistent problem in the United States for more than 100 years. Although truancy is commonly reported as a risk factor for substance use, delinquency, dropout, and a host of other negative outcomes for youth, there has been surprisingly little empirical investigation into understanding the causes and correlates of truancy using large, nationally representative samples. Using the adolescent sample (N = 17,482) of the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), this study presents the prevalence of truancy and examines individual, school engagement, parental, and beh

Examination and validation of a measure of anxiety specific to children with autism spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Investigated the use of a combined scale (Worry/Depressed and Avoidant scales) from the Autism Spectrum Disorders-Comorbidity for Children (ASD-CC) as a measure of anxiety. Alternative methods of measuring anxiety were examined using the ASD-CC in an ASD population. METHODS: Participants included 147 children, age 2-16 years, evincing a mixture of behavior problems. Comparisons between scores on the ASD-CC and Behavior Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2) were examined to determine the most efficacious method of measuring anxiety and to establish convergent and d

Emotional, behavioral, and cognitive factors that differentiate obsessive-compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders in youth.

Abstract The current study examined specific emotional, behavioral, and cognitive variables that may distinguish obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social phobia (SoP), and separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in youth. Youth with OCD (n=26) and other anxiety disorders (ADs; n=31), aged 7-12 years (56.1% males), and their parents participated. The study compared the two anxious groups on levels of emotional, behavioral, and cognitive functioning, as well as impairment associated with the disorder. Results indicated that in comparison to youth with GAD, So

New evidence from the grey area: Danish results for at-risk gambling.

This study investigates the differences between at-risk gamblers and no-risk gamblers to provide a closer inspection of the characteristics and gambling behavior of at-risk gamblers. The data stem from the first Danish large-scale nationwide study, in 2005, followed by a second wave interview in 2006. The first wave sample consists of 4,932 current gamblers with no current gambling problems or pathology, and the second wave re-interviewed 379 of them. The analysis involves both a logistic regression and cross-tabulations. The results show that at-risk gamblers and no-risk gamblers have signifi

Increased levels of anxiety-related behaviors in a Tsc2 dominant negative transgenic mouse model of tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis (TSC) is a single-gene disorder caused by heterozygous mutations in the TSC1 or TSC2 gene. TSC is often associated with neurological (e.g., epilepsy), cognitive (intellectual disabilities, specific neuropsychological impairments) and behavioral pathologies (e.g., autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). In addition, there is a high prevalence of psychiatric problems in TSC populations, including anxiety and mood disorders. To date, little is known about the pathogenetic bases of these associated psychiatric symptoms; for instance, it is unclear whether they are roo
