OBJECT: Metastatic spinal tumors of the atlantoaxial region are quite uncommon, and surgery is challenging. The aim in this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of transoral or transpedicular vertebroplasty combined with posterior fixation in C-2 metastatic disease.
METHODS: The authors collected from a hospital database all cases of C-2 metastatic tumor treated in the period from January 2009 to December 2012. Cases with histologically confirmed metastatic disease were included, but those with epidural tumorous propagation and signs of spinal cord compression were excluded.

Intraspinal tumors are uncommon. Positive diagnosis is based on medical imaging exams, in particular MRI. Anatomopathological examination allows for definitive diagnosis. Surgery is the treatment of choice for most of them. Prognosis is related to the histological type and patient´s initial clinical condition. We here report the histological profile and progression of intraspinal tumors in our department. We conducted a retrospective study over a period of 10 years. All operated patients with histology-confirmed intraspinal tumor (23 cases) were enrolled. Four unworkable records were excluded.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous spinal epidural hematomas (SSEH) are rare yet severe conditions. In pregnancy, this condition is challenging to diagnose and treat because of the risks to the mother and fetus. This study reviews the literature on SSEHs in pregnancy.

On the experience of 73 patients, the authors state their guidelines on the treatment of bone metastases on the cervical spine. Most of the cases on which no vertebral collapse occur neither neurological deficit, radiation therapy and external support are suggested. Surgery is necessary on case of severe bone destruction, collapse with or without subsequent neurological impairment. Anterior excision is considered the best approach, sometimes complemented by posterior stabilisation.

A case of relapsed malignant tumor of the brachial plexus and its nervous roots (MPNST) was observed in a patient treated with radiotherapy for Hodgkin's disease 24 years previously. A known risk of radiation therapy is the induction of secondary neoplasms, less commonly malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). The clinico-pathological features of this rare tumor are presented and the possible relationship between radiotherapy and MPNST is discussed.
