Efficacy of a treatment program based on positive psychology for drug use in juvenile offenders.

One of the factors that increase the likelihood of adolescents starting to exhibit and consolidate anti-social behavior is drug use, with a consistent pattern of consumption of different substance found in young offenders (Aebi, Bessler & Steinhausen, 2021). A cognitive-behavioral group treatment program inspired by the positive psychology approach was developed and applied to drug use in minors deprived of liberty (experimental group); the results were compared to those of a group of adolescents with the same type of drug use in the same center (active control group) at two points in time: du

"It's time for a change. I need to. I have to": Substance misuse recovery turning points of unhoused Alaskans.

Substance misuse is a pernicious health concern for many unhoused people. A deep understanding of turning points - what propels someone to take concrete action toward addressing substance misuse - is needed to inform recovery policies and practices. This study sought to identify common elements in turning points among unhoused people vis-à-vis a phenomenological qualitative approach. Twenty people (Mage = 47.47, SD = 9.75; 50% female) who self-identified as being in recovery while unhoused participated in semi-structured interviews in Anchorage, Alaska, a community with high rates of both hous

Visualizing the Influence of Social Networks on Recovery: A Mixed-Methods Social Identity Mapping Study with Recovering Adolescents.

Background: Social recovery capital (SRC) refers to resources and supports gained through relationships and is vital to adolescent addiction recovery. Much is known about how substance use relates to social networks, but little is known about how other dimensions of social networks influence recovery (e.g., network size/exposure, degree of conflict). Methods: This mixed-methods study sampled 28 adolescents who received treatment for alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorder (14-19 yrs.: 71% male; M = 17.32 yrs., SD = 1.33; White 82%): 20 were recovery high school (RHS) students. "A little bit of hope goes a long way": Exploring the role of peer workers in alcohol and other drug rehabilitation services.

INTRODUCTION: Peer workers operating within health care settings can offer unique perspectives based on their own lived experience. Within alcohol and other drug (AOD) rehabilitation services, the potential value of peer work is becoming increasingly recognised. This qualitative study aimed to evaluate a newly implemented peer worker program located across three rehabilitation services in Tasmania, Australia. METHODS: Online interviews were conducted with eight clients, seven peer workers, and five non-peer worker employees with varied experience with peer worker programs. All interviews were

Longitudinal associations between adult-supervised drinking during adolescence and alcohol misuse from ages 25-31 years: A comparison of Australia and the United States.

Prior studies suggest that adult supervised drinking in adolescence predicts greater adolescent alcohol misuse. Long-term follow up data examining how adult supervised drinking during adolescence relates to alcohol misuse in adulthood are lacking. Longitudinal data from the International Youth Development Study tested associations between adult supervised drinking during adolescence (ages 13-16; 2002-2004) and adult alcohol misuse (ages 25-31; 2014, 2018, 2020). Cross-nationally matched samples were compared in Washington State, USA (n = 961) and Victoria, Australia (n = 1,957; total N = 2,918

Sex/gender differences in spontaneous reports to a French Addictovigilance centre.

To specify psychoactive substances and related complications observed in spontaneous reports (SRs) in women versus men, we assessed SRs on substance-linked acute toxicity sent to a French Addictovigilance centre. Over the period 2021-2022, 880 SRs were analysed (33.4% concerned women). Severe complications concerned more men than women (70.3% versus 59.5%; p = 0.0014). In women, the main implicated substances were psychoactive medications (opioids, benzodiazepines). The most frequently reported complication was suicidal behaviour (14.6% versus 7.8%, p = 0.002). In men, SRs concerned mainly ill

Systematic review and meta-analysis: Combining transcranial magnetic stimulation or direct current stimulation with pharmacotherapy for treatment of substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have evidence for their potential in the treatment of substance use disorders (SUD). Medication for addiction treatment (MAT) is underutilized and not always effective. We identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and case studies that evaluated the effectiveness of TMS or tDCS used concurrently with MAT in SUD treatment. METHODS: A systematic review of published literature following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines wa

Blocking IL-17A prevents oxycodone-induced depression-like effects and elevation of IL-6 levels in the ventral tegmental area and reduces oxycodone-derived physical dependence in rats.

Oxycodone is the most prescribed opioid for pain management and has been available in clinics for almost a century, but effects of chronic oxycodone have been studied less than morphine in preclinical and clinical studies. Newly developed depression has been coupled with chronic oxycodone use in a few clinical studies, but no preclinical studies have investigated the pathogenesis of oxycodone-induced depression. Gut microbiome changes following oxycodone use is an understudied area, and interleukin-17A (IL-17A) is linked to both the development of mood disorders and regulation of gut microbiom

[Misuse of OTC drugs as a public health problem - a case report of extreme severe hypokalaemia due to OTC drug therapy].

Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs taken as intended and according to medical advice are a safe form of disease control. In the public consciousness, they are regarded as harmless agents. Thus, there is a danger of insufficient knowledge about possible side effects, interactions with other drugs or the consequences of taking too high doses. The availability of OTC drugs and social acceptance of their use are sometimes the reason for their recreational use. This article describes the case of a female patient who presented to the emergency department with complaints such as significant weakness, deter

Brief Report: Substance Use Care Continuum in Women With and Without HIV in the Southern United States.

BACKGROUND: Substance use (SU) contributes to poor outcomes among persons living with HIV. Women living with HIV (WWH) in the United States are disproportionately affected in the South, and examining SU patterns, treatment, and HIV outcomes in this population is integral to addressing HIV and SU disparities. METHODS: WWH and comparable women without HIV (WWOH) who enrolled 2013-2015 in the Women's Interagency HIV Study Southern sites (Atlanta, Birmingham/Jackson, Chapel Hill, and Miami) and reported SU (self-reported nonmedical use of drugs) in the past year were included.
