Cannabis Use and Reduced Risk of Insulin Resistance in HIV-HCV Infected Patients: A Longitudinal Analysis (ANRS CO13 HEPAVIH).

BACKGROUND: Diabetes and insulin resistance (IR) is common in human immunodeficiency virus-hepatitis C virus (HIV-HCV)-coinfected patients, a population also concerned with elevated cannabis use. Cannabis has been associated with reduced IR risk in some population-based surveys. We determined whether cannabis use was consistently associated with reduced IR risk in HEPAVIH, a French nationwide cohort of HIV-HCV-coinfected patients. METHODS: HEPAVIH medical and sociobehavioral data were collected (using annual self-administered questionnaires). We used 60 months of follow-up data for patients w

Malaria research in the Greater Mekong Subregion: an overview.

The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) has low transmission of Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax and is a prime region for malaria elimination based on evidence. The extent of GMS based research is unknown. Pub Med-identified research articles from the GMS were selected based on defined criteria and classified into 24 research areas. A research questionnaire was sent to WHO country offices, national malaria control programs (NMCPs), national research institutes and non governmental organizations (NGOs). Two thousand eight hundred ninety of 3,319 identified publications were included, dating from

The 1981 United States survey of cardiac pacing practices.

A survey of physicians implanting pacemakers was conducted to obtain a profile of permanent cardiac pacing practices in the United States during 1981. Questionnaires were mailed to 5,832 implanters with 765 responses (13%) received and 680 analyzed. It was estimated that there were approximately 5,600 physicians, 66% surgeons and 34% nonsurgeons, implanting pacemakers at 3,670 centers. About 118,000 new primary implants were performed, or 518 per million population. Only 17% of implantation procedures in 1981 were replacements compared with 31% in 1978. Roughly half the respondents worked in t

Ejaculatory and erectile function outcomes following holmium laser enucleation of the prostate.

PURPOSE: Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is a surgical treatment option for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Many men develop retrograde ejaculation postprocedure, but there is conflicting evidence regarding sexual function outcomes post-HoLEP. We sought to examine significant variations in patient-reported erectile and ejaculatory function within 12 months post-HoLEP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study for patients who underwent HoLEP between Nov 2018 and Feb 2022. Of the reviewed patients, 277 patients met inclusion criteria and completed pre and
