Individual magnitudes of neural variability quenching are associated with motion perception abilities.

Remarkable trial-by-trial variability is apparent in cortical responses to repeating stimulus presentations. This neural variability across trials is relatively high before stimulus presentation and then reduced (i.e., quenched) ∼0.2 s after stimulus presentation. Individual subjects exhibit different magnitudes of variability quenching, and previous work from our lab has revealed that individuals with larger variability quenching exhibit lower (i.e., better) perceptual thresholds in a contrast discrimination task. Here, we examined whether similar findings were also apparent in a motion detec

Application of the theory of planned behavior with agent-based modeling for sustainable management of vegetative filter strips.

This study proposes an innovative socio-hydrological modeling framework for the development of environmental policies that are tailored to farmers' attitudes and economic interests but also optimize environmental criteria. From a farmers' on-site survey, a behavior model is developed based on a modified Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The dynamics of the social and environmental system is implemented by coupling an agent-based model (ABM) with an agro-hydrological model for vegetative filter strips (VFS). A case study is conducted with farmers from the Larqui river basin, Chile to understand

Venous Causes of Pulsatile Tinnitus: Clinical Presentation, Clinical and Radiographic Evaluation, Pathogenesis, and Endovascular Treatments: A Literature Review.

Tinnitus is an abnormal perception of a sound without external stimulation. Venous pulsatile tinnitus (VPT) is a specific form of tinnitus characterized by an objective and often subjective bruit that occurs as a result of localized venous abnormalities. Clinical evaluation relies on sound quality, duration, and precipitating factors. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and transverse sinus stenosis (TSS) are among the most common causes of VPT. Other causes include sigmoid sinus wall abnormalities (SSWAs), jugular vein anomalies (JVAs), and emissary veins anomalies. These anomalies can

Real-World Health-Economic Considerations Around Aortic-Valve Replacement in a Publicly Funded Health System.

Herein, we describe the unique interplay among biomedical ethics, principles of distributive justice, and economic theory to highlight the role of health technology assessments to compare therapeutic options for aortic valve replacement. From the perspective of the Canadian health care system, transcatheter aortic-valve implantation is associated with higher costs but also higher incremental health benefits compared with surgical aortic-valve replacement. At current willingness to pay thresholds, transcatheter aortic-valve replacement is likely cost effective across the spectrum of risk, from

Confinement on the optical response in h-BNCs: Towards highly efficient SERS-active 2D substrates.

Several experimental and theoretical studies have shown that 2D hybrid structures formed by boron, nitrogen and carbon atoms (h-BNCs) possess a highly tunable linear and non-linear optical responses. Recent advances towards the controlled synthesis of these unique structures have motivated an important number of experimental and theoretical work. In this work, the confinement on the optical response induced by boron-nitride (BN) strings in h-BNC 2D structures is investigated using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and electron density response properties. The number of surroundi

COVID-19 and cardiovascular disease: a review of current knowledge.

The uncontrolled spread of the COVID-19 pandemic which originated in China created a global turmoil. While the world is still busy figuring out a cure for the deadly disease, scientists worked out on many theories and conducted several studies to establish a relationship between the infection and other known diseases. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are one of the major complications of this infection after the respiratory manifestations. Individuals with cardiovascular complication are said to be more susceptible to acquiring the infection because the novel coronavirus uses the ACE2 receptor fo

Patient and provider perspectives on preterm birth risk assessment and communication.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare how obstetric patients and care providers view preterm birth risk assessment and communication. METHODS: We conducted eight focus groups with obstetric patients (n = 35) and 16 qualitative interviews with obstetric providers. Grounded theory was used to identify and analyze themes. RESULTS: Patients' knowledge about preterm birth varied greatly. Similar benefits and risks of preterm birth risk counseling were discussed by patients and providers with notable exceptions: patients cited preparedness as a benefit and providers cited maternal blame, patient alie

Subarachnomegaly-venous congestion of infancy.

PURPOSE: Multiple names within the literature refer to a clinical picture affecting infants and consisting of a large or fast growing head circumference with enlarged cortical subarachnoid spaces (CSAS) while cranial sutures are open. This myriad of terms demonstrates the confusion about the entity, that may even group together different etiological processes. In this review, we aim to shed light on this matter in an effort to restate the defining features of the clinical picture and sum the evidence and current understanding of its pathophysiology and related imaging findings. Directed Connectivity Analysis of the Brain Network in Mathematically Gifted Adolescents.

The neurocognitive characteristics of mathematically gifted adolescents are characterized by highly developed functional interactions between the right hemisphere and excellent cognitive control of the prefrontal cortex, enhanced frontoparietal cortex, and posterior parietal cortex. However, it is still unclear when and how these cortical interactions occur. In this paper, we used directional coherence analysis based on Granger causality to study the interactions between the frontal brain area and the posterior brain area in the mathematical frontoparietal network system during deductive reaso

Attention capture outside the oculomotor range.

Neurophysiological studies have demonstrated that attentional orienting is associated with activity in fronto-parietal brain areas that play a pivotal role in oculomotor control, such as the lateral intraparietal cortex (LIP), the frontal eye fields (FEF), and the superior colliculus (SC) (e.g., [1]). Accordingly, based on the influential premotor theory of attention, which posits that even covert shifts of spatial attention in the absence of eye movements are elicited by preceding activation in the oculomotor system [2], it has been claimed that attention can only be allocated to where we can

Host Gene Expression of Macrophages in Response to Feline Coronavirus Infection.

Feline coronavirus is a highly contagious virus potentially resulting in feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), while the pathogenesis of FIP remains not well understood, particularly in the events leading to the disease. A predominant theory is that the pathogenic FIPV arises from a mutation, so that it could replicate not only in enterocytes of the intestines but also in monocytes, subsequently systemically transporting the virus. The immune status and genetics of affected cats certainly play an important role in the pathogenesis. Considering the importance of genetics and host immune response

A new therapeutic approach for the Dry Eye Syndrome in patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux: first data.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a common disorder. Pepsin has been detected also at eye level, this was a starting point for newest theories about LPR impact on Dry Eye Syndrome. The current preliminary study compared two treatments in patients with Dry Eye Syndrome and LPR. Patients were treated with Gastroftal eye drops and Gastroftal tablets or hyaluronic acid eye drops for 3 months. The following parameters were evaluated: Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), OSDI categories, Reflux Symptom Index (RSI), Reflux Finding Score (RFS), Fluorescein Tear Breakup Time (B-TUT), and Schirmer test

Is the Host Viral Response and the Immunogenicity of Vaccines Altered in Pregnancy?

The intricacy of the maternal immune system arises from its ability to prevent a maternal immune response against a semi-allogenic fetus, while protecting the mother against harmful pathogens. However, these immunological adaptations may also make pregnant women vulnerable to developing adverse complications from respiratory viral infections. While the influenza and SARS pandemics support this theory, there is less certainty regarding the clinical impact of SARS-CoV-2 in pregnancy. In the current COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine development is key to public preventative strategies. Whilst most viral

Electronic Modulation in Site-Selective Occupation of Quasi-2D Triangular-Lattice Cs2CuCl4-xBrx Perovskite Probed by Surface-Sensitive Characterization.

A controllable electronic manipulation in a frustrated magnetic system such as solution-based two-dimensional (2D) all-inorganic perovskites offers a possible route for their integrations with electronic and magnetic devices for their advanced applications. Here, we perform element-specific investigations of an emergent class of quasi-2D all-inorganic perovskites Cs2CuCl4-xBrx with (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) using a combination of synchrotron-radiation photoelectron techniques. Surface- and element-sensitive X-ray absorption spectroscopy spectra of Cu L2,3 edges indicate strong electronic transition that is

Spectroscopic, Theoretical and Antioxidant Study of 3d-Transition Metals (Co (II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) Complexes with Cichoric Acid.

Cichoric acid (CA) is a derivative of both caffeic acid and tartaric acid. It was isolated for the first time from Cichorium intybus L. (chicory) but it also occurs in significant amounts in Echinacea, particularly E. purpurea, dandelion leaves, basil, lemon balm and in aquatic plants, including algae and sea grasses. It has a wide spectrum of biological properties, including antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and other. The work yielded cichoric acid complexes with selected transition metals, i.e., copper(II), nickel(II), zinc(II) and cobalt(II). In this work the dependency between the

[Health policies, a transdisciplinary field of study].

Nowadays, proposing policies or recommendations regarding intervention requires recognizing that our health policies aim to resolve health conditions caused by extreme poverty and inequity in different styles and living conditions. It is necessary to unveil the interests of actors closer to efficiency than to health equity, in scenarios of inequality that are made evident through gradients in health among disadvantaged populations of our country. Health policy analyzes require integrating measurement, description and political participation with recognition policies in a health context, genera

Can arterial elasticity be estimated from heart rate variability response to paced 0.066 Hz sighing?

Arterial elasticity is an important indicator of risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is influenced by both gradual vessel wall damage due to aging and disease and vascular tone that responds, at the moment, to system loading. Measuring changes in arterial elasticity are critical to early detection of CVD but can be time and resource intensive. This study proposes and tests a new method to approximate arterial elasticity from heart rate variability (HRV). ECG and pulse were simultaneously recording in 71 young healthy adults during three rhythmical sighing tasks paced at 0.02, 0.033, and
