Repair of a Large Congenital Peritoneopericardial Diaphragmatic Hernia with Canine Small Intestinal Submucosa Patch Reinforcement in a Dog: A Case Report.

Peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) is a congenital anomaly allowing communication between the peritoneal and pericardial cavities. Surgical repair of large diaphragmatic defects can be challenging due to insufficient tissue for primary closure. A 2-year-old intact female White Miniature Schnauzer weighing 6.23 kg presented with a 1-month history of panting and exercise intolerance. Thoracic radiography, ultrasonography, echocardiography, and CT confirmed PPDH with herniation of the left medial and quadrate liver lobes into the pericardial sac. Surgical repair via midline celiotom

[Frecuency of Bordetella pertussis infection in adults: a multicenter study in Argentina].

INTRODUCTION: The epidemiology of Bordetella pertussis (Bp) has changed following universal pediatric vaccination, with an increase in cases among adolescents and adults, who may have a higher risk of complications and behave as a reservoir for infection in infants. Reported prevalence in adults ranges from 2% to 32% worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of Bp infection in adults with cough in Argentina. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, multicenter, observational cross-sectional study conducted between August 2023 and August 2024, including individuals age

Does Time Truly Heal All? A Prospective Cohort Study of 6- To 12-Month Recovery Transitions After Traumatic Injury.

BACKGROUND: Recovery after traumatic injury may extend beyond conventional follow-up, but longer-term changes in function, quality of life (QoL), and return to work (RTW) remain incompletely characterized. STUDY DESIGN: English- or Spanish-speaking patients with Injury Severity Score ≥9 from three US Level I trauma centers completed telephone surveys 6 and 12 months after injury. Recovery was characterized as improved, stable, or declined between timepoints. Function was assessed across six Trauma Quality of Life domains; QoL and RTW by self-report; and mental health using GAD-7, PHQ-8, and B

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Val66Met Polymorphism and Cognitive Outcome after Stroke: A Systematic Review.

Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a common and disabling consequence of stroke. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays important roles in neuroplasticity, and the BDNF Val66Met (rs6265) polymorphism may alter cognitive outcomes after stroke; however, evidence remains inconsistent. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Observational studies involving adults with stroke that evaluated the association between BDNF Val66Met and post-stroke cognitive outcomes were included. Two reviewers independently screened studies; one reviewer extracted and another verified the data.

Patient- and caregiver-reported barriers to radiotherapy for cancer in sub-Saharan Africa-A survey of population-based registries.

Although radiotherapy is an essential part of comprehensive cancer care, access is heavily limited in most sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. Patients' barriers to care can be grouped as availability, accessibility, accommodation, affordability, and acceptability. We aimed to assess cancer patient- and caregiver-reported barriers in nine SSAn countries (Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe). We conducted a telephone-based survey among 553 randomly selected patients with breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancer, Kaposi sarcoma a

Therapeutic Patient Education in Adults with Chronic Lower Limb Musculoskeletal Pain: A Scoping Review.

Background: Conservative treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain includes exercise, manual therapy, medications, physical agents/modalities, and Therapeutic Patient Education (TPE). Research on TPE has predominantly focused on spinal pain, so we do not know the extent and scope of clinical research in other areas, particularly lower extremities. This review aimed to map current research on this topic. Methods: We searched PubMed, PEDro, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library up to 1 April 2024. We included RCTs on adults with chronic lower limb musculoskeletal pain, written in English, Frenc

Frailty is associated with poorer health-related quality of life among adult heart transplant recipients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty has recognized prognostic value in cardiovascular disease, but its relationship with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after heart transplantation remains poorly characterized in middle-income settings. This study evaluated frailty and HRQoL among adult heart transplant survivors. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of adult heart transplant recipients at a national referral center in Colombia. HRQoL was assessed using the EuroQol 5-Dimension 3-Level instrument, and frailty was evaluated using a self-reported FRAIL scale administered by telephone. Partici

Pharmacist-Led Discharge Counseling and Adherence to Postpartum Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis: A Pre-Post Observational Study.

BackgroundVenous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, during postpartum period. It may be mitigated through pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. However, adherence to prevention measures and patient education remain critical to optimizing outcomes.MethodsA pre-post observational study. The pre-intervention (PRE) phase was a retrospective review of postnatal women receiving pharmacological prophylaxis without counseling (January-December 2024), in the post-intervention (POST) phase eligible women received standardized pharmacist-led dis

Strength-Based Exercise Is Not Associated With Ventricular Arrhythmia in Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy-Towards Safer Exercise Options.

BACKGROUND: Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a genetic heart disorder characterized by fibrofatty replacement of ventricular myocardium, sustained ventricular arrhythmia (VA), and elevated risk of sudden death. Current guidelines restrict high-intensity aerobic exercise and competitive sports in individuals with ACM or at risk due to pathogenic/likely-pathogenic (P/LP) gene variants; however, the impact of strength-based exercise is poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to evaluate the risk of VA in individuals with ACM and/or P/LP ACM gene variants exposed to strength-based

Long-term weight maintenance after a low-carbohydrate diet: a real-world retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) promotes short-term weight loss in individuals with overweight or obesity, but long-term maintenance remains uncertain, particularly in real-world settings. This study aimed to identify predictors of weight regain following a short-term LCD intervention in a hospital-based weight management program. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult individuals with overweight or obesity (BMI ≥ 24 kg/m²) who underwent an LCD between July 2016 and July 2020. Baseline anthropometric and metabolic data were extracted from medical records, and follow-u

Development of a perinatal trauma screening tool: Detecting the silent struggle of perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Universal screening for perinatal mental illness is recommended in Australia; however, these tools do not screen for perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While existing perinatal PTSD tools show validity, they vary in diagnostic agreement, and most are focused on PTSD following childbirth. Early detection of PTSD symptoms at any phase of perinatal care is critical to improve maternal/infant outcomes and engagement with effective treatment. Unfortunately, gaps remain in practice for identifying perinatal PTSD. AIM: The aim of the study was to develop a screening tool to

Long COVID sequelae in heart transplant recipients.

Post acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (also known as Long COVID) have been defined as symptoms that persist after 3 months from initial acute episode of COVID-19. While the pathophysiology and mechanisms that cause Long COVID are hypothesized as secondary to persistent inflammation and immune dysregulation, the burden of this disease remains difficult to estimate due to varied symptomatology. Solid-organ transplant recipients in particular remain a vulnerable population that has been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of Long COVID among orthotopic heart

Not a Child, Not Yet an Adult: Transition Experiences in Pediatric Transplant Recipients.

OBJECTIVES: The transition from pediatric to adult health care services is a critical milestone for adolescents who have undergone solid -organ transplant. Despite medical advances, this period remains a vulnerable one due to changes in care structures, patient autonomy, and psychosocial challenges. Qualitative evidence exploring this transition experience is limited in the context of Turkish health care. In this study, we examined the lived experiences, perceptions, and expectations of adolescents and young adults who underwent pediatric kidney or liver transplant in Türkiye, with a specific
