A 34-year-old woman presented with progressive visual impairment for 2 months. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a suprasellar cyst. The patient underwent endoscopic endonasal surgery, which resulted in gross total resection with a diagnosis of craniopharyngioma. Postoperatively, the patient's visual function improved. The constructive interference steady-state (CISS) sequence revealed a remarkable resolution of hyperintense areas in the swollen optic nerve and tract. A 36-year-old woman sustained an abrupt visual loss. She had been diagnosed with cavernous malf

INTRODUCTION: A number of ophthalmic abnormalities, including optic disc edema, have been reported in several astronauts involved in long-duration spaceflights. An increased understanding of factors contributing to this syndrome, initially designated visual impairment and intracranial pressure syndrome and recently renamed spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome, has become a high priority for ESA and NASA, especially in view of future long-duration missions, including trips to Mars. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of this syndrome are still not well understood. In the presen

PURPOSE: Fracture of the frontal bone can be accompanied by damage to the optic canal. The present study uses finite element analysis to identify fracture patterns, suggesting the involvement of the optic canal.
METHODS: Ten finite-element skull models were generated from computer tomography data of 10 persons. Then, dynamic analyses simulating collision of a 2-cm-radius brass ball to 6 regions on the frontal bone in the 10 models were performed. Fracture patterns presented by the frontal bone in the 60 experiments were observed, and all those involving the optic canal were selected. Commonal

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve head drusen was recognized histologically in 1858 by Heinrich Muller The majority of optic nerve head drusen cases have been benign in nature. However, optic nerve head drusen can be visually devastating.
CASE REPORTS: Two patients were diagnosed with optic nerve head drusen. They were similar in age and each had a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 OU. Although the diagnosis was the same, the disease affected each person very differently. One is currently asymptomatic; the other is legally blind secondary to severely constricted visual fields. These cases demonstra

Dendritic cells are antigen-presenting cells that play essential roles in immunity and initiate immune reactions in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models. Dendritic cell recruitment was quantified in the optic nerve and retina after inducing the EAE model, and the correlation between functional and structural damage to the optic nerve and retina was determined. EAE was induced in female C57BL/6 mice by injecting murine myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein 35-55. All 20 mice were sacrificed sequentially. The dendritic cell infiltration level was analyzed using flow cytometry and

We describe a teenage boy with gradually progressive blurred vision in right eye. He could appreciate hand motions in the right eye and 20/20 vision in the left eye. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilateral optic atrophy with yellow-white peri-papillary lesion in the right eye. Computed Tomography (CT) brain and orbit showed choroidal, optic nerve and intracranial calcifications. The Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed the calcification selectively involved the optic nerve sheath with no abnormal hyperintensity or enhancement of the optic nerve substance, suggestive of a bilateral optic ne

Choroidal nodules in neurofibromatosis type-1 are common and are best imaged with near-infrared reflectance (NIR) imaging. The authors describe swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SSOCTA) of choroidal nodules. These nodules are seen as hyperflow areas on SSOCTA and correlate well to bright patches on NIR imaging. The utility of multicolor scanning laser imaging in detecting these abnormalities is also described.

A 34-year-old man was admitted after an episode of aborted sudden cardiac death. The initial investigation including electrocardiogram, chest x-ray, transthoracic echocardiogram, and biomarkers were normal. Although coronary angiography showed nonsevere stenosis, optical coherence tomography revealed severe obstruction in the artery with a layered appearance of the vessel wall; it was consistent with the presence of mural thrombus.

Premacular retrohyaloid hemorrhage is a rare complication of acute severe anemia. The authors report two cases of premacular hemorrhage in which no treatment other than clinical and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography observation was performed. The natural history of this condition reveals that complete clinical resolution is not accompanied by full anatomical restoration. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina. 2014;45:E5-E7.].

CLINICAL CASE: A 5 year-old child diagnosed with moderate anisometropic amblyopia secondary to primary cyst of iris pigment epithelium. He was evaluated with ultrasound biomicroscopy (BMU) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) of anterior segment.
DISCUSSION: The OCT, although with some limitations, is a useful tool to study the anterior segment. It is probably more recommendable than BMU in the childhood.

BACKGROUND: Vascular inflammation has been recognized as one of the key factors in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) attenuation by computed tomography angiography has emerged as a marker specific for coronary artery inflammation. We examined the relationship between clinical presentation and coronary artery inflammation assessed by PCAT attenuation and coronary plaque characteristics.
METHODS: Patients with ACS or stable angina pectoris (SAP) who underwent preintervention coronary computed tomography angiography and optical coherence tomog

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggested that perivascular components, such as perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) and adventitial vasa vasorum (VV), play an important role as a source of various inflammatory mediators in cardiovascular disease.
OBJECTIVES: The authors tested their hypothesis that coronary artery spasm is associated with perivascular inflammation in patients with vasospastic angina (VSA) using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT).
METHODS: This study prospectively examined 27 consecutive VSA patients with acetylcholine-induced

The aim of this study was to compare optic canal parameters of syndromic craniosynostosis patients with those of normal patients to visit the possibility of optic nerve impingement as a cause of visual impairment. Computed tomography scan images were processed using the Materialise Interactive Medical Image Control System (MIMICS) Research 21.0 software (Materialise NV, Leuven, Belgium). Eleven optic canal parameters were measured: 1) height of optic canal on the cranial side, 2) height of optic canal on the orbital side 3) length of the medial wall of the optic canal, 4) length of the lateral

BACKGROUND: There are various imaging techniques for the assessment of the optic disc in glaucoma patients. However, anatomically conspicuous, large or small optic discs can be quite challenging for an examiner.
OBJECTIVE: The Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is a modern approach for the quantitative measures of retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL). The study focuses on comparison analysis of the BMO method and the widely used Heidelberg retina tomograph (HRT) method - in terms of detection of glaucoma for different optic disc sizes.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures of brain atrophy are often considered to be a marker of axonal loss in multiple sclerosis (MS) but evidence is limited. Optic neuritis is a common manifestation of MS and results in optic nerve atrophy. Retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) imaging is a non-invasive way of detecting axonal loss following optic neuritis. We hypothesise that if the optic nerve atrophy that develops following optic neuritis is contributed to by axonal loss, it will correlate with thinning of the RNFL. Twenty-five patients were studied at least 1 year after a single unilateral
