Rapid Bone Healing after Intentional Replantation of a Molar with Apical Actinomycosis.

Actinomycosis is a rare lesion of the jaws and may present as periapical pathosis; therefore, it is essential to be correctly diagnosed and managed. This case presentation describes management of a tooth with a symptomatic apical periodontitis caused by Actinomyces species supplemented with medicine prescription. A woman was referred for endodontic management of tooth #19. The tooth had a history of previous nonsurgical endodontic retreatment. Clinically, the tooth was very sensitive to percussion. Radiographic evaluation showed a large periapical lesion. Intentional replantation (IR) was plan

The incidence of impacted wisdom teeth in a Saudi community.

The wisdom tooth is the last permanent tooth to erupt into the oral cavity. Its eruption, however, can be impeded and the tooth may become impacted. The incidence of such a condition may be influenced by local as well as racial factors. In this article, an attempt was made to establish the incidence of impacted wisdom teeth in a small sample of the Saudi population.

Vital root resection with regenerative retrograde vital pulp therapy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Vital root resection is a surgical procedure that involves the selective removal of a root of a multi-rooted tooth to preserve the remaining tooth structure and pulp, maintaining the vitality and function of the tooth. When combined with regenerative retrograde vital pulp therapy (rVPT), it may offer a less invasive and more cost-effective alternative to traditional root resection methods. The purpose of this article is to report the techniques and outcomes of vital root resection and rVPT for the periodontally involved fractured mesiobuccal (MB) root in a maxillary first molar. M

Dilated Composite Odontoma in a Mesiodens.

Dilated Composite Odontoma also known as Dens invaginatus, "dens in dente", or "tooth within tooth" is a rare dental anomaly resulting from enamel organ infolding during tooth development, often leading to complications like caries and pulp infection. With a prevalence of 7.45%, it commonly affects upper lateral incisors, predominantly as a Type I morphology. Mesiodens, a supernumerary tooth in the anterior maxillary midline, occurs in 89.7% of single cases and 10.3% of bilateral cases. The coexistence of dens invaginatus in a mesiodens is extremely rare, posing diagnostic and treatment challe

Spontaneous Eruption of Permanent Teeth That Had Eruption Disturbances After Extirpation of Odontomas: A Report of Two Cases.

Odontomas, often found adjacent to impacted teeth, are tumors of abnormal tissue morphology arising from the tooth germ and are usually asymptomatic. They are often found by accident on X-ray images, and the eruption of permanent teeth is often caused by odontomas. In most cases, the tooth is extracted with the permanent tooth or orthodontic treatment is performed after extraction. However, the criteria are not clear. We encountered two cases of dental eruption in which permanent teeth, which originally seemed to be suitable for orthodontic treatment, spontaneously erupted after odontoma remov

Case Report: Endodontic management of a fused maxillary lateral incisor and canine with split.

BACKGROUND: Dental fusion, characterized by the joining of two neighboring tooth germs during odontogenesis, is an uncommon condition affecting approximately 0.1% of the permanent dentition. The unusual anatomy of the pulp chamber and the unpredictable root canal system pose significant challenges during endodontic treatment. CASE REPORT: A 47-year-old female patient presented with a 6-month history of spontaneous nocturnal pain in the upper left anterior region. Clinical examination revealed a solitary tooth occupying the positions of teeth 22 and 23; the tooth had a buccal groove and severe

Resilience of the replacing dentition in adult reptiles.

The dentition is critical to animal survival and teeth are present in modern vertebrates including teleost fish, sharks, amphibians, mammals and reptiles. The developmental processes that give rise to teeth are not just preserved through evolution but also share high level of similarity with the embryogenesis of other ectodermal organs. In this review we go beyond the embryonic phase of tooth development to life-long tooth replacement. We will address the origins of successional teeth, the location of putative tissue-resident stem cells, how de novo tooth formation continues throughout life an

Histological evidence for a dynamic dental battery in hadrosaurid dinosaurs.

The first histological study of an entire hadrosaurid dental battery provides a comprehensive look at tooth movement within this complex structure. Previous studies have focused on isolated teeth, or in-situ batteries, but this is the first study to examine an entire dental battery of any dinosaur. The absence of direct tooth-to-tooth contact across the entire battery and a unique arrangement of the dental tissues in hadrosaurids led us to compare their teeth with the ever-growing incisors of mammals. The similarity in the distributions of tissues along the incisor, coupled with continuous eru

Correcting Mucogingival Deformities at the Time of Extraction for a Future Implant Site: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Existing soft tissue deformities around a tooth planned for extraction and replacement with a dental implant may jeopardize the esthetic and physiologic outcome of any dental implant treatment. If soft tissue deformities can be prevented, minimized, or corrected at the time of tooth extraction for the future implant site and the adjacent teeth, more predictable outcomes with superior esthetics and health can be accomplished along with fewer surgical visits. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a patient who presented with mucogingival deformities around a tooth schedule

Effect of cytokines on osteoclast formation and bone resorption during mechanical force loading of the periodontal membrane.

Mechanical force loading exerts important effects on the skeleton by controlling bone mass and strength. Several in vivo experimental models evaluating the effects of mechanical loading on bone metabolism have been reported. Orthodontic tooth movement is a useful model for understanding the mechanism of bone remodeling induced by mechanical loading. In a mouse model of orthodontic tooth movement, TNF-α was expressed and osteoclasts appeared on the compressed side of the periodontal ligament. In TNF-receptor-deficient mice, there was less tooth movement and osteoclast numbers were lower than in

Under your nose: a rare finding during dissection provides insights into maxillary supernumerary teeth.

BACKGROUND: A supernumerary tooth was found during anatomical dissection. The position of this tooth, still impacted in the maxilla, and the associated pathology make this a rare case. METHODS: During dissection by dental students of the sagittally-sectioned head of a cadaver, a supernumerary tooth was identified in the mid-palatal area. Further dissection revealed a swelling with a thin bony covering related to the crown of the tooth. The maxilla was removed en bloc and radiographic examination, CT scanning, electron microscopy and histology were undertaken. RESULTS: The tooth had a crenula

Oral malodor associated with internal resorption.

We report a case of oral malodor associated with internal resorption. A 39-year-old male attended our hospital complaining of oral malodor. Utilizing organoleptic measurement, the halimeter test and gas chromatography, it was diagnosed as a strong halitosis caused by oral origin. The pocket probing depth of tooth 21 was 10 mm, and X-ray examination revealed a vertical bone loss around this tooth. The patient had received periodontal treatment at two dental offices previously, but the periodontal conditions and oral malodor persisted. We performed an initial periodontal preparation, however a d

Schizodontic Molarization of Mandibular Premolars: A Case Report of Gemination.

BACKGROUND: Tooth gemination is a single enlarged or joined tooth with a normal tooth count when the anomalous tooth is counted as one. Mandibular second premolars show an elevated variability of crown morphology. Only nine cases of isolated second premolar macrodontia have been reported in the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report presents the clinical and radiographic findings and conservative treatment of an atypical and rare case of localized bilateral molarization of mandibular second premolars. CONCLUSION: Dental professionals should acquire deeper knowledge about anomalies an

Equine Dental Floating (Crown Osontoplasty).

Odontoplasty (floating and occlusal equilibration) is the most commonly performed procedure in equine dentistry. From an anatomic perspective, an irregular occlusal surface, prominent cingula, transverse ridges, and enamel points all contribute to the function, form, and longevity of the equine cheek tooth. With limited reserve crown available and an average functional life range between 18 and 25 years, removal of tooth structure should be conservative. The authors consider a quality oral examination to be the most important dental procedure performed in the horse. Individual tooth evaluation

Delayed partial pulpotomy in a midroot and complicated crown-root-fractured permanent incisor with hyperplastic pulpitis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of multiple injuries of the same tooth is extremely rare. This case report describes the treatment in a midroot and complicated crown-root-fractured permanent incisor that remained untreated for 4 years after the accident. METHODS: The tooth was treated by delayed partial pulpotomy using calcium hydroxide. RESULTS: At the 3-year follow-up after treatment, the tooth was still vital and functional without any clinical and radiographic signs and symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: A young permanent tooth with hyperplastic pulpitis caused by trauma has a great inherent defensive

Three-Dimensionally Printed Individual Drill Sleeve for Depth-Controlled Sections in Third Molar Surgery.

During surgical third molar removal and coronectomy procedures, tooth sectioning is an important and, in some cases, an inferior alveolar nerve-endangering step. This article introduces a drilling sleeve that was printed according to the individual tooth-sectioning situation preoperatively, using diagnostic cone-beam computed tomography data. Not only did the sleeve function in our case as a mark on the drill; it was also a reliable physical limiter, serving as a determinant of the required depth during tooth sectioning. This fast and cost-effectively produced drilling sleeve may help younger

Palatogingival groove mimicking as a mutilated root fracture in a maxillary lateral incisor: a case report.

This article presents a case of a palatogingival groove (PPG) in tooth No. 12 that was misdiagnosed as a mutilated root fracture. A PPG is a developmental anomaly that predisposes a tooth to a severe periodontal defect. The initial diagnosis of mutilated root fracture on tooth No. 12 was made solely from radiographs that showed a vertical and horizontal radiolucent line with a radiolucent halo-shaped bone resorption in relation to the root apex. Transillumination, bite test, surgical visualization of the site, and the use of high-end diagnostic modalitieswere not considered prior to the final
