Over the past decade, abnormalities have been documented in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in west-central Montana. Hypotheses proposed to explain these anomalies included contact with endocrine disrupting pesticides, such as imidacloprid. We evaluated the effects of imidacloprid experimentally at the South Dakota State University Wildlife and Fisheries Captive Facility where adult white-tailed deer females and their fawns were administered aqueous imidacloprid (an untreated control, 1,500 ng/L, 3,000 ng/L, and 15,000 ng/L). Water consumption, thyroid hormone function, behavioral r

Antenatal administration of betamethasone (BM) is a common antecedent of preterm birth, but there is limited information about its impact on the acute evolution of preterm neonatal brain injury. We aimed to compare the effects of maternal BM in combination with mechanical ventilation on the white matter (WM) of late preterm sheep. At 0.85 of gestation, pregnant ewes were randomly assigned to receive intra-muscular (i.m.) saline (n = 9) or i.m. BM (n = 13). Lambs were delivered and unventilated controls (UVCSal, n = 4; UVCBM, n = 6) were humanely killed without intervention; ventilated lambs (V

Unlike white adipose tissue (WAT), brown adipose tissue (BAT) is mainly responsible for energy expenditure via thermogenesis by uncoupling the respiratory chain. Promoting the differentiation of brown fat precursor cells and the browning of white fat have become a research hotspot for the treatment of obesity and associated metabolic diseases. Several secreted factors and a number of small molecules have been found to promote brown adipogenesis. Here we report that a single small-molecule compound, RepSox, is sufficient to induce adipogenesis from mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) in fibrobla

Alcohol-related white matter (WM) microstructural changes have not been fully elucidated in adolescents. We aimed to investigate influences of subclinical alcohol use during adolescence on WM microstructure and to characterize those with serum metabolic alterations. 35 moderate-to-heavy drinkers (15 males, 20 females) and 27 controls (12 males, 15 females) were selected based on their ten-year Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test scores measured at three time points. Magnetic resonance imaging was conducted at endpoint time. Whole brain analysis of fractional anisotropy (FA) was performed

OBJECTIVE: Detection and pattern analysis of fascicular nerve hyperintensities in the T2-weighted image are the backbone of magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) as they may represent lesions of various etiologies. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of fascicular nerve hyperintensities in healthy individuals with regard to a potential association with age or cerebral white matter lesions.
METHODS: Sixty volunteers without peripheral nerve diseases between the age of 20 and 80 underwent MRN (high-resolution T2-weighted) of upper (median, ulnar, radial) and lower (sciatic, tibial

White piedra is a superficial fungal infection of the hair shaft, caused by Trichosporon, a noncandidal yeast characterized by the presence of numerous, discrete, asymptomatic nodules attached to the infected hair shafts. White piedra is considered a disease of tropical regions and occasionally reported from temperate countries. Although Candida parapsilosis such as Candida albicans is well known to cause cutaneous infections, it has been reported as a co-isolate for white piedra along with Trichosporon. We report a case of white piedra from a temperate region caused by C. parapsilosis.

This study examined the hypothesis that a fronto-temporal disconnection in the language network underpins formal thought disorder (FTD) in schizophrenia. Forty-nine patients with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (27 with mild FTD, 22 with severe FTD) and 26 healthy controls (HC) were included. Overall psychopathology and FTD were assessed by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale and the Thought, Language, and Communication scale, respectively. White matter (WM) microstructure was analysed using Tract-Based Spatial Statistics. In patients, severity of overall FTD (TLC Sum Score) was predict

The ability of seeing with the mind's eye, the visual mental imagery, is peculiarly compromised in patients with representational neglect. Representational neglect affects the processing of the left side of a mental image and may selectively concern the ability to imagine places and/or objects. Right-brain damaged patients with representational neglect for places (RN+) lose the ability to imagine themselves within a familiar place and fail in transforming an egocentric representation of the environment into an allocentric one and vice-versa. OBJECTIVE: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a neurodegenerative disorder with progressive motor and autonomic dysfunction. There is a paucity of information on the early neurostructural changes in MSA, especially its subtypes, MSA-P (patients with predominant parkinsonism) and MSA-C (patients with predominant cerebellar signs). This study investigates the abnormalities of grey matter (GM) and white matter (WM) in early MSA and its subtypes using multi-modal voxel-based analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients with MSA with duration of symptoms ≤ 2.5 years (mean duration: 1.6 ±0.9

Objective- Lp(a) [lipoprotein(a)] levels vary by race/ethnicity and were recently found to be associated with risk of heart failure (HF). We aimed to determine whether Lp(a)-related risk of HF is similar across different races and whether Lp(a) may further be related to HF with reduced ejection fraction or HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Approach and Results- In 6809 participants of the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis), aged 45 to 84 years and free of cardiovascular disease, 308 incident HF events occurred during a median 13-year follow-up. Baseline Lp(a) concentration

OBJECTIVE: Gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) are vulnerable to ischemic-edematous insults after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The extent of secondary insult after brain injury is quantifiable using quantitative CT analysis. One conventional quantitative CT measure, the gray-white matter ratio (GWR), and a more recently proposed densitometric analysis are used to assess the extent of these insults. However, the prognostic capacity of the GWR in patients with TBI has not yet been validated. This study aims to test the prognostic value of the GWR and evaluate the alternative parameters deriv

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether completeness of the circle of Willis (CoW) protected patients with severe internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis against white matter hyperintensities (WMHs).
METHODS: We included 115 patients with unilateral ICA stenosis ≥ 70%. The completeness of CoW was assessed and WMHs were rated on a visual scale. The score of deep and periventricular WMHs was compared between patients with complete and incomplete CoW and between the two hemispheres, ipsilateral and contralateral to stenosed ICA.
RESULTS: We included 115 patients with severe ICA stenosis, 60 patients

The present report discusses the case of a woman with neuromyelitis optica (NMO) who exhibited bilateral optic neuritis, longitudinally extensive myelitis, serum anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies, and a unique pattern of white matter involvement. The disease duration was 26 years, and the patient died at the age of 65 years. Sequential magnetic resonance images obtained during the last 6 years of life revealed leukoencephalopathy-like lesions extending symmetrically and contiguously from the periventricular regions, which had begun to transform into multiple cavities with semi-annular partitions. To assess the mid-term mortality and risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) and Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, 40 patients with HC and WPW were enrolled in our center between 2010 and 2017. An age- and gender-matched comparison cohort of patients with HC without WPW (n = 160) was generated from the same center. The clinical profile and outcomes were assessed. Of 40 patients with WPW, 28 underwent accessory pathway (AP) elimination. Two patients (7%) had failed in AP elimination. During mid-term follow-up, 1 patient had an implantable cardiover

No previous studies have examined the interaction between body mass index (BMI) and race/ethnicity with the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). We retrospectively followed 48,323 persons free of AF (43% Hispanic, 37% black, and 20% white; median age 60 years) for subsequent incident AF (ascertained from electrocardiograms). BMI categories included very severely underweight (BMI <15 kg/m2), severely underweight (BMI 15.1 to 15.9 kg/m2), underweight (BMI 16 to 18.4 kg/m2), normal (BMI 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 25.0 to 29.9 kg/m2), moderately obese (BMI 30 to 34.9 kg/m2), severely obese

BACKGROUND: Mutations in AIMP1, which plays an important role in the development and maintenance of axon-cytoskeleton integrity and regulating neurofilaments, cause neurodegeneration of variable severity and white matter abnormalities.
METHODS: From the patient records we analyzed the clinical evaluation, molecular genetics, neurodiagnostic, and neuroradiological investigations.
RESULTS: We describe six members of a large consanguineous family with a phenotype of severe neurodegeneration in the form of developmental delays, progressive microcephaly, epilepsy, and failure to thrive. MRI showe

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mutations in colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) cause adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP). Patients with ALSP can be misdiagnosed as having acute ischemic stroke due to hyperintensity lesions on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Mutant CSF1R proteins identified in ALSP show a complete loss of autophosphorylation of CSF1R.
METHODS: We conducted mutation screening of CSF1R in 123 patients with definite acute ischemic cerebrovascular syndrome and positive family history of stroke. The pathogenicity of iden

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The stiffness of large arteries and increased pulsatility can have an impact on the brain white matter (WM) microstructure, however those mechanisms are still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between central artery stiffness, axonal and myelin integrity in 54 cognitively unimpaired elderly subjects (65-75 years old).
METHODS: The neuronal fiber integrity of brain WM was assessed using diffusion tensor metrics and magnetization transfer imaging as measures of axonal organization (Fractional anisotropy, Radial diffusivity) and s

BACKGROUND: Most studies of brain white matter (WM) in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have focused on combat trauma, and often were confounded by neurological and substance dependence comorbidity. This study used tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and probabilistic tractography to characterize WM microstructure in a mixed-sex community sample of PTSD patients exposed to diverse and multiple traumas, and in trauma-exposed normal comparison (TENC) subjects.
METHODS: TBSS compared diffusion measures between 20 adults with DSM-IV PTSD and 17 TENC, using a whole-brain voxel-wise approach.

Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography (DCE-CT) is applied to observe adrenal tumours in detail by utilising from the contrast matter, which generally brings the tumour into the forefront. However, DCE-CT images are generally influenced by noises that occur as the result of the trade-off between radiation doses vs. noise. Herein, this situation constitutes a challenge in the achievement of accurate tumour segmentation. In CT images, most of the noises are similar to Gaussian Noise. In this study, arterial phase CT images containing adrenal tumours are utilised, and elimination of Gaussi
