Perceptions of New Zealand adults about reducing their risk of getting cancer.

AIM: To assess perceptions about potentially modifiable causes of cancer. METHODS: An anonymous telephone questionnaire administered to a sample, 20 years and older, randomly selected from telephone directory listings. RESULTS: Nearly 90% of 438 respondents (68% participation) considered that there were things which people could do to reduce cancer risk. Unprompted, almost two-thirds mentioned nutrition, and more than half suggested "not smoking." Other suggestions included being physically active, and protection from excessive sun exposure. Two-thirds believed they could reduce their own ri

Phoneme manipulation not onset-rime manipulation ability is a unique predictor of early reading.

BACKGROUND: Phonological awareness is known to be an excellent predictor of later reading acquisition. It remains unclear, however, whether phoneme manipulation alone best explains this association or whether an additional direct contribution of onset-rime awareness is predictive. This issue is explored here. METHOD: A longitudinal study is reported predicting national test and teacher-assessed performance of 351 children aged 7 from phonological awareness measures, pupil baseline attainment and background measures at age 5. RESULTS: Explicit phoneme manipulation skills at age 5 correlated m

Radiation safety instruction for non-radiation workers.

In today's society, neglecting to provide adequate hazard-awareness instruction to workers can be successfully used to file suit against institutions where radioactive material (RAM) or radiation generating devices (RGDs) are used. Because of the lack of instruction, in some cases, just the perceived risk (even where no significant exposure to radiation existed) has proven to be more important than the actual risk. Groups of non-radiation workers such as custodian, maintenance and laboratory personnel, whose duties may require them to work in the vicinity of RAM and RGDs, sometimes do not rece

Developmental dyslexia: a motor-articulatory feedback hypothesis.

Reading is mediated by parallel and widely distributed modular systems. There are, therefore, multiple loci in these systems where dysfunction may lead to developmental dyslexia. However, most normal children learn to read using the alphabetic system. Learning to use this system requires awareness that words are comprised of a system of speech sounds (phonological awareness) and the knowledge of how to convert letters (graphemes) into these speech sounds (phonemes). Most dyslexic children have deficient phonological awareness and have difficulty converting graphemes into phonemes. Studies of p

Predicting User Engagement in Health Misinformation Correction on Social Media Platforms in Taiwan: Content Analysis and Text Mining Study.

BACKGROUND: Health misinformation undermines responses to health crises, with social media amplifying the issue. Although organizations work to correct misinformation, challenges persist due to reasons such as the difficulty of effectively sharing corrections and information being overwhelming. At the same time, social media offers valuable interactive data, enabling researchers to analyze user engagement with health misinformation corrections and refine content design strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the attributes of correction posts and user engagement and investigate (1

Understanding How Discourse Themes in an Online Mental Health Community on Twitter/X Drive Varied Population-Specific Empowerment Processes in Alignment With Global Standards: A Qualitative Analysis of #BipolarClub.

BACKGROUND: Social media, encompassing online mental health communities (OMHCs), has revolutionized mental health discourse by fostering open discussions that drive population-specific empowerment. These discussions generate diverse empowerment processes, such as informational, family awareness, and social awareness support, that can empower different health-consumer populations based on their support needs. However, how OMHC discourse themes drive these empowerment processes remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to understand how discourse themes in Twitter/X OMHCs drive three cat

Neighborhood Social Vulnerability and Access to Expedited Partner Therapy Prescriptions: A Secret Shopper Audit Survey.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) disproportionately impact populations with higher social vulnerability. Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT), which allows the treatment of partners without requiring a medical visit, reduces STI reinfection rates and expands treatment access for underserved groups. However, EPT remains underutilized, particularly in the electronic prescription era, which introduces logistical complexities. Previous studies highlight low pharmacist awareness of EPT, but few have assessed its real world availability in pharmacies or how accessibility varies by socio

The Severity of Phonological Deficit as a Determinant of Dyslexia Compensation in Adulthood.

Dyslexia is a lifelong developmental condition affecting reading, with a prevalence of approximately 5% in adulthood. A small group can partially compensate for reading difficulties and achieve effective reading skills. This study explores the characteristics of this group, comparing cognitive and reading variables with typical readers and non-compensated readers with dyslexia. The study included 101 adults: 30 without dyslexia, 21 with compensated dyslexia and 50 with non-compensated dyslexia. Cognitive and linguistic tests assessed non-verbal intelligence, working memory, phonological awaren

Toward elimination of hepatitis A and B in Europe: vaccination successes, challenges, and opportunities.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B and hepatitis A are vaccine-preventable infections of global concern. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) vaccines available in Europe are underutilized in some age groups. While most European countries implemented childhood HBV universal routine vaccination (URV), vaccination coverage among adults remains low. Low HAV vaccination coverage among high-risk populations due to variable national vaccination policies, low awareness of vaccination benefits, and other barriers, increases the risk for outbreaks. AREAS COVERED: We discuss the awareness of hepa

Pausing propofol during neurosurgery to record intraoperative electrocorticography is feasible;10 years of clinical experience.

OBJECTIVE: Intraoperative electrocorticography (ioECoG) during neurosurgery is influenced by anesthetics. In our center we stop the propofol to enable interpretation of ioECoG. We reported our clinical experience and evaluated awareness and hemodynamic changes during the propofol-free periods (PFP). METHODS: We retrospectively included surgeries with paused propofol administration to record ioECoG (period: 2008-2019). Clinical reports were screened for symptoms of awareness. We compared mean arterial blood pressure (MAP; mmHg) and heart rate (HR;bpm) during PFP to baseline (ten minutes preced

Maternal health agency in women with a low socioeconomic status: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Health agency refers to one's capacity to form health-related goals, experience control, and possess the means to pursue them. Low socioeconomic status (SES) is linked to impaired health agency and increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, potentially due to a reduced tendency to seek care. Better healthcare availability may not improve their pregnancy outcomes, and therefore improved understanding of maternal health agency is paramount. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants who either had children or desired to have them. Low SES was determin

Visual motion processing in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia: An fMRI study.

Dorsal stream is an important pathway for visual information transmission. As a part of the dorsal pathway, the middle temporal visual motion areas (V5/MT+) are mainly responsible for visual motion processing and the ability of visual motion processing is closely related to reading. Compared with alphabetic scripts, the visual structure of Chinese characters is more complex and there are no clear grapheme-phoneme correspondence rules. So the ability of visual analysis plays an important role in Chinese character processing. This study first investigated the brain activation of Chinese dyslexic
