The method of axonal transport of horse-radish peroxidase was used to detect the localization of neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve sending the axons to the pyloric sphincter. The investigation was carried out in cats. Under study were also morphological features of the nodular ganglion responsible for afferent innervation of the sphincter. The maximum amount of the corresponding cells are found in the dorsomedial part of the dorsal motor nucleus in the area from +1.0 to +2.0 mm (with respect to obex). The afferent neurons to which information comes from interoceptors of th

Injury to mammalian motor nerves can lead to paralysis, but relatively successful regeneration may occur when conditions are favorable. Elucidation of the mechanism upholding successful regeneration is of theoretical and clinical interest. In this study, the hypothesis that insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) can stimulate motor nerve regeneration was tested. When IGF-II was infused continuously near a site of crush on the sciatic nerve, the distance of motor axon regeneration was increased significantly in rats. In contrast, spontaneous regeneration was inhibited when an anti-IGF-II antise

The function of cutaneous primary afferent unmyelinated nerves (C-fibres) was assessed by measuring axon reflex vasodilatation in the skin over the arms and feet of 15 elderly patients with chronic venous ulcers using a laser Doppler flowmeter. Dilatation of skin microvasculature in response to nerve-independent stimuli was also assessed. Results were compared with those of control subjects matched for age and sex. The chronic venous ulcer group showed reduced axon reflex vasodilatation in the feet but not the arms. Response to nerve-independent vasodilators was similar in both ulcer patients

OBJECTIVES: Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is considered a frequent complication of Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM). Establishing a causal relationship between PN and WM is complicated by confounding factors such as age-related axonal loss and diabetes. This scoping review aims to summarize the current evidence on WM-associated PN with a focus on prevalence, phenotype, and disability.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library and included studies describing either prevalence, phenotype, and/or disability of adults with WM and PN.
RESULTS: Thirty-four

BACKGROUND: Fibrous scar formation significantly inhibits axonal regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury (SCI). Atractylodin (ATD), an active constituent of traditional Chinese medicine, exhibits broad pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. Nevertheless, the potential therapeutic role of ATD in SCI and its underlying molecular mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated.
METHODS: An SCI model was established in C57 mice. Motor function was assessed using the Basso Mouse Scale scoring system, inclined plane test, swimming test,

Sarcopenia involves progressive muscle weakness driven by neuromuscular junction (NMJ) degradation, axonal injury, and diminished neurotrophic support. Electromyography (EMG) and plasma biomarkers can reveal these mechanisms, but integrated analyses remain scarce. We examined associations between EMG parameters and plasma biomarkers in older men with and without sarcopenia. We studied 146 men aged ≥60 years, classified as sarcopenic (n=72) or controls (n=74) using standardized criteria. Intramuscular EMG of the biceps brachii and vastus lateralis measured motor unit potential (MUP) amplitude,

Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) play crucial roles in neuronal development, synaptic transmission, and neuroplasticity. Deficits in BDNF/TrkB signalling and trafficking have been identified in several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are at an increased risk of developing AD compared to the general population. Basal forebrain neurons (BFNs) are among the first to degenerate in AD and DS, but the mechanisms underlying their vulnerability remain unclear. Using BFNs der

Some forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are associated with sequence variants in the superoxide dismutase 1 gene (SOD1). The mechanisms by which these variants contribute to ALS disease pathogenesis are poorly understood. Degenerative myelopathy (DM), a naturally occurring canine disease, shares similarities with some forms of SOD1-associated ALS, especially cases with sensory impairment. While motor pathway involvement in ALS has been extensively studied, sensory pathology has received comparatively less attention. To investigate whether pathology in the general proprioceptive pathw

Spinal cord injury (SCI), commonly resulting from sudden trauma such as traffic or sports accidents, leads to severe disruption of axonal connections and loss of sensory and motor function below the injury site. Despite numerous therapeutic efforts, effective strategies for neural repair remain limited. Tissue engineering has emerged as a promising approach for axonal regeneration, particularly through the design of three-dimensional (3D) polymeric scaffolds that can restore the structural and functional integrity of the injured spinal cord. This review focuses on recent advances in biomateria

Repairing long-segment peripheral nerve injuries remains a significant clinical challenge, hindered by oxidative stress, inflammation, insufficient revascularization, and limited axonal regeneration speeds. This study addresses these barriers by reconstructing the nerve regeneration microenvironment, enhancing cell migration, and accelerating axonal growth. An integrated regenerative microenvironment combining chemical signals, micro/nano structures, and electrical stimulation is developed. Specifically, nitric oxide (NO), a versatile signaling molecule, is dynamically released using sustained

Axonal injuries commonly contribute to poor functional outcomes following traumatic brain injury (TBI). To assess cerebral blood flow (CBF) and energy metabolic disturbances in a TBI model of widespread axonal injury, we exposed 105 adult mice to the central (midline) fluid percussion injury (cFPI) diffuse TBI model, or sham injury, and used 9.4 T magnetic resonance (MR) arterial spin labeling (ASL), cortical and hippocampal mitochondrial respiration, and hippocampal MR spectroscopy at 1- and 7-days post-injury (dpi). Widespread, bilateral CBF reductions were observed at day 1 dpi, changes tha

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: In a recent study, we showed that nerve ultrasound of the upper limbs could distinguish inherited sensory neuronopathy from inherited axonopathy; surprisingly, no differences were found in the lower limb nerves. In this study, we compared lower limb nerve ultrasound measurements in inherited neuronopathy, inherited axonopathy, and acquired axonopathy.
METHODS: Tibial and sural nerve ultrasound cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of 34 healthy controls were retrospectively compared with those of three patient groups: 17 with cerebellar ataxia with neuronopathy and vestibular arefle

Peripheral nerve regeneration and functional recovery rely on the chemical, physical, and structural properties of nerve guidance conduits (NGCs). However, the limited support for long-distance nerve regeneration and axonal guidance has hindered the widespread use of NGCs. This study introduces a novel nerve guidance conduit with oriented lateral walls, incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) within core-shell fibers prepared in a single step using a modified electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing technique to promote peripheral nerve regeneration. The structured conduit demonstrated

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide and vision loss in the disease results from the deterioration of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) and their axons. Metabolic dysfunction of RGC plays a significant role in the onset and progression of the disease in both human patients and rodent models, highlighting the need to better define the mechanisms regulating cellular energy metabolism in glaucoma. This study sought to determine if Sarm1, a gene involved in axonal degeneration and NAD+ metabolism, contributes to glaucomatous RGC loss in a mouse model with chronic el

Loss of synapses is the most robust pathological correlate of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-associated cognitive deficits, although the underlying mechanism remains incompletely understood. Synaptic terminals have abundant mitochondria which play an indispensable role in synaptic function through ATP provision and calcium buffering. Mitochondrial dysfunction is an early and prominent feature in AD which could contribute to synaptic deficits. Here, using electron microscopy, we examined synapses with a focus on mitochondrial deficits in presynaptic axonal terminals and dendritic spines in cortical b

During inflammatory, demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammation and axonal damage are prevalent early in the course. Axonal damage includes swelling, defects in transport, and failure to clear damaged intracellular proteins, all of which affect recovery and compromise neuronal integrity. The clearance of damaged cell components is important to maintain normal turnover and restore homeostasis. In this study, we used mass spectrometry to identify insoluble proteins within high-speed/mercaptoethanol/sarcosyl-insoluble pellets from purified white matter plaques isolated f
