Improving understanding of capacity to consent to sensitive HIV biomedical prevention research among adolescents and their parents or guardians in Rakai Uganda (ICARE): a quasi-experimental nonequivalent groups design protocol.

BACKGROUND: For research on sensitive topics like HIV, it is critical to understand the capacity of adolescents to provide informed consent, as parental consent has been identified as the greatest barrier to adolescent participation in biomedical research. In many countries including low-and middle-income countries, where 90% of adolescents live, adolescents can consent to sexual and reproductive healthcare but require parent/guardian permission to participate in research before age 18 - leading to adolescent underrepresentation and systematic exclusion from biomedical and behavioral studies.

Child neglect, social context, and educational outcomes: examining the moderating effects of school and neighborhood context.

Research on child neglect has found that neglected children are more likely to experience worse developmental outcomes than non-neglected children. These negative outcomes include antisocial behavior as well as poor school performance. Eco-developmental theory has found that adverse social contexts often worsen these outcomes for neglected and maltreated youths. However, little research has been done on the educational outcomes of neglected children and none of it has employed a national, longitudinal, community sample with an examination of social context. We do so in our research and find th

Autism overflows: increasing prevalence and proliferating theories.

This selective review examines the lack of an explanation for the sharply increasing prevalence of autism, and the lack of any synthesis of the proliferating theories of autism. The most controversial and most widely disseminated notion for increasing prevalence is the measles-mumps-rubella/thimerosal vaccine theory. Less controversial causes that have been proposed include changes in autism diagnostic criteria, increasing services for autism, and growing awareness of the disorder. Regardless of its causes, the increasing prevalence of autism has put pressure on the field of autism research to

Your pain, my gain: Schadenfreude as a driving mechanism of online "liking" behavior.

The counter-valenced use of the "like" button is an understudied phenomenon. Using a mixed-methods approach, this manuscript examines if individuals use the "like" button on social media to induce negative emotions in members of other brand communities while facilitating joy at that pain - that is, schadenfreude. Study 1 uses archival data to provide an initial illustration of "liking" behavior on the negative social media posts of sports teams, with the behavior increasing over a span of five years. Study 2 uses qualitative surveys to investigate if individuals engage in negative "liking" beh

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Telehealth Aftercare Interventions to Reduce Suicidal Behavior or Suicide Following Hospital Treatment in the Emergency Department.

Background: The relative risk of subsequent suicidal behaviors (and suicide mortality) is high following an episode of hospital-treatment for suicidal behavior. This study evaluated the effectiveness of telehealth aftercare interventions in reducing suicidal behaviors. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using 13 online databases (from inception until July 2024). Analyses included narrative synthesis and random effects meta-analyses based on study design. Risk of bias was assessed by Cochrane tools. Results: We identified n = 14 studies involving n = 14,420 participants. Pooled effect e

Antisocial personality disorder:Failure to balance excitation/inhibition?

While healthy brain function relies on a dynamic but tightly regulated interaction between excitation (E) and inhibition (I), a spectrum of social cognition disorders, including antisocial behavior and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), frequently ensuing from irregular neurodevelopment, may be associated with E/I imbalance and concomitant alterations in neural connectivity. Technological advances in the evaluation of structural and functional E/I balance proxies in clinical settings and in human cell culture models provide a general basis for identification of biomarkers providing a powe

Impact of Botfly Parasitism on the Behavior of Mantled Howler Monkeys.

Parasitism, a widespread nutrient acquisition strategy among animals, results from a long evolutionary history where one species derives its metabolic needs from another. Parasites can significantly reduce host fitness, affecting reproduction, growth, and survivability. Vertebrate hosts exhibit defensive strategies against parasites, including "sickness behaviors" such as lethargy and self-grooming to remove ectoparasites. In addition, social animals may engage in "helping sick animals" behaviors, such as social grooming, to aid parasitized group members. Mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palli

The Effect of a Training Program Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior on the Self-Care of Patients with Cerebrovascular Accident: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrovascular accident dramatically impacts patients' lives. However, this chronic disease could be managed by boosting self-care and following healthy behaviors. Accordingly, this trial sought to specify the impact of a training program established on the theory of planned behavior on the self-care of clients with this condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This trial was performed on 80 clients, who were selected using a random numbers table and divided into two equal groups to receive either usual care alone or usual care plus a training program based on the theory of planned beha

Maternal perceived stress, household disorder, eating behaviors and adiposity of women and their children.

BACKGROUND: Stress is associated with physiological and behavioral adaptations that increase the risk for obesity and related diseases in adults and children. Mechanisms linking stress to chronic disease are diverse and not fully elucidated, but research suggests stress may impact eating behaviors and increase food intake and thereby, risk for obesity. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that women's perceived stress and household disorder are associated with more uncontrolled and emotional eating among women, more food responsiveness and emotional overeating among

The Psychosocial Correlates of Non-suicidal Self-Injury Within a Sample of Adolescents With Mood Disorder.

BACKGROUND: According to the integrated theoretical model, adolescents' behaviors were the outcome of the complex interplay between multiple levels. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious and high prevalent problem among adolescents with mood disorders. However, a systematic perspective on psychosocial correlates among Chinese clinical adolescents is still rare. METHOD: The impact of several factors at the individual (i.e., sex, age, self-esteem, and psychological distress), family (i.e., family structure, family income, and family support), and social level (i.e., living environment, p

Social processing by the primate medial frontal cortex.

The primate medial frontal cortex is comprised of several brain regions that are consistently implicated in regulating complex social behaviors. The medial frontal cortex is also critically involved in many non-social behaviors, such as those involved in reward, affective, and decision-making processes, broadly implicating the fundamental role of the medial frontal cortex in internally guided cognition. An essential question therefore is what unique contributions, if any, does the medial frontal cortex make to social behaviors? In this chapter, we outline several neural algorithms necessary fo

Aggressive behavior, emotional, and attention problems across childhood and academic attainment at the end of primary school.

PURPOSE: To assess whether aggressive behavior and emotional problems from early childhood onwards are related to academic attainment at the end of primary education, and whether these associations are independent of attention problems. METHODS: Data on 2546 children participating in a longitudinal birth cohort in Rotterdam were analyzed. Aggressive behavior, attention and emotional problems at ages 1½, 3, 5 and 10 years were assessed with the Child Behavior Checklist. Academic attainment at the end of primary school (12 years of age) was measured with the CITO test, a national Dutch academic

mGluR5-Mediated eCB Signaling in the Nucleus Accumbens Controls Vulnerability to Depressive-Like Behaviors and Pain After Chronic Social Defeat Stress.

Stress contributes to major depressive disorder (MDD) and chronic pain, which affect a significant portion of the global population, but researchers have not clearly determined how these conditions are initiated or amplified by stress. The chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model is a mouse model of psychosocial stress that exhibits depressive-like behavior and chronic pain. We hypothesized that metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) expressed in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) normalizes the depressive-like behaviors and pain following CSDS. Here, we show that CSDS induced both pain and soci

Physical punishment, physical abuse, and child behavior problems in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Prior literature has demonstrated the associations of parental physical punishment with child behavior problems and increased risk of physical abuse. In South Korea, physical punishment is a common parenting practice. In 2021, legislative reforms eliminated legal grounds for parental physical punishment in South Korea. However, research on physical punishment, physical abuse, and child behavior problems in the Korean context is scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether physical punishment and physical abuse have unique associations with child behavior problems and whether phy

Discriminability of numerosity-evoked fMRI activity patterns in human intra-parietal cortex reflects behavioral numerical acuity.

Areas of the primate intraparietal cortex have been identified as an important substrate of numerical cognition. In human fMRI studies, activity patterns in these and other areas have allowed researchers to read out the numerosity a subject is viewing, but the relation of such decodable information with behavioral numerical proficiency remains unknown. Here, we estimated the precision of behavioral numerosity discrimination (internal Weber fraction) in twelve adult subjects based on psychophysical testing in a delayed numerosity comparison task outside the scanner. FMRI data were then recorded
