A Study of the Synergistic Effects of Essential Oils from Origanum compactum and Origanum elongatum with Commercial Antibiotics against Highly Prioritized Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria for the World Health Organization.

The irrational use of antibiotics has favored the emergence of resistant bacteria, posing a serious threat to global health. To counteract antibiotic resistance, this research seeks to identify novel antimicrobials derived from essential oils that operate through several mechanisms. It aims to evaluate the quality and composition of essential oils from Origanum compactum and Origanum elongatum; test their antimicrobial activity against various strains; explore their synergies with commercial antibiotics; predict the efficacy, toxicity, and stability of compounds; and understand their molecular

Drug susceptibility testing of Nocardia spp. using the disk diffusion method.

BACKGROUND: Drug susceptibility testing (DST) for Nocardia spp. is essential to initiate effective antibiotic therapy. Currently, the only recommended technique is the determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) by microdilution. This method can be tedious to perform, despite the availability of ready-to-use plates. Herein, the aim was to determine the critical inhibition diameters specific to Nocardia spp. METHODS: MICs of 134 Nocardia isolates were determined by microdilution. Interpretative categories (Susceptible/Intermediate/Resistant) were determined using Clinical and Lab

Comparison of antimicrobial resistance among Salmonella enterica serovars isolated from Canadian turkey flocks, 2013 to 2021.

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Salmonella from turkeys has raised a food safety concern in Canada as certain serovars have been implicated in human salmonellosis outbreaks in recent years. While several studies evaluated AMR in broiler chickens in Canada, there are limited studies that assess AMR in turkey flocks. This study analyzed data collected between 2013 and 2021 by the Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (CIPARS) farm turkey surveillance program to determine the prevalence of AMR and differences in resistance patterns among Salmonel

Invasive Pneumococcal Disease and COVID-19 With Acute Otitis Media and a Tegmen Tympani Defect.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of otitis media, pneumonia, sinusitis, and meningitis. This encapsulated, gram-positive bacterium colonizes the nasopharynx. Major risk factors, including age, hyposplenism, and immunosuppression, predispose to serious infections. Viral infections are known to increase the risk of secondary bacterial infections as the initial immune response can compromise defenses against bacteria. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) similarly poses a risk for secondary bacterial infections and coinfections, such as invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Still, tempor
