Behavioral characteristics of three children with the broad thumb-hallux (Rubinstein-Taybi) syndrome.

Behavioral characteristics of three children with Broad Thumb-Hallux or Rubinstein-Taybi (R-T) syndrome were compared with those of a somewhat comparable clinic sample (N - 15) of children with organic syndromes and retardation. A number of mutual, behavioral resemblances of the three R-T children to each other were found to be absent or less prominent in the comparison group; these included: (i) the R-T children were more emotional and excitable; (ii) more often had nightmares and engaged in self-stimulation; (iii) had greater difficulty getting over anger (pouted); (iv) were friendly and mor

Intergenerational Transmission of Psychiatric Conditions and Psychiatric, Behavioral, and Psychosocial Outcomes in Offspring.

IMPORTANCE: Psychiatric conditions in parents are associated with many psychiatric and nonpsychiatric outcomes in offspring. However, it remains unknown whether this intergenerational transmission is attributable to broader psychopathology comorbidity or to specific conditions. OBJECTIVE: To estimate associations between general and specific psychopathology factors in parents and a wide range of register-based outcomes in their offspring. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This Swedish national register-based cohort study included 2 947 703 individuals born between 1970 and 2000 and followed

Parent-Child Communication and NSSI in Depressed Adolescents: The Role of Anxiety and Emotional Intelligence.

In recent years, nonssuicidal self-injury (NSSI) has emerged as a critical public health issue among Chinese adolescents. However, the mechanisms contributing to NSSI behaviours remain underexplored. This study examines the roles of parent-adolescent communication, anxiety and emotional intelligence in NSSI behaviours among adolescents diagnosed with depressive disorders. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 263 Chinese adolescents diagnosed with depressive disorders. Participants completed questionnaires assessing parent-adolescent communication, anxiety, emotional intelligence and NSS

Social Preference of Children at Risk for ADHD in Schools: Do They Have Limited Social Resources and can Friends Protect Against Peer Rejection?

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study investigated social opportunities in children at risk for ADHD in regular primary education classrooms. First, we aimed to compare social preference of children at risk for ADHD and of their unilateral friends, with their classmates. Second, we hypothesized that for the at risk-group higher levels of problem behaviors would be related to having friends with lower social preference, via own lower preference (limited social resources-hypothesis). Third, we hypothesized that having friends with higher social preference could buffer against lower social prefer

An exploration of how adolescents experience and reason their parents' comments on their weight, shape, and eating.

INTRODUCTION: Disordered eating among adolescents is of increasing concern given associated physical and mental health sequelae. Cognitions underlying disordered eating are formed in childhood and adolescence. Parents are a significant presence during this period, so it is critical to understand how they influence their adolescent's eating cognitions and behaviors. METHODS: Qualitative analysis using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) methodology was employed to consider the lived experiences of 10 Australian adolescents (14-19 years), 60% female, as they engaged with their parent

Parental Incarceration and Child Sleep and Eating Behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether parental incarceration is significantly associated with a number of sleep and eating behaviors among offspring during early childhood. STUDY DESIGN: Data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study, an at-risk sample of parents and their offspring, were employed to test this possibility. Both maternal and paternal incarceration history were examined as predictors of whether children manifested high levels of the following 7 health behaviors: sleep problems, short sleep duration, salty snack consumption, starch consumption, sweets consumption, soda consu

Oral habits--part 2: beyond nutritive and non-nutritive sucking.

In addition to sucking habits, a range of other habits have been associated with short- and long-term dental and orthodontic problems. These habits include tongue thrusting and atypical swallowing, lip sucking, oral self-mutilation, mouth breathing, and bruxism. Although the association between form and function continues to be controversial, if habits are of sufficient duration they may lead to dental malocclusion and impede successful management. Oral self-injury and bruxism can lead to significant problems, such as soft tissue trauma and infection. Accurate history taking and examination ar

Sex 'n' drugs 'n' rock 'n' roll: the meaning and social consequences of pubertal timing.

This is a brief review of the normal changes in adolescent behaviour and the interplay between biology and social factors that occur at and around puberty, in an attempt to explain when this transition may become problematic The onset of puberty is a biological marker for an individual's transition from a non-reproductive to a reproductive state. Adolescence is a normal developmental transition associated with clearly visible physical changes, reorganization and pruning of neuronal circuits in the brain and the occurrence of new behaviours and interests. It is a time when new life tasks (orien

Six cases of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Six cases of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome are discussed in the light of conflicting views on the aetiology of the condition. It is hypothesized that the onset of coprolalia in patients with persistent childhood tics indicates a disturbances of the normal balance between a need for tension relief by swearing and a capacity to control such vocal activity. Some conclusions are drawn on the management of the syndrome by the use of butyrophenones, massed practice of tics, and the promotion of personality development. A flexible approach geared to the individual patient's particular needs is rec

Eating behaviors among school-age children associated with perceptions of stress.

Eating has been theorized to be useful as a coping strategy in response to stressful situations. However, investigation of this behavior in children is limited. The present study is a secondary cross-sectional analysis of longitudinal data that were collected from cohorts of fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grader students. Perceived stress was correlated with unhealthy eating behaviors (r = .13, p < .001), as well as with the use of eating as a coping mechanism (r = .24, p < .001). Hispanic children reported using eating as a coping mechanism most frequently, followed by African-American and Caucas

Prevalence and Characterization of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder in a Pediatric Population.

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a relatively new feeding and eating disorder category in DSM-5 characterized by extreme food avoidance/restriction. Much is unknown about ARFID, with limited understanding of its prevalence and comorbidities in general pediatric populations. This study aimed to classify ARFID prevalence and characteristics in children within the Generation R Study, a population-based Dutch cohort (N = 2,862). METHOD: ARFID was assessed via an Index that comprised parent-reported questionnaires and researcher-assessed measures of picky eating, ene

Gender-dependent effects of maternal immune activation on the behavior of mouse offspring.

Autism spectrum disorders are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by two core symptoms; impaired social interactions and communication, and ritualistic or repetitive behaviors. Both epidemiological and biochemical evidence suggests that a subpopulation of autistics may be linked to immune perturbations that occurred during fetal development. These findings have given rise to an animal model, called the "maternal immune activation" model, whereby the offspring from female rodents who were subjected to an immune stimulus during early or mid-pregnancy are studied. Here, C57BL/6 mouse dams

Ian: a 7-year old with prenatal drug exposure and early exposure to family violence.

A 7(1/2)-year-old boy is brought to a new primary care pediatrician because his grandparents, who have legal custody, want a "fresh look" at his behavior. Ian's grandmother begins the history with the comment, "He started out kind of rough." He was exposed to methamphetamine and marijuana throughout gestation and his mother had bipolar disease and hypertension. A Cesarean section for failure to progress was followed by normal Apgar scores and an unremarkable neonatal course. Ian's parents physically fought during the first 6 months of his life; at that time, the parents separated and the grand
