INTRODUCTION: Auditory performance and language proficiency in young children who utilize auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) throughout the first 3 years of life are difficult to predict. ABI users have challenges as a result of delays in language proficiency and the acquisition of reading comprehension, even if ABI technology offers auditory experiences that enhance spoken language development. The aim of this study was to evaluate about the impact of language proficiency on reading comprehension skills in children with ABI.
METHOD: In this study, 20 children with ABI were evaluated for thei

INTRODUCTION: Fragile-X syndrome(FXS) is a neurological disease caused by abnormal repeats in the 5'untranslated region of the FMR1 gene leading to a defective fragile-X-messenger-ribonucleoprotein-1 (FMRP). Although relatively common in children, it is usually under-diagnosed especially in developing countries where genetic screening is not routinely practiced. So far, FXS lacks a laboratory biomarker that can be used for screening, severity scoring or therapeutic monitoring of potential new treatments.
METHODS: 110 subjects were recruited; 80 male children with suspected FXS and 30 matched

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability, which is a biologically based neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a child's social interaction and communication skills. Core deficits are identified in two domains: social communication/interaction and restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior. Children and youth with ASD have service needs in behavioral, educational, health, leisure, family support, and other areas. Autism is a set of heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions, characterized by inability to acquire social skills, repetitive behaviors and failu

There are many controversies concerning the management of children after mild head injury. Most of these patients achieve a full recovery without medical or surgical intervention. A small percentage of them deteriorate owing to intracranial complications. The goal of this study was to identify significant factors that might allow the identification of patients at risk of subsequent deterioration. Its secondary goal was to establish a clinical protocol for the management of mild head injuries in children. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 166 children and adolescents with head trauma w

We aimed to identify modifiable risk factors affecting ambulation in Chinese children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) by analyzing follow-up data from 161 patients with DMD. Continuous variables were compared using t-test or the Wilcoxon rank-sum test (for non-normally distributed variables). Cox regression determined factors influencing walking ability, and the log-rank test compared retention of walking ability between school-going and non-school-going patients. Hormone therapy (HR 3.72; P = .033), school attendance (HR 5.20; P = .010), and Disability and Social Support Rating Scale s

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the leading heritable cause of intellectual disability, has a co-occurrence rate of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) estimated at ~60%. Children with FXS experience delayed achievement and slower development of key motor abilities, which happens to an even greater extent for children with both FXS and ASD. A multitude of studies have demonstrated that motor abilities are foundational skills related to later communication outcomes in neurotypical development, as well as in the context of ASD. However, these associations remain unexamined in FXS, or FXS + ASD. In this stu

Alterations in gonad formation or function can lead to congenital conditions in which chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex is atypical. These conditions are referred to as disorders of sex development (DSD) and have a heterogeneous etiology. The assessment of these children by a multidisciplinary team is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and should be initiated promptly due to the potentially life-threatening nature of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a common cause of DSD. We present a neonate born at 39 weeks with a weak cry, slight hypotonia, poor suction reflex, peculiar facies, and ambi

Auditory perceptual analysis (APA) is the main method for clinical assessment of speech-language deficits, which are one of the most prevalent childhood disabilities. However, results from APA are susceptible to intra- and inter-rater variabilities. There are also other limitations of manual or hand transcription-based speech disorder diagnostic methods. There is increased interest in developing automated methods that quantify speech patterns for diagnosing speech disorders in children to address these limitations. Landmark (LM) analysis is an approach that characterizes acoustic events occurr

Acute septic arthritis in children is an orthopaedic emergency. A delay in diagnosis and inappropriate treatment can result in devastating damage to the joint with lifelong disability as a consequence. The clinical presentation can be a diagnostic challenge, especially in young children. A recent systematic review showed that joint tenderness and fever are important signals of septic arthritis. Ultrasound is helpful in detecting the presence of a joint effusion. Plain radiographs may show bone changes but magnetic resonance imaging is the most reliable imaging study for detecting concomitant o

Adolescents with intellectual disability (ID) experience challenges and uncertainty when making judgments about other people's intentions. In an attempt to achieve certainty, they might exhibit judgment tendencies that differ from those of typically developing adolescents. This study investigated social judgment making in adolescents with ID (n = 34, M age = 14.89 years, SD = 1.41 years) compared with chronological age-matched adolescents without ID (n = 34, M age = 14.68 years, SD = 1.15 years) and mental age (MA)-matched children (n = 34, M age = 7.93 years, SD = 0.64 years). Autosomal recessive congenital ichthyoses (ARCI) are characterized by generalized skin scaling, hyperkeratosis, erythroderma, and disabling features affecting the skin (palmoplantar keratoderma, fissures, pain, itch), eyes, ears, and joints. Disease severity and chronicity, patient disfigurement, and time and costs required for care impose a major burden on quality of life. This multicentre cross-sectional study investigated the impact of ARCI on quality of life of patients and families, using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), the Children DLQI (CDLQI) and Family Burden of Ichthyosis

Nodding syndrome (NS) is a progressive encephalopathy of children and adolescents characterized by seizures, including periodic vertical head nodding. Epidemic NS, which has affected parts of East Africa, appears to have clinical overlap with sub-Saharan Nakalanga syndrome (NLS), a brain disorder associated with pituitary dwarfism that appears to have a patchy distribution across sub-Sahara. Clinical stages of NS include inattention and blank stares, vertical head nodding, convulsive seizures, multiple impairments, and severe cognitive and motorsystem disability, including features suggesting

BACKGROUND: Nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) defines acute mesenteric ischemia without occlusion of the mesenteric arteries. The most common cause of NOMI is vasoconstriction or vasospasm of a mesenteric artery. NOMI generally affects patients >50 years of age, and few cases have been reported in children.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old boy with severe neurodevelopmental disability developed sudden-onset fever, abdominal distention, and dyspnea. Laboratory and radiological findings indicated acute intestinal obstruction and prerenal failure. He developed transient cardiopulmonary arr

Twin studies indicate that dyscalculia (or mathematical disability) is caused partly by a genetic component, which is yet to be understood at the molecular level. Recently, a coding variant (rs133885) in the myosin-18B gene was shown to be associated with mathematical abilities with a specific effect among children with dyslexia. This association represents one of the most significant genetic associations reported to date for mathematical abilities and the only one reaching genome-wide statistical significance. We conducted a replication study in different cohorts to assess the effect of rs133

Head trauma is one of the most challenging fields of traumatology and demands immediate attention and intervention by first-line clinicians. Symptoms can vary from victim to victim and according to the victim's age, leading to difficulties in making timely and accurate decisions at the point of care. In children, falls, accidents while playing, sports injuries, and abuse are the major causes of head trauma. Traffic accidents are the main cause of disability and death in adolescents and adults. Injury sites include facial bones, muscles, ligaments, vessels, joints, nerves, and focal or whole-br

Attention problems are ubiquitous in clinical practice, commonly found in many childhood learning and behavior disorders. Practitioners need cost- and time-effective methods for determining whether children have attention problems due to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or numerous other conditions. This study examined the utility of a 15-minute ADHD screening battery designed to differentiate ADHD (including inattentive, IT, and combined, CT, subtypes), specific learning disability (SLD), and typical child samples. Results for the 368 children (age 6 to 12 years) revealed that

Dyskinetic cerebral palsy (CP) is a movement disorder that is difficult to treat and which causes major disability. We report on two female patients (aged 5y and 8y) who experienced severe perinatal asphyxia and developed dyskinetic CP, clinically characterized by choreoathetosis. Neuropsychological testing of these children showed a low average developmental quotient and no attentional deficit. Monotherapy with levetiracetam was initiated to improve balance control and fine motor skills. Treatment was evaluated by use of video and the Visual Analog Scale. In both children an impressive improv
