Womb for debate: the complexities of early-age hysterectomies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hysterectomy remains one of the most performed gynecologic procedures, yet its application in young and nulliparous individuals raises complex ethical, medical, and psychosocial considerations. As early detection of gynecologic conditions improves, requests for hysterectomy at younger ages may increase. This review examines the current literature on the morbidity, quality of life, psychological impact, and social implications of hysterectomy in younger patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Research indicates both benefits and risks associated with early-age hysterectomy. While it prov

Effect of Sound Preference on Loudness Tolerance and Preferred Listening Levels Using Personal Listening Devices.

Background/Objectives: This study examined the effect of sound preference on loudness tolerance (LTLs) and preferred listening levels (PLLs) using personal listening devices (PLDs). The implication of this relationship on hearing health promotion counseling and practices using PLDs is discussed. Methods: Participants were 50 individuals, aged 21 to 90 years, with normal hearing or hearing loss. Listeners rated several sound samples (i.e., music, running speech, and machinery noise) played through a PLD using earphones according to their sound preference (i.e., enjoyable, acceptable, and unplea

An updated understanding of the natural history of cervical human papillomavirus infection-clinical implications.

Recently, the International Papillomavirus Society convened a working group on cervical human papillomavirus latency, which resulted in an updated understanding of the human papillomavirus natural history. While the previous human papillomavirus natural history model considered human papillomavirus detection to be a result of human papillomavirus acquisition or possibly reinfection, and loss of human papillomavirus detection to be a result of viral clearance, the updated understanding of the human papillomavirus natural history is more nuanced. Thus, human papillomavirus detection may occur as

Comparing vasectomy techniques, recovery and complications: tips and tricks.

Vasectomies are safe and effective, achieving up to 99.7% in sterilization, with complication rates around 1-2%. As vasectomy uptake rises, physicians should stay informed about counseling, isolation and occlusion techniques, post-op recovery, and associated risks and complications. Historically, pre-vasectomy counseling has been performed in-person, but recent literature has shown that telehealth is a viable alternative, and a physical exam may not be necessitated. With regard to vas isolation and occlusion, current international guidelines support a minimally invasive approach such as no-sca

Genetics and Clinical Findings Associated with Early-Onset Myopia and Retinal Detachment in Saudi Arabia.

Autosomal recessive types of both syndromic and non-syndromic inherited myopia are common in Saudi Arabia (SA) because many people marry their relatives. The prevalence of syndromic myopathies in SA, like Stickler syndrome (SS), Knobloch syndrome (KS), and Marfan syndrome (MFS), further complicates the disease spectrum. The causative genes linked to the Knobloch, Marfan, and Pierson syndromes are COL18A1, FBN1, and LAMB2, respectively. Additionally, we found recessive types of non-syndromic high myopia that have a high chance of causing retinal detachment, like those linked to LRPAP1 and LEPRE

Revisiting ultrasonographic soft markers of aneuploidy: A thoughtful analysis in low-risk and screening naïve Indian antenatal women.

This study aimed to assess the prevalence of soft markers on second-trimester sonography in low-risk and screening naïve Indian antenatal women and determine their association with aneuploidy. Soft markers were evaluated through ultrasound, and likelihood ratios (LRs) and modified risk (MR) for aneuploidy were calculated. Pregnant women with a MR >1:250 underwent genetic counseling and invasive testing, whereas those with a lower risk received follow-up. Associations were estimated via Fisher's exact test. A total of 4051 anomaly scans were reviewed, among which 207 (5.1%) women were found to

Prenatal Diagnosis of Hartsfield Syndrome in the Fetus With Isolated Ectrodactyly Caused by a Novel Variant in FGFR1.

Molecular genetic testing was performed on a fetus with ectrodactyly of the right foot to clarify the pathogenic cause and provide evidence for prenatal counseling. Trio whole-exome sequencing (trio-WES) was performed on the fetus and his parents to identify the underlying genetic cause. Candidate variants were validated by Sanger sequencing, and their molecular effects were analyzed through minigene assays. Trio-WES identified a novel heterozygous variant (c.1977+1G>C) in FGFR1, which is consistent with FGFR1-related Hartsfield syndrome (HS; OMIM#615465). Sanger sequencing confirmed that this

Effects of multidisciplinary therapy on energy balance, inflammation, and metabolic diseases in adolescents with obesity: A narrative review.

Obesity is a consequence of multiple factors, including genetics, lifestyle and nutritional choices, physical activity, sleep duration, screen time, and mood disorders. These behavioral elements can impair the regulation of energy balance and obesity management that link obesity to a constellation of chronic conditions that lead to a high prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors, metabolic syndrome, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Multidisciplinary therapy is defined as an approach delivered by a multidisciplinary-trained health team covering at least two components of behavior, physic
