Hearing-impaired listeners show increased audiovisual benefit when listening to speech in noise.

Recent studies provide evidence for changes in audiovisual perception as well as for adaptive cross-modal auditory cortex plasticity in older individuals with high-frequency hearing impairments (presbycusis). We here investigated whether these changes facilitate the use of visual information, leading to an increased audiovisual benefit of hearing-impaired individuals when listening to speech in noise. We used a naturalistic design in which older participants with a varying degree of high-frequency hearing loss attended to running auditory or audiovisual speech in noise and detected rare target

The contribution of facial dynamics to subtle expression recognition in typical viewers and developmental visual agnosia.

Facial expressions are inherently dynamic cues that develop and change over time, unfolding their affective signal. Although facial dynamics are assumed important for emotion recognition, testing often involves intense and stereotypical expressions and little is known about the role of temporal information in the recognition of subtle, non-stereotypical expressions. In Experiment 1 we demonstrate that facial dynamics are critical for recognizing subtle and non-stereotypical facial expressions, but not for recognizing intense and stereotypical displays of emotion. In Experiment 2 we further exa

How Age and Frequency Impact the Thyroid Cartilages of Professional Singers.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Young professional singers can easily reach very high pitches. In contrast, older singers often complain that they have to exert substantially more laryngopharyngeal force to reach the same high pitch compared with their earlier years. Various factors such as the property changes of the mucosa and ossification that impact the singing apparatus were suggested as explanations in the literature. The aim of this study was to analyze thyroid deformation-and thereby stiffness indirectly-during singing as a potential reason for this phenomenon. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.

Evaluation of afferent pain pathways in adrenomyeloneuropathic patients.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with adrenomyeloneuropathy may have dysfunctions of visual, auditory, motor and somatosensory pathways. We thought on examining the nociceptive pathways by means of laser evoked potentials (LEPs), to obtain additional information on the pathophysiology of this condition. METHODS: In 13 adrenomyeloneuropathic patients we examined LEPs to leg, arm and face stimulation. Normative data were obtained from 10 healthy subjects examined in the same experimental conditions. We also examined brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs), pattern reversal full-field visual evoked pote

Comparing abnormalities of amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in multiple system atrophy and idiopathic Parkinson's disease measured with resting-state fMRI.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) and Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) show overlapping clinical manifestations with different treatment and prognosis. However, the shared and distinct underlying neural substrates are not yet understood, which needs to be explored between MSA and IPD. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 29 MSA patients, 17 IPD patients and 25 healthy controls (HC) and the Amplitude of Low-Frequency Fluctuations (ALFF) was compared. Lower ALFF in bilateral basal ganglion, bilateral ventrolateral prefrontal cortex and right amygdala, as w

The differential effect of trigeminal vs. peripheral pain stimulation on visual processing and memory encoding is influenced by pain-related fear.

Compared to peripheral pain, trigeminal pain elicits higher levels of fear, which is assumed to enhance the interruptive effects of pain on concomitant cognitive processes. In this fMRI study we examined the behavioral and neural effects of trigeminal (forehead) and peripheral (hand) pain on visual processing and memory encoding. Cerebral activity was measured in 23 healthy subjects performing a visual categorization task that was immediately followed by a surprise recognition task. During the categorization task subjects received concomitant noxious electrical stimulation on the forehead or h

Neural oscillations in the temporal pole for a temporally congruent audio-visual speech detection task.

Though recent studies have elucidated the earliest mechanisms of processing in multisensory integration, our understanding of how multisensory integration of more sustained and complicated stimuli is implemented in higher-level association cortices is lacking. In this study, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to determine how neural oscillations alter local and global connectivity during multisensory integration processing. We acquired MEG data from 15 healthy volunteers performing an audio-visual speech matching task. We selected regions of interest (ROIs) using whole brain time-frequency a

Schizophrenia and the eye.

Although visual processing impairments are common in schizophrenia, it is not clear to what extent these originate in the eye vs. the brain. This review highlights potential contributions, from the retina and other structures of the eye, tovisual processing impairments in schizophrenia and high-risk states. A second goal is to evaluate the status of retinal abnormalities as biomarkers for schizophrenia. The review was motivated by known retinal changes in other disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis), and their relationships to perceptual and cognitive impairments, and diseas

How the visual aspects can be crucial in reading acquisition? The intriguing case of crowding and developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder (about 10% of children across cultures) characterized by severe difficulties in learning to read. According to the dominant view, DD is considered a phonological processing impairment that might be linked to a cross-modal, letter-to-speech sound integration deficit. However, new theories-supported by consistent data-suggest that mild deficits in low-level visual and auditory processing can lead to DD. This evidence supports the probabilistic and multifactorial approach for DD. Among others, an interesting visual deficit

Are evoked potentials in patients with adult-onset pompe disease indicative of clinically relevant central nervous system involvement?

PURPOSE: Pompe disease is a multisystem autosomal recessive glycogen storage disease. Autoptic findings in patients with classic infantile and late-onset Pompe disease have proven that accumulation of glycogen can also be found in the peripheral and central nervous system. To assess the functional role of these pathologic findings, multimodal sensory evoked potentials were analyzed. METHODS: Serial recordings for brainstem auditory, visual, and somatosensory evoked potentials of 11 late-onset Pompe patients were reviewed. Data at the onset of the enzyme replacement therapy with alglucosidase

Far-space neglect in conjunction but not feature search following transcranial magnetic stimulation over right posterior parietal cortex.

Near- and far-space coding in the human brain is a dynamic process. Areas in dorsal, as well as ventral visual association cortex, including right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC), right frontal eye field (rFEF), and right ventral occipital cortex (rVO), have been shown to be important in visuospatial processing, but the involvement of these areas when the information is in near or far space remains unclear. There is a need for investigations of these representations to help explain the pathophysiology of hemispatial neglect, and the role of near and far space is crucial to this. We used a con
