A Novel Slit Lamp-Based System for 3D Ultrasound of the Eye.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop and evaluate a novel slit-lamp-based system to acquire 3-dimensional (3D) ultrasound volumes using conventional ultrasound probes. METHODS: A slit-lamp adapter was 3D printed and connected with a linear actuator and graphical user interface (GUI) system to control movement and create volumes of 2-dimensional scans. The ultrasound probe contacted the patient's cornea to perform the scan. The GUI software was designed to acquire and process b-scan images, which were exported to 3D Slicer and manually annotated. The annotated images were used to render 3D r

Comorbidity of anxiety and dry eye disease: shared biomarkers and immune responses.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye disease (DED) and anxiety are prevalent disorders that often coexist, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying their comorbidity remain inadequately understood. This study sought to elucidate the convergent genes, pathways, and immune signatures that link DED and anxiety by employing integrated bioinformatics and experimental validation approaches. METHODS: Datasets (GSE44101, GSE98793) were retrieved from the GEO database. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), differential expression analysis, and LASSO regression were utilized to identify candidate genes a

Transforming Eye-Care Diagnostics Through Artificial Intelligence, Biometric Evaluation, and Tele-Optometry.

Visual impairment remains a major global health concern associated with disorders such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataract, and age-related macular degeneration. Early detection of ocular abnormalities remains essential for preventing irreversible visual loss. Conventional diagnostic methods rely on clinical examination and specialised imaging, yet limitations in accessibility, diagnostic variability, and delayed detection continue to affect effective eye-care delivery in many settings. Advances in digital technologies have introduced innovative diagnostic approaches integrating artifi

Double insertion of superior oblique muscle of the eye: a rare variation.

Superior oblique muscle of the eye is involved in depression, abduction and intorsion of the eyeball. Knowledge of its variations is useful for understanding and repairing strabismus cases and other visual problems. We report a rare unilateral variation of right superior oblique muscle. The superior oblique muscle had a normal origin. However, it had two insertions. Its tendon passed through the fibrous trochlea and was inserted to the sclera in a usual manner. In addition, it had an additional insertion to the roof of the orbit through an aponeurosis. We also observed the encroachment of the

Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Biosimilars for Use in the Aging Eye.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapies have revolutionized the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), a leading cause of vision loss, in addition to other retinal vascular diseases such as diabetic macular edema (DME), retinal vein occlusions (RVO). Biosimilars, which are nearly identical versions of original biologic drugs, offer a promising alternative to these costly treatments. Several biosimilars for anti-VEGF drugs including bevacizumab, ranibizumab, and aflibercept are in various stages of development and approval (e.g. Afilivu, Yesafili

Benzalkonium Chloride in Eye Drops Causing Allergic Contact Dermatitis: A Case Series.

We present three patients who developed allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from benzalkonium chloride (BAK) in ophthalmic drops. BAK is a preservative commonly found in ophthalmic formulations and there is a rising trend of ACD to this allergen. The irritant and sensitising properties of BAK on the ocular mucosa will be discussed. This paper will also explore BAK allergy from eye drops in patients with atopic dermatitis and those using dupilumab.

An eye on metformin: Applications and drug delivery strategies for ocular conditions.

Metformin, a widely recognized anti-hyperglycaemic agent, shows pleiotropic effects across various disease states. Recent research has highlighted its potential therapeutic applications in ocular conditions, including inflammation, oxidative stress, burns, conjunctivitis, and neovascularization. Although the high-water solubility of metformin is considered advantageous, it may pose challenges for conventional eye drops due to the potential for rapid solubilization in aqueous-based lacrimal fluid and removal via tear turnover. To address this limitation, innovative ocular delivery systems, such

Prevalences of Known and Presumed Inherited Eye Diseases in Pugs in Germany.

The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the prevalence and distribution of presumed inherited eye diseases in pugs in Germany and to evaluate potential risk factors for selected diseases. Therefore, ophthalmic findings from 294 pugs provided by the German panel of the European Eye Scheme programme were analyzed retrospectively. Associations between diseases and age and sex were assessed using multivariable linear probability models and correlation analyses and prevalences with 95% confidence intervals were reported. Entropion was the most frequent diagnosis (72.4%), followed by pig

[Recurrence of herpetic eye disease following cataract surgery: risk factors and prevention].

Herpetic eye disease poses a significant challenge in cataract surgery. On the one hand, patients with a history of herpes infections develop cataracts more rapidly and the surgery itself is associated with a higher rate of intraoperative complications. On the other hand, the risk of herpetic recurrence after cataract surgery is markedly increased (46% for herpes simplex virus and up to 40% for herpes zoster virus). The prognosis is significantly worse in the event of a recurrence, which is why reducing the recurrence rate is of great clinical interest. Preoperatively, attention should be paid

Eye Health and Vision Function in Adults Aging with Well-Controlled HIV.

Here, we describe vision health in aging adults living with HIV (PLWH) and comparable people without HIV (PWOH) from the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS). PLWH and PWOH aged 60 years and older were recruited from Baltimore/Washington, DC, from September 2021 to September 2023. Exact matching and sample weights were used to create age-balanced comparisons. Visual impairment (VA worse than 20/40 after refraction or CS worse than 1.50 logCS in the better eye) and the presence of eye pathology were assessed. We studied 74 PLWH (97% virally suppressed) and 65 PWOH, aged 61 to 79 years, 36% B

Unilateral corneal ectasia following trigeminal schwannoma resection with chronic neurogenic eye rubbing.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KC) is typically a bilateral, progressive corneal ectasia. Unilateral ectasia is uncommon and has been associated with chronic mechanical stress, such as eye rubbing. Although unilateral ectasia related to unilateral rubbing has been reported, the neurogenic driver of such behavior is less commonly highlighted. We describe a case of late-onset unilateral ectasia developing after trigeminal schwannoma resection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man with a history of left cerebellopontine angle schwannoma resection developed persistent left-sided facial hypoesthesia fol

A unified developmental timeline of pigmented ocular tissues in the mouse eye.

Pigmented tissues of the vertebrate eye are essential for optical performance, metabolic support, and tissue homeostasis, yet their coordinated development has been difficult to study because melanin interferes with histological and immunohistochemical analyses. Here, we apply a gentle hydrogen peroxide based bleaching method compatible with IHC for Rpe65, Rhodopsin, ZO-1, Cralbp/Rlbp1, S100b, and Cd34, and examined Dct/Tyrp2 expression, to generate a unified developmental atlas of all pigmented tissues in the mouse eye. We also re-analyzed published single-cell RNA-seq datasets from developin

A Bird's-Eye Overview of Leptin and Female Reproduction -with Mammalian Comparisons.

Leptin, a key regulator of reproductive physiology, influences various processes in vertebrates, including oocyte proliferation, embryogenesis, the onset of puberty, ovarian function, and follicle development. In mammals, leptin affects steroidogenesis, folliculogenesis, and hormonal regulation through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Instead, in avian species, leptin-controlled mechanisms are poorly understood, because birds do not produce leptin in adipocytes. In birds, leptin is expressed in the brain, pituitary glands, and gonads, where it enhances ovarian function and egg-laying p
