Postpartum uterine diseases and their impacts on conception and days open in dairy herds in Italy.

The objective of this study was to describe the incidence and the impact of postpartum uterine diseases in postpartum cows on future uterine status and reproductive performance in large Italian dairy herds. This study provides an important quantitative estimate of uterine and postpartum diseases incidence that afflict high-producing Italian dairy cows. The total number of cows included in the study was 1498 on three farms; all cows were followed from the dry period until 300 days postpartum. All farms used high-quality data collection systems and standard operating procedures: weekly herd heal

Seroepidemiology of leptospirosis in dogs from rural and slum communities of Los Rios Region, Chile.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease of global importance and often neglected as a public health problem due to lack of awareness, under-diagnosis and under-reporting. Animals serve as a source of transmission through the shedding of Leptospira in their urine. Because of their proximity to humans, dogs may play a role in human infections. In order to assess and mitigate leptospirosis in dogs and the risk of transmission to humans it is important to understand the epidemiology of leptospirosis under natural conditions. This study aimed to characterize leptospirosis in owned dogs from

Changes in the dynamics of Coxiella burnetii infection in dairy cattle: an approach to match field data with the epidemiological cycle of C. burnetii in endemic herds.

This study aimed to evaluate changes in the epidemiological status of Coxiella burnetii in dairy cattle herds to better understand the epidemiology of the infection and to predict its evolution. Bulk-tank milk (BTM) and serum samples were collected from 94 dairy cattle herds and analyzed by ELISA (BTM and sera) and PCR (BTM) in study 1 (S1). Two years later (study 2; S2), the same farms were visited with a similar sampling approach. To estimate seroconversion during this period, blood samples were collected from the maximum possible number of animals surveyed in S1. Environmental samples were

A 60-day probiotic protocol with Dietzia subsp. C79793-74 prevents development of Johne's disease parameters after in utero and/or neonatal MAP infection.

The research reported herein was designed to assess whether the bacterium, Dietzia subspecies C79793-74, used as a probiotic, could prevent development of parameters indicative of bovine paratuberculosis after potential in utero, birthing and neonatal (colostrum) exposure to Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). Such exposure avenues are especially relevant for dairy farms practicing good management procedures since calves on these farms could be infected via dams that have yet to be identified as MAP-positive. Indeed, of 18 calves in the present study that became paratubercul

Prevalence and molecular characterization of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. in dairy cattle in Ontario, Canada.

Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. are intestinal protozoan parasites that infect a wide range of host species, including humans. Molecular characterization of these parasites has demonstrated that a number of genotypes and species are common to both humans and animals, and that zoonotic transmission may occur. Numerous studies have reported a high prevalence of G. duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. in cattle, particularly calves, and these animals are frequently associated with zoonotic transmission. In the present study, a total of 143 faecal samples from adults, heifers and calves

Application of DNA vaccine technology to aquaculture.

The aquaculture industry needs to augment its global production and efficiency to meet the increasing consumer needs for fish and shellfish products. Unfortunately, infectious diseases have been a major impediment to the development and profitability of fish farms. While vaccines offer the most efficient way to control infectious pathogens, current products have only been successful against some diseases. These are mostly bacterial, and there are still several important diseases, mainly of viral and parasitic origin, for which no prophylactic treatment exists. DNA vaccines, compared to traditi

Characterization of failed milking events in a voluntary milking system.

Robotic milking systems are increasingly used on dairy farms, offering automation and enhanced efficiency in the milking process. However, failed milking events are a serious concern for overall farm milking efficiency. The objective was to evaluate failed milking events (FME) in a voluntary milking system with free-flow cow traffic, to understand impacts and outcomes based on teat positions, lactation stages, parity, and environmental variations. Cow and milking records data from the milking robots were collected from a dairy farm in Texas between February 2020 and June 2024, encompassing a t

Antibiotic susceptibility of mastitis pathogens in Finnish dairy cows in 2022-2023: concerning changes in the penicillin susceptibility of Streptococcus uberis.

BACKGROUND: Intramammary infections are the most common reason for antibiotic use in dairy cattle. A multiplex PCR has become the mainstay in determining the causative mastitis pathogens in Finland. However, this method does not allow the monitoring of antibiotic resistance among mastitis pathogens. The aim of this study was to assess antibiotic susceptibility among common bacterial pathogens isolated from mastitis milk specimens in Finland. Specimens were collected on dairy farms from cows suffering from mastitis and analysed with the PathoProof™ Mastitis Complete-16 PCR assay. Specimens with

Identification of chronic wasting disease prions in decaying tongue tissues from exhumed white-tailed deer.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) prions cause fatal neuropathies in farmed and free-ranging cervids. The deposition of prions in natural and humanmade environmental components has been implicated as a major mechanism mediating CWD spread in wild and captive populations. Prions can be deposited in the environment through excreta, tissues, and carcasses from pre-clinical and clinical animals. Furthermore, burial of CWD-positive animals may reduce but not completely mitigate prion spread from carcasses into the surrounding environment. Here, we analyzed exhumed, decaying deer carcasses for the prese

Prediction of the daily nutrient requirements of gestating sows based on sensor data and machine-learning algorithms.

Precision feeding is a strategy for supplying an amount and composition of feed as close that are as possible to each animal's nutrient requirements, with the aim of reducing feed costs and environmental losses. Usually, the nutrient requirements of gestating sows are provided by a nutrition model that requires input data such as sow and herd characteristics, but also an estimation of future farrowing performances. New sensors and automatons, such as automatic feeders and drinkers, have been developed on pig farms over the last decade, and have produced large amounts of data. This study evalua

[Influence of an eCG administration on puerperal involution and fertility in Simmentaler cows].

SUBJECT AND AIM: In the literature, various methods aiming for a promotion of uterine involution and ovarian function in post-partum dairy cattle have been described. Recently, successful use of equine choriongonadotropin (eCG) in this context has been repeatedly reported, while other studies have failed to demonstrate positive effects of eCG administration on puerperal involution in cows. Due to the contradictory results described in the literature, the aim of this field study was to verify whether the administration of eCG on day 10 post-partum exerts a positive effect on uterine involution,
