Population based studies have demonstrated that having a first degree relative with a hip fracture is predictive of future hip fractures. Postmenopausal bone mineral density (BMD), ultrasound of calcaneus and hip axis length are associated with hip fracture, with the association for ultrasound and hip axis length being independent of BMD. The aim of this study was to determine the genetic component of these three important risk factors. We performed a classical twin study using 500 normal female twins, 128 identical and 122 non-identical pairs, aged 50 to 70 years. We measured bone mineral den

BACKGROUND: The effects of vitamin D on fractures, falls, and bone mineral density are uncertain, particularly for high vitamin D doses. We aimed to determine the effect of vitamin D supplementation on fractures, falls, and bone density.
METHODS: In this systematic review, random-effects meta-analysis, and trial sequential analysis, we used findings from literature searches in previously published meta-analyses. We updated these findings by searching PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central on Sept 14, 2017, and Feb 26, 2018, using the search term "vitamin D" and additional keywords, without any

Denosumab is a potent anti-resorptive medication used to treat patients at high risk for osteoporosis; however, its beneficial effects on the skeletal system are quickly reversed after discontinuation. In contrast, bisphosphonates (BPs) are anti-resorptive agents with residual effects on the bone matrix; thus, these are capable of preserving bone mass for a long time. Therefore, subsequent anti-resorptive treatment with BPs is mandatory to prevent rebound fractures. Furthermore, BP administration before denosumab treatment appears to be a reasonable strategy for reducing hyperactivation of bon

The primary aim of osteoporosis treatment is prevention of osteoporotic fractures. The main factors in the development of these fractures are mechanic resistance of the bone and the bone quality. The importance of risk factor identification increases and it is important to consider the structural analysis of the hip-bone when evaluating and deciding whether to prescribe antiresorptive or osteoanabolic drugs or whether to just modify calcium and vitamin D intake. Various options are currently available for the pharmacological treatment of osteoporosis: calcium and vitamin D supplementation toge

OBJECTIVES: Multiple studies have reported an association between proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use and fracture. However, the causality of this association is questionable, as there is not a well defined mechanism of action, nor is there evidence of an effect on PPIs on areal bone mineral density (aBMD) using dual photon X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). It is possible that PPIs may induce changes in bone structure which would predispose to fracture in the absence of changes in aBMD. We used three-dimensional quantitative computed tomography (3D-QCT) imaging to determine if long-term PPI use was asso

While the axolotl's ability to completely regenerate amputated limbs is well known and studied, the mechanism of axolotl bone fracture healing remains poorly understood. One reason might be the lack of a standardized fracture fixation in axolotl. We present a surgical technique to stabilize the osteotomized axolotl femur with a fixator plate and compare it to a non-stabilized osteotomy and to limb amputation. The healing outcome was evaluated 3 weeks, 3, 6 and 9 months post-surgery by microcomputer tomography, histology and immunohistochemistry. Plate-fixated femurs regained bone integrity mor

The progressive ankylosis protein (ANK) is a transmembrane protein that transports intracellular pyrophosphate (PPi) to the extracellular milieu. In this study we show increased fatty degeneration of the bone marrow of adult ank/ank mice, which lack a functional ANK protein. In addition, isolated bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) isolated from ank/ank mice showed a decreased proliferation rate and osteogenic differentiation potential, and an increased adipogenic differentiation potential compared to BMSCs isolated from wild type (WT) littermates. Wnt signaling pathway PCR array analysis reveal

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Accelerated bone loss occurs early after liver transplantation (OLT) and, in cholestatic patients with pre-existing osteopenia, causes spontaneous fracturing. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of calcitonin, a powerful inhibitor of bone resorption, in preventing or reducing the accelerated rate of bone loss and fracturing which occurs in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis early after OLT.
METHODS: Sixty-three patients undergoing OLT for primary biliary cirrhosis (n = 26) and primary sclerosing cholarigitis (n = 37) were rando

Highly comminuted fractures and bone defects pose a significant challenge for orthopedic surgery. Current surgical procedures commonly rely on metal implants (such as bone plates, nails and pins) for fracture internal and external fixations, but they are likely to result in problems, such as stress shielding and poor bone healing. Bone adhesive represents an attractive alternative for the treatment of fracture. The ideal bone adhesive should satisfy several performance requirements, including high adhesion strength for bone tissues, rapid in-situ curing in a physiological environment, good bio

Bone defects represent a prevalent category of clinical injuries, causing significant pain and escalating health care burdens. Effectively addressing bone defects is thus of paramount importance. Platelets, formed from megakaryocyte lysis, have emerged as pivotal players in bone tissue repair, inflammatory responses, and angiogenesis. Their intracellular storage of various growth factors, cytokines, and membrane protein receptors contributes to these crucial functions. This article provides a comprehensive overview of platelets' roles in hematoma structure, inflammatory responses, and angiogen

The aim of this study is to evaluate the osteogenesis around titanium implant and in bone defect or fracture in jaw bones and long bones in ovariectomized (OVX) animal models. The literature on the osteogenesis around titanium implant and in bone defect or fracture in jaw bones and long bones was reviewed with charts. Fourty-eight rats were randomly divided into OVX group with ovariectomy and SHAM (sham-surgery) group with sham surgery. Titanium implants were inserted in the right mandibles and tibiae; bone defects were created in the left mandibles and tibiae. Two-week postoperatively, mandib

Osteoporosis is a disorder of skeletal fragility characterized by an imbalance in bone turnover such that bone resorption exceeds bone formation. Accelerated bone resorption is the principal physiological derangement responsible for both postmenopausal and age-related bone loss. Furthermore, increased bone turnover is itself a risk factor for fracture, independent of bone mineral density. Thus, there is a strong rationale for the use of potent antiresorptive drugs for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates are a class of drugs that inhibit osteoclast activity and bone re

New surgical techniques for the treatment of scaphoid non-union, developed in the last two decades, now enable a healing rate of 80-90%. However, no consensus exists for the surgical treatment of non-union. On the other hand, regenerative medicine techniques have enriched the therapeutic armamentarium for non-union, especially in the lower limbs, with the use of autologous concentrated bone marrow injection using autologous osteogenic precursors to create a favorable microenvironment for bone healing. This technique has the advantages of being inexpensive, easily accessible and applicable in s

Lisfranc injuries were thought to primarily occur during high-energy events, leading to a preference for fusion treatment; however, recent data have shifted this perspective by highlighting a greater occurrence of low-energy injuries and reshaping the focus on open reduction internal fixation. This multifaceted process is guided by various factors, including the nature of the injury, specific anatomic considerations, and the involved joints. Our overarching goal remains to achieve anatomic reduction, with flexibility in hardware fixation methods. In cases of comminution, bridge plating may be

Olecranon fractures are most frequently stabilized by tension band wiring (TBW), which unfortunately leads to relevant implant removal rates due to K-wire migration and soft tissue irritation. As lag screw osteosynthesis (LSO) might be a gentle and effective alternative in simple fracture patterns, the goal of the present study was to biomechanically compare LSO with TBW in simple olecranon fractures at a cadaver model. A simple olecranon fracture (Mayo type IIA) was created in eight pairs of human cadaver elbows, which were pairwise fixed by either TBW or two transcortical 4.0 mm lag screws.

Between 2018 and 2020, 14 patients with closed metacarpal fractures requiring open reduction were operated on via a palmar approach. Reduction and fixation were done with screws or plates. We assessed range of motion, grip strength, Mayo score, possible nerve damage and cosmesis. The range of motion and grip strength were fully restored by 6 months after operation. Transient paraesthesiae in the digital nerve territory occurred in two patients and had resolved by 3 months. In selected patients the palmar approach for metacarpal shaft fractures can provide satisfactory cosmesis and function of

This study aims to analyze the biomechanical stability of Magic screw in the treatment of acetabular posterior column fractures by finite element analysis. A three-dimensional finite element model of the pelvis was established based on the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of a volunteer and its effectiveness was verified. Then, the posterior column fracture model of the acetabulum was generated. The biomechanical stability of the four internal fixation models was compared. The 500 N force was applied to the upper surface of the sacrum to simulate human gravity
