Determination of antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence-related genes of Trueperella pyogenes strains isolated from various clinical specimens in animals.

In this study, a total of 32 Trueperella pyogenes strains isolated from different disease specimens in cattle, sheep and goats were examined. Antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates to 10 antimicrobials were determined using the E-test method and MIC values of the antimicrobials were investigated. The genes that play a role in the antimicrobial resistance or virulence of T. pyogenes were determined by PCR using gene specific primers. In the study, all the isolates were susceptible to penicillin and cephalosporin. The highest resistance rate in the isolates was determined against streptomy

Molecular detection of Coxiella burnetii in ticks collected from animals and the environment in Uganda.

AIMS: Coxiella burnetii is a highly infectious organism that is easily spread through aerosols causing Q fever in humans. Ticks can harbour and transmit C. burnetii to animals, contributing to disease maintenance. Our aim was to examine the presence of C. burnetii in ticks in Uganda. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, ticks were collected from five Ugandan districts and tested by real-time PCR for C. burnetii (Coxiella outer membrane protein 1 gene). A total of 859 tick pools (9602 individual ticks) were tested, and pool positivity for C. burnetii was 5.5% (n = 47). Pooled prevalence differe

Massive cardiac vegetation and cardiomyopathy in a 23-year-old rancher with brucellosis.

KEY CLINICAL MASSAGE: A 23-year-old rancher was admitted with the diagnosis of brucellosis. In evaluations, a massive vegetation in the aortic valve was seen. A combination of antibiotic therapy and cardiac surgery were performed, it seems this approach reduces mortality and complications. ABSTRACT: Brucellosis (also known as "undulant fever," "Mediterranean fever," or "Malta fever") is a zoonotic infection transmitted to humans from infected animals (cattle, sheep, goats, camels, pigs, or other animals) by ingestion of food products (such as unpasteurized dairy products) or by contact with t

A 4-month-old male baby with an orf lesion on his nose: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Ecthyma contagiosum, sometimes referred to as human orf, is a zoonotic disease caused by the orf virus that is mostly acquired by coming into contact with diseased animals such as sheep or goats. The orf virus, a DNA virus belonging to the Poxviridae family, infects epidermal keratinocytes via breaking down the skin barrier, which can be caused by burns or wounds. The accompanying characteristic skin lesions can take on a range of morphologies depending on the infection's stage; lesions that are crusted, papillomatous, maculopapular, targetoid, and nodular can occur before clearing

An Overview of DNA Vaccines Development Studies Against Toxoplasma gondii.

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an obligate intracellular parasite that can infect almost all warm-blooded animals, including humans, and one-third of the global population is thought to be infected with this parasite. Infection can occur through consumption of contaminated food, contact with an infected host, or congenital transmission. While toxoplasmosis is asemptomatic in people with a healthy immune system, it can cause severe infections in people with a suppressed immune system or with immunodeficiency. In addition to causing diseases in humans, it also causes infections in livestock an

NGF regulates sertoli cell growth and prevents LPS-induced junction protein damage via PI3K/AKT/NFκB signaling.

Damage to Sertoli cell junction proteins caused by inflammation can lead to male infertility. Nerve growth factor (NGF) plays an important role in reproductive and inflammatory disease; however, whether and how NGF regulates Sertoli cell function remains unclear. Here, we aimed to assess the effect of NGF on the growth of Sertoli cells isolated from the testes of dairy goats and evaluate if NGF has a protective effect on these cells. We confirmed that Sertoli cell viability, proliferation, and ATP content increased following NGF treatment. In addition, qPCR results suggested that Sertoli cell

Inactivation Kinetics of Coxiella burnetii During High-Temperature Short-Time Pasteurization of Milk.

The Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii is the causative organism of the zoonosis Q fever and is known for its resistance toward various intra- and extracellular stressors. Infected ruminants such as cattle, sheep, and goats can shed the pathogen in their milk. Pasteurization of raw milk was introduced for the inactivation of C. burnetii and other milk-borne pathogens. Legal regulations for the pasteurization of milk are mostly based on recommendations of the Codex Alimentarius. As described there, C. burnetii is considered as the most heat-resistant non-spore-for

Timing of orthodontic tooth movement in bone defects repaired with synthetic scaffolds: A scoping review of animal studies.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal timing of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) could allow earlier tooth movements across alveolar bone defects while minimizing the adverse effects. The objective of this scoping systematic review was therefore designed to review pre-clinical animal studies on the ideal protocol for the timing of orthodontic traction across alveolar defects augmented with synthetic scaffolds. DESIGN: Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, three electronic databases were searched (Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science). RESULTS: A total of twelve studies were included in the final review that re

A case of Norwegian scabies in a patient with leukemia cutis secondary to chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: ZFHX3, a multifunctional transcription factor, plays pivotal roles in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, including neuronal differentiation, development, atrial fibrillation, and cancer. Notably, homozygous deletion of Zfhx3 is embryonic lethal, whereas its hemizygous deletion results in reduced neonatal body weight and increased preweaning mortality in mice. Also, a deletion mutation in Zfhx3 is significantly associated with reduced litter size, a key reproduction-related trait in goats, suggesting that ZFHX3 is involved in reproductive development. However, it

Source genotype influence on cross species transmission of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies evaluated by RT-QuIC.

Scrapie is a naturally occurring transmissible spongiform encephalopathy of sheep and goats. This fatal neurodegenerative disease is caused by misfolding of the cellular prion protein to pathogenic β-rich conformers (PrPSc) that accumulate in higher order structures of the brain and other tissues. This conversion has been used for in vitro assays including serial protein misfolding amplification and real-time quaking induced conversion (RT-QuIC). RT-QuIC can be used for the detection of prions and for strain discrimination in a variety of biological tissues from humans and animals. In this stu

A ROS-dependent and Caspase-3-mediated apoptosis in sheep bronchial epithelial cells in response to Mycoplasma Ovipneumoniae infections.

Mycoplasma Ovipneumoniae (M. ovipneumoniae) is a primary etiological agent of enzootic pneumonia in sheep and goats. It can enter and colonize ovine respiratory epithelial cells to establish an infection, which leads a serious cell death of epithelial cells. However, the nature of the interaction between pathogen of M. ovipneumoniae and host cells in the cell injury is currently not well understood. In this study, we investigated the epithelial cell apoptosis caused by an infection of M. ovipneumoniae in sheep primary air-liquid interface (ALI) epithelial cultures. The results showed that M. o

Inter-epidemic Rift Valley fever virus seroconversions in an irrigation scheme in Bura, south-east Kenya.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an acute mosquito-borne viral zoonosis whose outbreaks are often associated with prolonged rainfall and flooding, during which large numbers of vectors emerge. Recent studies into the inter-epidemic maintenance of RVF virus (RVFV) suggest that both vertical transmission in vectors and direct transmission between hosts act in combination with predisposing factors for persistence of the virus. A comparative longitudinal survey was carried out in Tana River County, Kenya, in irrigated, riverine and pastoral ecosystems from September 2014-June 2015. The objectives were t
