Speech-language habilitation of hearing-impaired children: basis for assessment and training.

Spoken language assessment and training for profoundly deaf children should be based on normal developmental sequences. However, existing models of normal speech/language development have not been able to account for shifts from one developmental level to another. The implications of more recent theories of the development of expressive communication are reviewed. The concept of levels of spoken language development is reevaluated in terms of these theories. It is proposed that the developmental landmarks that initiate each level are a product of changes with growth in underlying subsystems. S

Ontogenetic development of the holocephalan dentition: Morphological transitions of dentine in the absence of teeth.

Among the cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes), the Holocephali are unique in that teeth are absent both in ontogeny and adult regenerative growth. Instead, the holocephalan dentition of ever-growing nonshedding dental plates is composed of dentine, trabecular in arrangement, forming spaces into which a novel hypermineralized dentine (whitlockin) is deposited. These tissue features form a variety of specific morphologies as the defining characters of dental plates in the three families of extant holocephalans. We demonstrate how this morphology changes through ontogenetic development with con

In utero undernutrition impairs rat beta-cell development.

The role of nutrition on the development of the endocrine pancreas was studied in a rat model obtained by maternal food restriction. A 50% food restriction was applied to female rats from day 15 of pregnancy and resulted in intrauterine growth-retardation (IUGR) in the offspring. At day 1 postnatal, beta-cell mass was significantly decreased in IUGR pups as compared to controls (0.70 +/- 0.06 vs 1.07 +/- 0.06 mg, p < 0.0001), as well as insulin content. This change in beta-cell mass can be attributed to a reduced number of islets, since the density of insulin-positive aggregates in pancreatic

Zinc in Cognitive Impairment and Aging.

Zinc, an essential micronutrient for life, was first discovered in 1869 and later found to be indispensable for the normal development of plants and for the normal growth of rats and birds. Zinc plays an important role in many physiological and pathological processes in normal mammalian brain development, especially in the development of the central nervous system. Zinc deficiency can lead to neurodegenerative diseases, mental abnormalities, sleep disorders, tumors, vascular diseases, and other pathological conditions, which can cause cognitive impairment and premature aging. This study aimed

The digestive tract histology and geographical distribution of gastrointestinal microbiota in yellow-feather broilers.

Exhaustive understanding of intestinal physiological characteristics is the critical precondition for the improvement of intestinal health and growth performance of yellow-feather broilers (YFB). As a vital part of gastrointestinal tract, the symbiotic, complex, and variable microbiota have a profound effect on the nutrition, immunity, health, and production of broilers. Hence, the development status of proventriculus, jejunum, and cecum, and spatial heterogeneity of bacterial community in crop, proventriculus, gizzard, jejunum, cecum, and rectum of adult YFB were detected in our study. S100B actions on glial and neuronal cells in the developing brain: an overview.

The S100B is a member of the S100 family of "E" helix-loop- "F" helix structure (EF) hand calcium-binding proteins expressed in diverse glial, selected neuronal, and various peripheral cells, exerting differential effects. In particular, this review compiles descriptions of the detection of S100B in different brain cells localized in specific regions during the development of humans, mice, and rats. Then, it summarizes S100B's actions on the differentiation, growth, and maturation of glial and neuronal cells in humans and rodents. Particular emphasis is placed on S100B regulation of the differ

Placental dysfunction and neonatal mortality induced by Salmonella Abortusequi in a murine model of pregestational infection.

INTRODUCTION: Salmonella Abortusequi is a host-restricted equine pathogen and a major cause of abortion in mares, threatening reproductive health and industry sustainability. This study was aimed to identify factors that adversely affect placental function, contributing to the development of fetal growth restriction (FGR) and neonatal mortality. METHODS: CF1 virgin female mice received a pregestational intragastric dose of Salmonella Abortusequi (108 CFU/mouse). On gestational day 18 (GD18), pregnant females were sacrificed, and maternal tissues and fetoplacental units were collected. In a se

Androgens During Infancy, Childhood, and Adolescence: Physiology and Use in Clinical Practice.

We provide an in-depth review of the role of androgens in male maturation and development, from the fetal stage through adolescence into emerging adulthood, and discuss the treatment of disorders of androgen production throughout these time periods. Testosterone, the primary androgen produced by males, has both anabolic and androgenic effects. Androgen exposure induces virilization and anabolic body composition changes during fetal development, influences growth and virilization during infancy, and stimulates development of secondary sexual characteristics, growth acceleration, bone mass accru

Hypoxia: From Placental Development to Fetal Programming.

Hypoxia may influence normal and different pathological processes. Low oxygenation activates a variety of responses, many of them regulated by hypoxia-inducible factor 1 complex, which is mostly involved in cellular control of O2 consumption and delivery, inhibition of growth and development, and promotion of anaerobic metabolism. Hypoxia plays a significant physiological role in fetal development; it is involved in different embryonic processes, for example, placentation, angiogenesis, and hematopoiesis. More recently, fetal hypoxia has been associated directly or indirectly with fetal progra

Interactions of cytokines, growth factors, and the extracellular matrix in the cellular biology of uterine leiomyomata.

OBJECTIVE: To review the available information regarding the role of cytokines, growth factors, and the extracellular matrix in the pathophysiology of uterine leiomyomata and to integrate this information in a suggested model of disease at the cellular level. DESIGN: A thorough literature and MEDLINE search was conducted to identify the relevant studies in the English literature published between January, 1966 and October, 2001. A model of disease at the cellular level was developed using the most likely cytokines to be involved in the pathogenesis of leiomyomata as determined by our assessme

Stoichiometric model of Escherichia coli metabolism: incorporation of growth-rate dependent biomass composition and mechanistic energy requirements.

A stoichiometric model of metabolism was developed to describe the balance of metabolic reactions during steady-state growth of Escherichia coli on glucose (or metabolic intermediates) and mineral salts. The model incorporates 153 reversible and 147 irreversible reactions and 289 metabolites from several metabolic data bases for the biosynthesis of the macromolecular precursors, coenzymes, and prosthetic groups necessary for synthesis of all cellular macromolecules. Correlations describing how the cellular composition changes with growth rate were developed from experimental data and were used

[Growth disorders. Recommendations for a practice-oriented classification].

Besides acute illnesses, including allergies, growth disturbances are among the most frequent reasons for parents to consult a physician about their children. The basis of diagnosis is a detailed family and personal history. Actual measurement of the parents is necessary for calculation of the patient's target height. The growth data obtained must be charted on percentile curves. Only in the second line of the diagnostic approach should the physician resort to hormone determinations and X-rays of the left hand and wrist for bone age determination. For practical purposes, growth aberrations may

A methionine-Mettl3-N6-methyladenosine axis promotes polycystic kidney disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common monogenic disorder marked by numerous progressively enlarging kidney cysts. Mettl3, a methyltransferase that catalyzes the abundant N6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA modification, is implicated in development, but its role in most diseases is unknown. Here, we show that Mettl3 and m6A levels are increased in mouse and human ADPKD samples and that kidney-specific transgenic Mettl3 expression produces tubular cysts. Conversely, Mettl3 deletion in three orthologous ADPKD mouse models slows cyst growth. Interestingly, methionine and S-ade

Influence of different photoperiods on development of gonad, cloacal gland and circulating thyroid hormones in male Japanese quail Coturnix coturnix japonica.

One day old chicks of Japanese quail were exposed to different photoperiods (LD, 8:16, 13.5:10.5, 16:8 and LL) and observations (testes weight, cloacal gland size, body weight and circulating thyroxine and triiodothyronine) were taken at the age of 3, 5, 7, 9 and 16 weeks. Results indicate that immediate reproductive development occurred in birds exposed to long photoperiods (greater than 12 hr). Growth under LD 8:16, was not apparent till 7th week and by 16 weeks, degree of gonadal development was similar in all the birds, irrespective of photoperiodic treatment. Whereas body weight of the in

Available evidence and new biological perspectives on medical treatment of advanced thymic epithelial tumors.

Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are rare primary mediastinal tumors arising from thymic epithelium. Their rarity and complexity hinder investigations of their causes and therapy development. Here, we summarize the existing knowledge regarding medical treatment of these tumors, and thoroughly review the known genetic aberrations associated with TETs and the present status of potential biological treatments. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), stem-cell factor receptor, insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1R), and vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF-A, VEGF-B, and VEGF-2) are ov

Insights into Overlappings of Fibrosis and Cancer: Exploring the Tumor-related Cardinal Genes in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

The pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is quite similar to that of cancer pathogenesis, and several pathways appear to be involved in both disorders. The mammalian target of the rapamycin (mTOR) pathway harbors several established oncogenes and tumor suppressors. The same signaling molecules and growth factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), contributing to cancer development and progression play a part in fibroblast proliferation, myofibroblast differentiation, and the production of extracellular matrix in IPF development as well. The expression of candida

Longitudinal angiographic characterization of the efficacy of combined cerebral revascularization using minimally invasive encephalodurosynangiosis in patients with moyamoya angiopathy.

Moyamoya angiopathy (MMA) can be treated using direct, indirect, or combined revascularization procedures. We perform combined revascularization using the STA-MCA bypass and minimally invasive encephalodurosynangiosis (MIS-EDS). Due to lack of systematic analyses to date it remains unclear whether and to which extent this limited EDS serves as a growth source for extracerebral blood vessels into the brain. The objective of the current study is to characterize the extent of angiographic filling of MIS-EDS and STA-MCA bypass development over time and to determine possible predictors of EDS devel
